Reporter we just wrapped up a press conference from officials here on the ground in who are still trying to get to the bottom that of question of why, why Stephen Paddock 64 years old drove here checked into this Hotel Thursday night with more than 10 rifles and opened fire on 22,000 people. President trump at the white house addressing the deadliest mass shooting in modern u. S. History. It was an act of pure evil. The fbi and the department of Homeland Security are working closely with local authorities to assist with the investigation. Reporter in las vegas, the investigation just beginning. This Morning Police identifying the shooter as 64yearold Stephen Paddock. Paddock checking into the mandalay bay resort on september 28th and in his room, at least 10 rifles. Last night just after 10 00 p. M. In las vegas, paddock firing from the 32nd floor into a crowd of about 22,000 concertgoers. Police believe paddock shot and killed himself prior to their entry into his hotel room. Survivors describing a terrifying scene on the ground. No matter which direction you went in, no matter where you took cover there was at least two to three bodies that were a part of it and you didnt know where you were safe. Reporter stormy warren was a cohost of the concert. He said his first thought was pyrotechnics. Instead, it was gunshots. Totally haphazard. It seemed like he just wanted to hit that group of people and as many as possible. That is Kristen Holmes reporting from las vegas for abc news. Action News Reporter Katherine Scott is in our Satellite Center and katherine, a few people from our area were in vegas at the time of the shooting and you have their stories. Reporter thats right, rick. Whether they were inside the concert when the shooting took place or they were caught up in the chaos outside, people from our area describe those terrifying minutes of confusion and fear. Thats where i was and we started running. Reporter katie of horsham and her husband were in las vegas attending the route 91 harvest Music Festival. She shot this video on her cell phone as country star jason aldean was on the stage. Not long before the gunman opened fire on the concertgoers from the 32nd floor of the mandalay bay resort and casino. Immediate reaction is to look up to the sky and youre like oh, someone is shooting off fireworks. Reporter she quickly realized it was rapid gunfire. It was chaos. Mass panic, chaos many people were running and falling. People were kicking the security fences out of the way and kicking the gate opened. We were running behind hotels. People were hiding behind walls not knowing where it was coming from. Reporter near the bellagio christian of south philadelphia was walking with his friends. And it was pretty terrifying because we just didnt know, you know we didnt know what was going on. Reporter someone called to alert him of the shooting but he says at that point details were vague. As the group approached their hotel, they saw an Outdoor Television and learned more. Thats when people started running. They followed the crowd into caesars and hid. As we get into caesars, i guess all the patrons and everyone in there, security at that point was outside trying to hold people from going in or out. But i guess a whole rush of people went into the hotel onto the gaming floor. At that time everyone on the gaming floor kind of just ducked down. Tables were flying, chips were flying. Reporter they made their way up to their hotel rooms and for hours thats where they remained. Caesars is on lockdown. Nobody is allowed to leave a room. Anyone who is in a room has to stay there. Reporter as for the fur meisters they had planned to take a late flight out of tonight but theyre now trying to get on an earlier flight home to our area. Walter perez joins us live from Philadelphia International airport and walter, its been an emotional morning there for some travelers in the wake of what happened in las vegas. Reporter no doubt about it, rick. We spoke with a few people who say that while they didnt witness exactly what happened they were a little too close for comfort. Its ridiculous. I was minutes away from being in that same area. Reporter alicia burns of East Oak Lane says she had drip by the route 91 harvest Music Festival grounds in las vegas just a short time before it would become the site of the deadliest mass shooting in modern u. S. History. Burns was among dozens of other passengers who landed this morning at Philadelphia International airport from Mccarran International where flights were immediately halted following the shooting. They said that we had to wait because, you know, i guess the hotel where it was happening was not too far from the airport and they didnt want anybody taking off or landing. Reporter and many of the people we spoke with who left las vegas this morning didnt even realize the severity of what happened until they landed at phl. Bobby and Simone Cummins of wilmington say it almost doesnt seem real. We were in vegas, you know, having a good time and