So, zooming in on philadelphia right now, you can see this is generally freezing rain, little bit of sleet mixed in. Manayunk where weve got the hills could be a big problem. I95 its falling. Fortunately most of the major roads have been treated. The secondary roads definitely concerned. Its a little bit heavier in northeast philadelphia. Also through jenkintown and frankford. As we zoom in, its beginning to migrate east of the new jersey turnpike. Very slowly. Its very light but do notice out in the northwestern suburbs where they generally got the snow, that is shutting off right now and as far as the snow, the snow will really be ending. Its generally just the freezing rain and the rain. Sole,. So wilmington light freezing rain, salem new jersey also bridgeton. Its continuing to push to the east. So weve got Winter Weather advisories in effect until 9 oclock for essentially philadelphia, the northwest suburbs again allentown reading and lancaster its over for you but it will take longer to exit the coast so that Winter Weather advisory continues until midnight right along the coast when it will finally be ending and, you know, a lot of this is all dependent on air temperatures. For more details on that lets head over to meteorologist Melissa Magee. Yes, cecily, and the temperatures are certainly key depending on your location. Right now to the north and west in allentown and reading, numbers are well below freezing. So, its 26 degrees in allentown, 26 in reading, 23 up in the poconos. Philadelphia just below the freezing mark by 1 degree at 31 and 35 degrees in dover. So, well talk about what we can expect and what were dealing with and why we are watching for ice this evening. For the past two weeks, temperatures have been well below freezing, which means weve got a lot of frozen ground overhead. Now, even if the air temperature is above 32 degrees, which will be the case later on today in south jersey and delaware, that can get to some icing still because the ground is so cold and it has been so frozen for so long. So, well talk about what we can expect as were tracking the light wintry mix. Its ending from northwest to southeast across the region. It clears the coast, south jersey and delaware by about midnight. Any untreated surfaces will be slick. The driveways, the sidewalks and some of those secondary streets as well. There is some good news that is headed our way. We are tracking a pattern change as early as thursday. Future tracker showing you across eastern sections of the United States temperatures are nice and mild. 45 degrees later thursday afternoon in philadelphia. 59 in cincinnati and we will be flirting with 60 later on this week. Well let you know when that will occur once we get rid of this wintry precipitation. Guys back over to you. Look forward to the end of the week. Thank you melissa. Uhhuh. Meanwhile the wintry mix is really impacting Road Conditions tonight as we mentioned. Thats right. Matt pelman in the Traffic Center with the latest on the trouble spots. Hi, matt. One of the most interesting parts of this rick and monica is we saw a very early rush hour this afternoon, around 1 00 p. M. , 2 00 p. M. , traffic was really heavy and now at this point when we would normally see the heaviest traffic, things are actually starting to die down. In fact, as we look at the travel times on the schuylkill expressway, they improved by about 10 minutes each time we look at them so now just about a 12 minute delay on the eastbound side. Westbound only four minutes behind. We just saw a trio of salt trucks come through on the schuylkill eastbound by the vine and as long as those trucks are out and about working hard as they have been all afternoon the highways at this point are mostly just wet. You do have to watch on the secondaries, on the sidewalks and if youre just heading out for the first time this afternoon, your car has been sitting outside it will be covered in a thin layer of ice. On the big picture were doing okay on 95. Speeds in the 20s. Some slowing on the walt whitman bridge for sure as you get into new jersey. More on that in just a sec and there are some crashes in the suburbs like in ambler a new one along butler pike at susquehanna road. Downed pole in horsham blocking babylon road. Willow brook road or tournament drive gets you around that. If youre heading to the pizzeria uno in lionville youre good to go. There was a crash on 100. Looks like it just cleared out. Overturned propane truck blocking kennett pike route 52. Baird road greenwood road or creek road gets you around that. I talked about the slow speeds on the walt whitman bridge new jersey bound its because 42 southbound is also extra heavy. There was a crash up ahead by 295 but that, too, just cleared. So, things are improving for the most part but well check it again, rick and monica, in the next half hour. All right. Well see you then. Thanks matt. Local School Districts werent taking any chances with