Hes described as an eyewitness having dropped his guitar once he realized it was all too real. As brian ross unfolded over 4 1 2 minutes. It must have seemed like an eternity for those who were living through it earlier this evening. As weve said police have reported the shooter is down. They took him down on the 32nd floor of the mandalay bay hotel. This was the Moment Police went in. Im at the suspects door. I need everyone in the hallway. We need a response from this guy to see if hes in here or moved somewhere else. The audience on the 32nd floor saw an explosive breach needs to move back. Breach, breach, breach. Okay. That was the moment breach. That was an explosion. The explosion was from the bliss right there. They did take down the shooter. Want to go back to las vegas, matt guttman on the scene. Reporter yeah im here. I hear you. Hey, george. Everywhere you go, people come to you and they say we were the runs who were running away. Those folks who stopped to talk were in the mandalay bay and i asked them if they had actually shot any video and they said nobody shot video. We were only running and thats the story youll hear across the city right now. Folks were caught obviously off guard. Nobody expects a lone shooter like this. But the number of the bullets fired. The mass of the chaos. When youre talking about 10,000 people plus just at that concert venue alone and then youre talking about the tens of thousands of other people who were all over the city, out for the night life, here for the concert and the bulk of the hotels here, from mandalay bay all the way to i think we lost him. Want to go to lindsay. We know from police more than 20 dead, more than 100 injured. Reporter thats right. 26 patients were received here at the medical center. 12 in Critical Condition. Two were pronounced dead at hospital. Police not allowing family members in at this time they say theyre trying to assess the situation. You can imagine this is further gutwrenching agony for families arriving here. Not only can they cant get in to see their loved ones, they cant even get an update on their position. The police have the entrance blocked off. Its relatively quiet here. Weve seen two ambulances that arrived within the last 15 minutes or so with flashing lights. No sirens on. But emt working on someone in the back. Now this hospital is where the majority of the injured have been taken. But again, because were talking about more than 100 people injured, this is one of several hospitals in the area where victims are being treated. And also you have 20 dead among them Police Officers additionally we know at least two officers are injured. One of them critically. Right. Those were Police Officers on the scene. We heard that earlier. Thanks very much. Want to bring in joseph who is an eyewitness on the scene at the concert. Joe, thank goodness youre okay but you were with a friend who did get hit . Yeah. I was with my friend, she got hit. Right shoulder. Is she okay . I just talked to her family, i talked to her brother and they told her that shes in stable condition. Tell us how the scene unfolded from your perspective. He described it pretty well. We all thought it was like fireworks going off on the strip and you know it kept going and going and jason aldean kind of ran off stage, everybody started running. It was absolutely chaos and were lucky we got out. How did you get out exactly . How far did you have to run . We had to run a decent amount. We actually had to hop a fence to get out. People hopping over this wall that we hopped. Were lucky we got out. How long did it take you . It took us probably no less than 5 minutes. And could you tell from where you were where the shots were coming from . We knew they were coming from somewhere on the strip. They didnt sound like it was coming from inside of the venue. It sounded like it was coming from closer to las vegas boulevard. But you were able to get to your car and get far away from the scene. Where are you now . Well, i had a friend pick me up at the hospital because the hospital is on lockdown, theres police everywhere. Theres police in riot gear literally standing in front of the emergency room. My dads actually a clergyman and they wouldnt let him in to check the status of my friend. And your friend who was shot at first you wouldnt even positive she was shot . No. I wasnt sure at all. She kept complaining that she was hurt and i felt up her whole body, i lifted up her shirt a little bit and we didnt see anything. Once we got to the designated place we agreed to go to, we doublechecked her again and it turned out to be a pretty large wound in her right shoulder, probably about an inch and a half. Wow. That is incredibly large wound. And just chaotic scene in those first moments. I was. I mean when everybody started kind of running, it was. We hit the ground a couple of times probably on our way out. It was a war zone. War zone. From what we know the shooter on the 32nd floor had just an open shot on entire scene as were seeing it up on the screen. How far were you from the stage at first . We were pretty close to the stage. Thank goodness youre okay. Thank you for joining us this morning and we hope your friend is okay. Were sending her our best wishes. Want to bring back our chief investigating correspondent brian ross. Theyre trying to find out everything possible. Searching for a companion for questioning at this point. Not knowing whether that person is involved at all. Clearly theyve gone to the suspects home where the companion would have been she was not there so theyre now looking for her. Theyre having a bolo. Be on the look out, two vehicles theyre searching for. And brad garrett, our former special agent, we now know, we see Marilou Danley, thats the Person Police are searching for right now. Even though this unfolded over 4 1 2 minutes of shooting, those are the two vehicles, the police were able to pinpoint where these shots were coming from relatively quickly, take him down. One is that you could vigorously probably see the fire visually probably see the fire from the barrel. Perhaps someone was in close proximity in the next room, in short order they figured out what direction its coming from. So quickly assess what floor it was on. Again, based on witness information and obviously they breached the door. They had a Comfort Level their guy was inside whatever room it was on the 32nd floor. Room 135. We heard from an earlier witness as well who was on the 24th floor. Just had an open shot. A clear view of the location. As brad was saying earlier, this is something that was thought out. Took the time to get the ammunition, the weapon. And brad garrett, from what we know about the shooting so far, about person of interest they are searching for as well, any kind of a profile you can put together or what kind of questions would you be asking in these moments . George, this is going to be a guy that has some sort of grievance. Is he mad at society because his perception is that society has treated him an awful way so hes going to inflict damage on the rest of us . Is it in