to find out Something Like this happened, you know, its kind of horrifying. Were glad that we were on the plane when it did take place but it can happen anywhere. Reporter and of course the people we spoke with while expressing relief for themselves offered their thoughts and prayers for the victims and for their families. And so to recap the breaking news story out of las vegas this afternoon, authorities now say 58 people are dead, more than 515 others injured in what is now the worst mass shooting in american history. The suspect, 64yearold Stephen Paddock opened fire on a country Music Festival last evening. Paddock shot into the crowd below from a window at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and casino. Police have yet to determine a motive. Despite a claim of responsibility from isis, the fbi says paddock had no connection to an International Terrorist organization. President trump will travel to las vegas on wednesday. Trump spoke to the nation this morning calling the shooting an acts of pure evil and saying the nation must stay unified. This reminder, 6abc. Switching gears now, as we turn to the accuweather forecast on this first monday of october and our run of stunning autumnal temperatures continues as we look live from sky6 at the ben franklin bridge. The weekend was absolutely perfect and its another great day to get outside and enjoy lunch alfresco perhaps. Meteorologist, david murphy already outside on the terrace with more on the work week forecast. So far so good, david. Yeah, so far so good, rick. We started out rather chilly this morning and over the weekend it was nice although in a lot of spots we stayed in the 60s. Today were going to give you a few more degrees on your thermometer. Lets start you with satellite. Obviously theres very little pronounced cloud cover around both on this imagery and overhead on the terrace. Barely a cloud in sight. All the stuff on the other side of toronto. We dropped to 51 this morning. In allentown you got down into the upper 30s briefly. 42 was the low in reading. 34 almost the freezing mark in the poconos but now, well, weve rebounded rather nicely. In fact, that 69degree reading in philadelphia currently matches yesterdays high and being that its only the midday hours, weve got several hours to improve upon that and we think most of these numbers are going to go up by between five and 6 degrees. In philadelphia, well call it a high of 75. A few above the average of 72. The overnight low, 54, right on average, although some suburbs will be down into the 50s. And as we take a look at where were going in the forward forecast over the next 24 hours, this afternoon in the mid 70s for a couple of hours and then cool again overnight getting down to 53 by this model at seven in the morning. At noon, rick, tomorrow afternoon looks like pretty much a copy of today. Then we get even warmer heading into the end of the work week. Congressman Steve Scalise who was shot and nearly died at a mass shooting in june tweeted this morning that he and his wife are praying for the victims in las vegas. Scalise just returned to Congress Last week. New jersey senator Robert Menendez expressed his condolences. I dont know when well wake up to the reality of the challenges of gun violence in our country and do something about it. Menendez pushed for additional gun control measures after the pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando Florida which claimed 49 lives. Dozens of people caught up in the horror in las vegas risked their own lives to help others. Some shielded victims from the gunfire. Others tried to get the wounded to safety. An off duty nurse says every time there was a break in the gunfire she and others went back trying to help. There was so many people just normal citizens, doctors, cops, paramedics, like nurses, just off duty, everyone was communicating and working together. You got this person, you got this person, you got this person. It was it was completely horrible but it was absolutely amazing. The nurse says sadly so many of the victims were young people and some could not be saved but that group effort did manage to save others. Now to the crisis in the caribbean. Its been almost two weeks of anguish for the people of puerto rico but more help is coming as they try to recover from hurricane maria. A flatbed truck arrived from newark, delaware, this morning to begin transporting donations to the port of wilmington. Those donations will be shipped to puerto rico. Abcs Serena Marshall has more on the federal response to the disaster. Reporter back at the white house, President Trump responding to the crisis in puerto rico. Were getting a lot of things done really at a record clip so were very happy with that and ill be going there on tuesday. Reporter he spent his sunday watching the president s cup Golf Tournament from the 14th green but not forgetting those suffering from the storm. Were going to dedicate this trophy to all of those people that went through so much. Reporter the president