this tricky weather today. Many let classes out early to get students home before the roads turned messy. Action news was at Lower Merion High School in ardmore just as school was letting out for the day. Lets head out now to Annie Mccormick lie in hunt live in hunting park. Annie, what are the roads looking like at this hour. Reporter just within the past half hour we really start to see the rain come down. You heard matt talking about the volume really is significantly less than it normally would be at this hour. Normally here at whitaker and hunting park you would see car after car here but because the city was anticipating this, thats why a number of those School Districts like you were just talking about had an early dismissal and also a number of work places. Well, take a look at this video. This is video for the Streets Department began a salting operation today, this afternoon, prepared with 70 trucks ready for whatever comes their way. They have 35,000 tons of salt at their disposal. Now, crews will be on duty through the night including overnight. Theyre waiting to see how this forecast plays out to see how big of a salting operation they need to have. Take a listen. Give a little bit of traction. Its the cold ground, the untreated asphalt. If that hits its just going to freeze and its going to give a little slow going until the salt gets to it. We do have a lot of residual salt from this past weekends snow eventually. Reporter back out here live again the precipitation that weve been seeing since weve been out in this area of hunting park for several hours, this is really the heaviest that weve seen it come down. Also within the past half hour we started to see ice form on the sidewalks. Again, theyre also hoping to have salting on city sidewalks as well. They also are giving tips to people on their own to have shovels ready, to be prepared so that that way they can also help their neighbors out if theyre walking in front of their houses or their workplace as well hopefully so no one trips and falls. Reporting live in hunting park, Annie Mccormick channel6 action news. Back to you. Thank you annie. Now lets switch to bob brooks live in roxborough for us tonight. Its not just icy conditions but also water main breaks that continue to be a problem across the city, right bob. Reporter monica absolutely. Its been happening across the city and many in the Roxborough Manayunk area. Many have stressed the fact that the Water Department isnt fixing things, theyre out there working. I spoke with an official who told me theyre facing more than 20 water main breaks a day so theyre very busy. Behind me just the latest one that happened up here on larson street. Its still closed. Monica it created a layer of ice 2inches thick out here. Its been a busy day for the philadelphia water crews, fixing water main breaks and neighbors cleaning up after the water froze. Happening all around the city right now, all around manayunk. So, its pretty bad out here. Reporter just this afternoon on two streets off ridge avenue we saw two water main breaks. One on larsden street that forced it to be closed and martin street where it flooded and froze in backyards and leaked into caitlins basement. It is way too cold. When you look up at the weather and you see that in alaska its warmer than here. Reporter rest assured the Water Department is as busy fixing water main breaks as theyve ever been. Earlier today we caught up with spokesman john. We have seen 20 water main breaks weary paring. It may take crews awhile to get to each break with such a high volume. Typically in the winter we go to a 12hour shift. Right now were on 16. 16 hours doesnt mean theyre done in 16 hours. Reporter warmer weather expected this week could create or reveal new breaks. The ground is pretty much frozen solid. As the ground thaws there could be some water main breaks broken underground that we havent seen yet. Reporter now he asks everyone have patience. First they have to fix the water mains, then they can get to individual homes and get the water back on if theyre out and the other thing Manayunk Roxborough is famous for are their hills. Its raining. Its only a matter of time before the roads start getting slick so please be careful. For now reporting live in roxborough, bob brooks channel6 action news. Bob, thank you. A broken water pipe forced the evacuation of the Fairview Care center in springfield township Montgomery County this afternoon. A spokesperson says the busted pipe flooded a nonpatient area and prompted them to shut down electricity to the building. A school bus and several ambulances were brought in so patients and residents wouldnt have to sit in the cold while officials were deciding what to do. Theyve now decided to relocate all 108 people to other Nursing Care Centers in the area. And as always action news will be on tomorrow morning to help you navigate any slick spots on the roads and to keep you up to date on School Delays