It continues to be an especially bad flu season and now were learning the effectiveness of this years flu vaccine could be the worst weve seen in a decade. But some hospitals in our area have found a way to help protect their workers despite being surrounded by the virus every day. Health reporter and registered nurse ali gorman joins us at the big board with thto tonight. Ali. Yeah, rick, the theory is the more flu vaccine you have over the years, meaning getting a flu shot every season, the more likely you are to be protected. One local emergency room chief says thats one reason his staff has stayed healthy. I think this is going to probably go down on record as one of the worst flu years weve seen. Dr. Alfred cichetti is chief of emergey services. He say theres always been about 10 to 15 flu patients in i would say on a given day the staff is that probably been coughed in the phase sneezed on or had some snugglely kid with a runny nose kiss them at least a dozen times. Reporter but despite this the majority of doctors nurses and techs here have remained flu free. He says its partly due to good hand washing and other prevention practices. But it can also be attributed to yearly flu shots. Since 2014, the hospital has required staff to get vaccinated. The doctor says that helps your body build up a library of exposure to different types of the virus. So when a really novel one comes in, your immune system can go back i remember three years ago i saw something similar to that and command an anti body response. Reporter some experts say yearly flu shots can be helpful when the vaccine hasnt been great match. The cdc released new numbers showing this years vaccine has so far been 36 percent effective overall for adults and 59 percent effective overall for kids. Nationwide the number of children who have died related to complications is at 84. And just for perspective, sadly last year we saw 101 cdilde due complications from the flu. Now, as for this season, the virus is still at high activity in most states and it expected to wind down for several more weeks. For the future, yearly flu shots can help offer better overall protection and not just for healthcare workers. Monica. Thank you, ali. Well, West Philadelphia has a new building project under way tonight. Governor tom wolf and other leaders broke ground today on the New Market West building. It will offer Daycare Center educational and emergency services, retail heals. The construction itself is creating 120 permanent jobs, 94 other jobs will be available down the road. Now we just to get home and if youre trying to do so on the mlk, west river drive this evening, youre having a tough time heading outbound. This is where we normally see taillights moving on the outbound mlk but not this afternoon. Its all because of an overturned truck and chopper6 was overhead just a bit ago. It appears that this truck hit the overpass here and flipped over. You can see some of the contents of the truck spilled out. So, the ramp from eakins oval right by the art museum to go outbound on the mlk drive is blocked because of the overturned truck. Coming back out here, okay, so you can stick with the schuylkill westbound. Problem is traffic is really heavy. Were in the red there with a 41 Minute Travel time. You can stay over on the other side of the river on the kelly drive or think about some of those secondary routes like ridge avenue or lancaster avenue but the mlk outbound is closed out to sweetbriar because of that overturned truck. This is the vine street expressway eastbound our disabled vehicle pushed off to the side so all the eastbound lanes are opened. Still heavy here really in both directions right now. This is from the pagoda overlooking reading and i want to show this because they are getting some breaks in the clouds in berks county right now. The cold front is pressing through there. Its drying out but storm tracker6 live double scan showing that we still have a few lingering showers right along the coast really light but surf city, Atlantic City, cape may, its just moving out of millville right now, moving out of middletown delaware and this is headed to that cold front that will bring us a supply of cold air right in time for a winter storm. So, currently temperatures not that bad, 52 degrees in philadelphia. It hit 60 degrees today. Its 52 at the Atlantic City airport in pomona. Allentown 48. Notice it has started to cool off in the poconos. 39 degrees. And this cooler air is arring on some gusty winds. Weve got winds right now sustained anywhere from six to 22 Miles Per Hour out of the westnorthwest and thats what will bring us a gradual drop in temperatures overnight. So, satellite and radar showing this cold front continues to press to the south. It will fall a wave of low pressure develops along that. Thats what will bring us the wintry mix tomorrow but temperatures tonight really just falling gradually until about midnight. Future tracker showing around 11 oclock were still hovering slightly above freezing in allentown and reading, philadelphia 39, but temperatures crash after midnight. Tomorrow morning you wake up, its cold out there. Temperatures in the 20s. We do get sunshine in the morning. Doesnt last long. By lunchtime, the clouds are in place and then as we head towards dinnertime, this is when that snow will be breaking out. At 5 oclock, the snow reaching philadelphia, areas generally south and west. Some of that rain developing along the coast. The big question now about 24 hours ahead of the system is where does this rainsnow line set up. Looks like it will be getting close to philadelphia