s Disaster Management including tweets we done a great job with the almost impossible situation he tweeted. In another one, accusing the san juan mayor of poor leadership writing they want everything to be done for them when it should be a community effort. As of saturday, 45 percent of the island still without drinking water. The capitols mayor responding to the president s ire. Theres only one goal and that is saving lives. Reporter just 25 miles outside of san juan, politics and the president couldnt be further from their minds. Nobodys come to help. No. Reporter the reyes family telling abcs alex perez they still have no power, no cell service, many homes with no roofs. In a small town tears as fema arrives. Not enough, not fast enough. We know that, they know that. Reporter as the military arrives the lieutenant in charge agreeing. We are not satisfied with what we have been able to do so far. These people deserve more help and were going to bring it. Reporter President Trump heads to the i would island on tuesday. Serena marshall, abc news, washington. Back here, two people were injured in a house fire in burlington county, new jersey. Smoke poured from the house here on the 100 block of treat street in mount holly. Heavy fire was showing on the sector floor of the twin house. Crews say they had to work around the clutter inside the home to get the fire under control. Two people are being checked out for smoke inhalation. So far no word yet on a cause. Taking a look outside we have plenty of sunshine at penns landing. Look look at how glassy and smooth the delaware inlet is where they park all the yachts and sailboats. Not much wind out there and really comfortable conditions building. Temperature 69 degrees, your dewpoint at 74, winds only 5 Miles Per Hour and the ocean temperature starting to slip as were into october now, 68 degrees off atlantic city. Satellite shows you cloud cover well off to the west on the other side of toronto and down below richmond, virginia. Around here bright blue skies and probably staying pretty darn bright the rest of the way. And temperatures are treating us well. Most of these numbers are a couple of degrees above average. 75 in allentown, 76 this afternoon in reading. Heading to 74 in lancaster. 73 in trenton. 75 in philadelphia and wilmington. Close to that in millville and down the shore 71 in cape may and 72 along the boardwalk in atlantic city. Once again, we have a rip Current Issue although its a moderate risk and not the high risk that we had for about a week going up until last friday and into the weekend. But you still want to use caution. Of course with those Ocean Temperatures dipping down into the 60s now, probably not a whole lot of you thinking about going into the water but if you do you want to use extreme caution because the sea is still a little bit rough. Trying to calm it down after maria went out to sea. 73 is the temperature at 2 oclock, looking for a high of 75 i expect well hit that around 3 30 or 4 oclock today. Still holding 71 by 6 oclock but its that time of the year that once the sun drops the temperatures tend to drop especially when youve got light winds and clear skies. 8 oclock down to 64, by 10 oclock 61 and philadelphia gets into the low 50s tonight, some suburbs the mid 40s so like this morning it will be a cool one as you step outside early tomorrow. But then in the afternoon with High Pressure in control off to the north and a northerly flow, it will be another very comfortable afternoon for you. Still sunny for the most part staying mild with that high of 75 and winds remaining light, humidity still low. So, pretty much a copy tomorrow of what we had today. And i want to just take a quick look at tropical satellite. You see a lot of high clouds illustrated with those bright shades of red and some yellow, maybe some rain here and there underneath those. But right now we have no tropical systems anywhere in the atlantic, the caribbean or the gulf of mexico and its been awhile since weve been able to say that. For the next 48 hours we do not expect any tropical development. Of course the season doesnt end until november 30th so we got a ways to go before were totally out of the woods. Tree pollen really dying down, so is grass pollen but we have moderate problem with weeds and mold kind of an issue this week. So, those of you suffering from allergies probably still want to keep those medications going. Remember the first frost generally doesnt hit until late october around here. 75 degrees is todays high, 75 tomorrow. A couple of nice ones. Then on wednesday, sunny and warmer, 78. And on thursday up to 82 with a shower. A front coming through, clouds and sun friday. Probably dry and easing back down to 79. Then for the coming weekend, looks like 75 on saturday with perhaps a slight chance of a popup shower. And on sunday, for the eagles for the second straight eagles home game its going to be pretty warm. 77 degrees, partly sunny in philadelphia on sunday, rick. All right, david, thank you will.