and closures. Yes, you know, i always say it only takes a little bit of ice to cause some big problems and thats what were getting out there in some parts of our region. Im want to show you a photo george posted from kenilworth in North Coventry township Chester County. You can see that light glaze of ice over the grille. He says that his deck, his railings all covered in ice. Really what you get in the form of wintry precipitation depends on the temperature at all layers of the atmosphere. This shows it pretty well. If you have cold air all the way from 5,000 feet to the surface, that is easy, you get snow. However if you have a thin layer of warmer air and then colder air, what happens is snowflakes will melt and then they refreeze. Thats sleet. Thats the ice pellets. Then if you get warmer air lasting even longer but theres still cold air at the surface it becomes rain but its freezing rain. If you have warmer air that extends down to the surface then its just rain. I do want to remind people in south jersey and delaware, though, although it can be just rain, with that frozen ground it will be freezing on the untreated surfaces so definitely need to be careful tonight. Once we get through tonight we have a big pattern change ahead. Accuweather highlights show you tomorrow the warmest day in two weeks. By friday temperatures rising close to 60 degrees. Comes with a price though a soaking rain on friday, about one to 2 inches of rain but with temperatures near 60 were talking about rain, not freezing rain. Tonight, though, weve got the wintry precipitation. Double scan live showing that snow is really cutting off but weve got the freezing rain across the i95 corridor including philadelphia right now. Its moving through woodbury, glassboro. Youll notice that jenkintown norristown malvern downingtown its pretty much ended for you but theres a wave of some more precipitation, some rain thats been pulling out of virginia and this will kind of fill it in across south jersey after we head through the overnight hours. Dover you can see its rain but again, with that frozen ground, untreated surfaces will be icy so do be careful tonight. Temperatures tell the story. Philadelphia 31 degrees right now. Weve dropped from 32 degrees at last hour. Allentown reading lancaster youve been stuck in the 20s. Thats why you had snow and sleet. As far as Atlantic City airport 36, dover 36. Thats why its rain but again, that frozen ground. Do be careful. Satellite and radar showing its a pretty quick moving system. Its not a major winter storm. It continues to push to the south and the east but notice some of that moisture moving out of northern virginia. That will allow it to hold on a little bit longer along the coast. So, future tracker showing around 8 oclock tonight still have that freezing rain just holding on in philadelphia. I think it will be shutting off between 8 oclock and 9 oclock. By about 11 30, midnight its rolling off the coast. Clearing skies tonight. Tomorrow morning it will be dry. Nothing falling from the sky. However, there will be slick spots with temperatures below freezing, driveways parking lots and sidewalks could be icy. So, the five day at 5 00 showing tomorrow what a turn around. 42 degrees, partly sunny skies. 39 on wednesday. Thursday 48, mostly cloudy, some late drizzle. Friday, 58 degrees, periods of rain. On saturday, a lingering shower, too, but still mild for the eagles game 50 but it cools off pretty dramatically by sunday. Well talk about that in the sevenday forecast. We have warmer days ahead guys. Thank goodness. Thank you cecily. Quick break. More news right after these messages. Stay with us. Excuse me everyone paul . Paul . Keep on scratchin hello again. 5 30 now and we continue with our accuweather alert tonight. A combination of snow and ice is pushing through the area during the evening rush. As cold as its been it doesnt take much to make a big mess of thing. Live look from city hall cameras. Road crews have been treating the roads throughout the city. The concern centers on the cold ground and the potential for ice and of course hopefully various accidents. Weve dispatched mobile6 to check the roads. Currently its in the conshohocken area and seems like things are rolling along just fine. The philadelphia Streets Department says it has been treating the roads. If the road looks wet in conditions like tonight you should assume the worse, assume it is black ice. We have our team tracking the snow and ice tonight. John rawlins is out with power crews. Matt pelman is watching the highways and byways. Lets begin with meteorologist Melissa Magee with the latest word from accuweather at this hour. Melissa. Yeah, rick and monica we are tracking this moisture at narrow band of precipitation from new england down across the midatlantic. You can see that on storm tracker6 live double scan radar 3d. The precipitation is light in nature. The timing its coming just in time for that