We have the snow now moving away from us and pulling away. The bulk of it ending even the little flurries by about midnight and theres some clearing to our west and we are expecting sunshine that will help melt that snow. Overall we did spist 45 inches of snow across the region. Some outlying spots actually wept up to 8 inches but nearby valley forge only 2, the closer you went to the shore, some areas by the coast only about 2 or 3 inches. Keep in mind that some of this initial snow melted before it had a chance to accumulate so you might have a little less than this on your lawn in some of these spots. Temperatures this morning as nydia mentioned have really dropped. 29 degrees in philadelphia right now, 29 in millville, 18 degrees currently in allentown and reading and as we take a look at the wind still a little bit of a factor and the wind chill making it feel like its just 19. Not only do we have the slick spots still existing on a lot of road surfaces, but we also have raw conditions as we head out. As we go through the day we are going to improve a little bit. By noon well shoot up to 38 with a good deal of sunshine melting a lot of those icy patches and 41 is your high at 3 00 by 7, well be back down to 33. Southerners of course arent accustomed to the weather and the towns arent equipped to remove it. And drivers had a tough time here in virginia. Up to 2 inches fell this weekend but plummeting temperatures led to ice overnight. We are dealing with. In south boston, massachusetts you would expect that stuff. There are some icy patches and some snowy roads that didnt get a chance to get dried out overnight. Its been rare recently but we have gotten that 1inch plus with the first december storm. 39 degrees is todays high in the lehigh valley. We are looking at sunshine there with clouds later on at night and at the shore probably getting up to about 42. In philadelphia, 42 degrees. Chilly conditions out there. Sunshine eventually giving way to some clouds but i do expect a decent amount of sun overnight and this is actually from friday. We are of course now not looking at any of that snow and overnight we will probably see those temperatures dip a little bit below freezing later this evening. So this afternoon well get some sun, highs getting up to about 40 or so. That will melt some of that stuff but then we could get a refreeze as we go into the overnight hours. A medical breakthrough is giving hope to some women who have had uterine transplants and hoping to give birth to their own babies. How this procedure could soon be done here in philadelphia. Reporter its a medical milestone. For the first time in the United States a woman who had a uterus transplant has given birth. The baby boy was born last month via csection at Baylor UniversityMedical Center in dallas. His mother is part of a Clinical Trial there. Researchers at penn medicine recently launched a similar trial. The goal is to help women without a functioning uterus to be able to carry a child with a transplanted uterus. Until last month it had only been done successfully in sweden, so there is static it worked in texas. You throw your hands up and cheer. Im so happy for the patient. This is a long haul for them and i can only, having spoken to these patients, i can imagine this womans joy. Im so incredibly happy for her. Reporter the team at penn is currently screening possible patients. Dozens of experts have signed on to help. A transplant surgeon says just the surgery itself is extremely complex. The arteries and the veins of the uterus are very delicate structures, theyre in an an domically challenging place in the body. I think its probably the most transplant that weve undertaken. Reporter but theyve been practicing in the lab and today there is an even greater sense of hope. Now that weve seen that baylor can do it, i think that gives everybody more confidence that we can do it. Reporter at baylor they used a living donor. The penn team will only be using deceased donors. And in all cases the transplant is temporary. Its removed after a woman gives birth. That snow long gone and weve got some breakup in the clouds, were expecting plenty of sunshine, melting going on right now temperatures are well below freezing in most areas and we are looking at that freeze up on sidewalks and side streets in particular and even some icy patches on main roads. Be careful early this morning. Later today a high of 41 degrees, lots of sunshine. Well get melting under way and we get into about 9 00 or 10 00 tonight when we start getting closer to the freezing mark and that means a refreeze on some surfaces is possible. Wherever weve gotten melting today and it hasnt totally dried off. 41 is your high under the sun. Not too bad. Operation santa at the Main Post Office in philadelphia. Every year people step up and offer hope to people dealing with heartbreak during the holidays. Dear santa. Dear santa. Every year we get hundreds of letters from needy families. My friend david has had a rough year. My mom trying to move right now so she cant give them all the things they want for christmas. Operation santa is a program thats been going on for about a hundred years. Its actually geared towards helping needy families around the time of the holidays. A lot of people been laid off this year. We have our postal elves volunteer to actually process the letters. Just families with one to three children. Weve had heartfelt stories from families the parents lost their jobs. I worked for three years at my job that is now closing down. Theres a lot of needy families that have had disasters and tragedies. We also just had a big house fire and lost everything. Customers read the letters. They see the letters that they would like to help out and they would actually purchase their gifts and actually bring it back here and to mail it. Theres a dad in need who has two daughters so i hope to go out and get something for those daughters and maybe Something Special for him. Its been very generous here in the philadelphia area. We actually have had an opportunity to help families in need. Just when you think youre doing bad, theres somebody doing worse. Thats such a special program. Beautifully captured. Nice job.