but north and west that of line we have some heavy snow. South and east heavy rain. A quick burst of it, its out of here by 2 oclock in the morning, so what you get, how much depends on your location. Right along the coast this is just really mainly a rain event. Interior south jersey, central delaware a coating to an inch. Along. I95 corridor were looking a one to three slushy inches. North and west, lansdale west chester areas north and west this is kind of the jackpot zone for here. Three to 5inches of that heavy wet snow. If youre heading out on saturday night, the northwest suburbs do be careful, snow covered. The i95 metro area, the secondary roads will be slushy, the main roads wet. Really the same in interior new jersey. Coastal new jersey, though, again were not looking at snow, mainly a rain event. The five day at 5 00 tomorrow limited sunshine in the morning clouds in place, by lunchtime that snow and rain arriving in the evening, the high only 39 degrees. By sunday, you wake up the sunshine is back. A lot of melting going on. The high up to 48 degrees. President s day mild, 52 degrees, some rain late in the day and monday night with a warm front. Behind that font were looking at record warmth on tuesday tying a record high of 70. Wednesday likely a new record of 73. But then a cold front brings us a round of rain and we do cool off behind that. Adam will talk about that in the sevenday forecast, guys. Okay. Thank you. Thanks cecily. Now that cold air is rushing in behind this rain but this boundary extends all the way down across thetry into the desert sou this is our system, at least a this is where the m coming from but theres energy to the north. Two are going to link so this is really going to blossom as it heads into the north and east into the day tomorrow. In fact, it races in. This is a very fast moving storm but youre going to get a lot of precipitation in a very short window of time. It starts between 4 00 and 6 00. This is 5 30 tomorrow evening. It is snowing all of pennsylvania, wilmington, jersey, northern delaware it snow at that point, rain very far southern areas and then as we progress into the storm, warm air will start to invade from the south. So, it is mainly snow for most of us in pennsylvania here throughout the entire event. If youre right along i95, wilmington, philadelphia, trenton, 10 miles to the north maybe at least 20, 25 miles or 30 miles to the south and east, it is snow at the onset. Then it mixes and changes with the rain rain fro finish, thoug, south of doverthern atlantic coy so, as we go into our saturday evenin i know its pob a big weekend, president day weekend, maybe plans for valentines day dinners, you got to watch the roads especially where it stays all snow in those northwestern suburbs. 4 oclock still low impact but quickly it is going to deteriorate between 6, 7 oclock, right through the 10, 11 oclock hour with high impact, low visibility and then it improves just after midnight again. Hi again matt. Hello rick and monica. The drive on the drives something less than pleasant this evening. This is the lincoln drive. Northbound side. You can see traffic coming away from ridge avenue and coming away from kelly drive is all locked up on the northbound side. Its because of an overturned vehicle crash just up ahead by gypsy lane there by the old 92nd precinct where we have all those big potholes. Contributed or not. Northbound side at lincoln drive stopped at the moment and southbound only a few cars getting through cong down here toward ridge avenue. So, bottom line is avoid lincoln drive. Fasten them. Winter storm watch in effect saturday evening into saturday night in those northwestern suburbs of pennsylvania. Those cold counties like chester county, montgomery county, bucks county, all the way up to the Lehigh Valley and the poconos, this is where we expect it to be all snow an to fall and the most accumulation in these counties, again tomorrow evening into tomorrow night. And this is one of those very heavy wet snows that is really hard to remove especially if you pack up a few inches of it. As we look at storm tracker6 live double scan, the rain that we saw much of the day on and off today is now off the coast. We are clearing the sky to the north and west and colder winds are moving in. In fact, we startedat 60 in philadelphia this morning. Now down to 52. 40s north and west. 30s in the poconos and these numbers will continue to tumble as we go into the overnight hours setting in that cold air just in time for the next storm. Now, the boundary that is separating that w south and the cold to the north extends all the way down to the south so this is the track of the storm. Its going to come out of the Desert Southwest and going to grab some energy from the north. Thats whats going to blossom a storm right over us but thankfully its a quick hitter. Clearing tonight sharply cold 23 in the suburbs, 28 in philadelphia. 9 oclock kind of chill the surface a little bit. In the afternoon clouds take over 1 oclock and its still dry but notice temperatures still just above the Freezing Point and then snow breaks out for the majority of the region between 4, 5 oclock tomorrow, late afternoon. Temperatures at this point will it will be still melting as it hits the ground but as we lose the sun and the snow intensifies we could see rains half an inch even an inch an hour around the 8 oclock hour. Philadelphia north and west this is when it could start accumulating on the roads, sidewalks. This is your rainsnow line. All rain down to the south and it could rain for a time all all the way far north as philadelphia.