ride home. Street level with storm tracker6 showing you the snow we had in our northwest suburbs already starting to depart and exit but we still have got that light glaze there along the i95 corridor from trenton, philadelphia, also pressing into wilmington and media. Even across interior sections of south jersey we are tracking that moisture. As far as what we can expect as we go throughout the rest of today, as far as the delays are concerned, at j. F. K. And la guardia more than two hours, 112 minute delay there in newark, new jersey. Philadelphia having a delay right now of 47 minutes. So, check ahead with your carrier for some delays at your local airports. The precipitation will be ending from west to east. In the Lehigh Valley and our northwest suburbs its ending about now and already over for the most part philadelphia, the i95 metro area ending between 8 oclock and 10 oclock. And there in south jersey and central delaware, ending some 10 00 p. M. To midnight which is why that Winter Weather advisory has been extended until midnight into areas of south jersey and delaware. Tracking that light precipitation. Once it kicks out milder air returns as early as tomorrow. Well take a closer look coming unwith the full and exclusive accuweather forecast. Rick. Melissa thank you. Lets switch live to action News Reporter john rawlins who is in cherry hill new jersey. John, you spent the day meeting with utility crews preparing for whatever falls from the sky throughout the evening, right . Reporter rick, correct. And something is falling from the sky. Weve had an on again off again drizzle. Its definitely on again. Its actually a rain. It is starting to glaze up very lightly on some untreated surfaces metal cars, sidewalks, things like that. Certainly not enough glaze or not enough ice to impact a power company. Theres no doubt about it. Thats not going to happen. Both peco and pse g say they are not expecting any problems tonight from this weather. We are cautiously optimistic. Reporter jim is the manager of pse gs Southern Division that provides power to a half million south jersey customers. For residential utility lines like these, it can take as little as a quarter inch of ice to trigger power disruptions. A half inch can be crippling. His optimism is based on the amount of ice in the most recent forecast he had when we spoke to him early this afternoon. The latest forecast we have is a trace amount to maybe just a small amount of icing. So, based upon that forecast, we dont anticipate much problems, john, but were going to hold some crews just in case. Reporter forecasts can change both pse g and peco say theyll have crews on standby tonight. Maybe the biggest evident ice event in recent years was part of a winter storm back in early february 2014. Especially hard hit with freezing rain Chester County where two to 310ths of an inch of ice coated trees. Many trees collapsed pulling down power lines to more than 175,000 chester customers. Another half million customers lost power region wide in that same storm. To be clear, nothing like that is expected tonight obviously. But there is as we have said many times here its starting to freeze and have a slight glaze on the excuse me on the sidewalks and you need to be careful getting around. No one anticipating what is in the forecast to present much of a problem to the Power Companies tonight. Live in cherry hill, john rawlins channel6 action news. Back to you guys. All right, john, thank you. Time now to get an update on the commute home this evening. All right. Over to matt pelman live in the action news Traffic Center with details. Could be a slow go matt. It could but the good news, rick and monica, this is not our worst commute in the last few weeks. However, weve got some pretty bad commutes in the last few weeks. Part of what is keeping this one not so bad is so many people headed home early today. So, now were starting to see lighter volume and they have so much salt on the roads that the highways at this point are just wet. Like 95 there at the walt whitman bridge. I would continue to really watch your speeds on the ramps, especially, and as you round corners cause you could hit a slick patch. On the walt whitman bridge itself speeds have improved eastbound heading into new jersey. Still on 676 southbound you have some Single Digits merging up with 42. And in southwest philadelphia, were still watching that overturned truck at island and lindbergh. Debris spilled there, too, so i would still avoid that. In the burbs reports of icy conditions especially in Chester County. In fact in thornbury theres a crash closing westtown thornton road. Stick with concorde road to get around that and in Kennett Square still have the overturned propane piking blocking kennett pike. Creekcreek could be an alternat. Water main break on rancocas road in mount holly. Slick spots but could be worse. Rick and monica. Could always be worse. Thank you sir. Thanks matt.