particular to the hotel, outside where the concert occurred, or is it some sort of religious philosophical islamic, et cetera, driven sort of acan ta. This would be sort of a new approach if its an islamic extremist. Basically everything is on the table with isis as far as ways to kill people. So well have to see. To the extend that he really had an effective weapon and he down this crowd. Obviously he wouldnt want to have been on the second floor. He wouldnt have been high enough so may have asked some of those questions in a very innocuous way when he checked in, but clearly thought this out and said, tonight is the night im going to go do this. If it were connected to isis, if it were connected to al qaeda or somebody inspired by them, they usually want people to know. They do want people to know and so maybe that would suggest on the front end this is not the case, that this is really a personal grievancedriven sort of shooting. If you ask me to guess my it may fall into that category. We really dont know enough yet, you know, to make that statement and as everyone knows, if its islamic extremism, theyll take credit as soon as they sort of figure out exactly what theyve got here because many of these attacks now driven by religious extremists, you know, isis doesnt have a clue theyre about to go do this. They do it and go, oh, we can take credit for that and then they jump in so well have to see. An important point that brad just makes. Very opportunistic often for isis. The name has not been released by authorities there but the person theyre looking at who is the companion of that Marilou Danley is a 64yearold white male, not the classic isis extremist. 64yearold white male, local resident in las vegas. Weve seen his companion as well, his roommate who police are looking for right now, but we dont know there she is right there. Marilou danley but dont know and havent seen any communication, anything posted. Nothing like that. Police are now fairly certain that he acted alone or at least hes the only shooter. He was the lone gunman they believe all the firing came from that one room, room 135 over about a 4 1 2minute, 4 37 we counted with at least 6 or 7 bursts, about 30 rounds in each burst. Extremely powerful and deadly weapons, an automatic weapon which is extremely difficult to obtain even on the black market . This was the scene as those shots were fired. You see people just running away from that open area with tens of thousands watching the jason aldean concert. One vincent sager, want to bring him in right there and, vincent, you actually saw people get shot . Vincent, can you hear me . I think we lost him. If you keep this up on the screen for several minutes for well over an hour there were reports more than one shooter in more than one location. As people ran about from hotel to hotel, the echoes of the sound would bounce off the walls in those tall las vegas hotels. People not sure where to go, what to do to save themselves with bullets raining down, hard to tell where the fire something coming from. Okay, i believe we do have vincent sager. Can you hear me . Yeah, i can hear you. So, vincent, tell us what you saw and heard. I was told you actually saw people get shot. Yeah, i mean, i dont know if youve seen the video that has been out there, where we were standing in the front of the stage right closest to mandalay bay, you first heard a couple like single shots, you know, they were muffled so almost sounds like a pyrotechnic gone bad then we started hearing gunshots going over and then it would stop and then from there on we didnt know whether or not it was a malfunction of pyrotechnics or a firework and then after you look up and see jason aldean run off the stage and stop and people running in front of us or somebody got shot theyre saying theyre down and we had people running with blood on their shirt. Theres a gentleman that was more serious, a gentleman saying he got shot in the back and seen a hole in his shirt and blood coming out so thats where you realize something is going down that is serious. Could you tell where the shots were coming from, in which direction did you run. Yeah, you could tell they were coming from mandalay bay where we were at. Once we were away, as i explained, another interview i did a little bit ago it was like playing red light green light with gunshots in terms of everyone was doing, you would hear, you know, him unloading his clip and thats when everybody was ducking and getting down, hiding and as soon as the clip as soon as it stopped you would run we were running away from mandalay bay inside the arena and technically youre sitting ducks. You could actually hear him changing clips. Well, you couldnt hear him changing clips but you know they are. Just like in the video youd hear the gunshots rattling and then it would go quiet then it would be quiet for 35, 40 seconds and you could tell he was reloading. When did you know that you were safe . To about an hour ago. An hour ago. It first started at 10 00. Took us an hour to get off the ground then everyone evacuated mgm. We were staying there then there was a bunch of, you know, accusations going on there were other shooters and other properties and bombs and so everyone was heading to was letting their minds wander and got a little scary when it came to that when people were saying one thing. Where were you getting the information . What had you heard about these reports of other shooters . This was coming off this was coming from from family at the festival getting outside information given to plea on my phone saying what was going on in the news and what they were hearing. You hear one person says one thing and its like playing telephone. You dont know what is accurate compared to what is not until you hear officials we heard from the sheriff a little bit ago. What was your instinct in the moment about what to do . Well, i was with i was with some friends and my first was make sure everyone was safe and get down, make sure take cover. Like i said i was standing up first, thought it was fireworks. But i realized it wasnt fireworks then it was kind of trying to keep people calm. Are all your friends okay . Yeah, we did have a mutual friend that is being taken care of right now. But were here right now. Well, we are glad youre okay, vincent. Thank you for joining us right now as i bring back in our chief investigative correspondent brian ross. You know, the scene they talk about, for several hours after the shooting, not knowing exactly. As rumors spread there were shooters here, shooters there, three or four different hotels, people ran in panic trying to find a safe place and could not and as the eyewitnesses have described to you, george, this morning they really did not feel safe until just recently with the sense that the shooter had been taken down and there was no more gunfire. Just in the last hour or so we see some of the wounded being loaded into ambulances right there. I want to go back to linsey davis at the university hospital. One of many hospitals now taking in the wounded. More than 100 wounded. At least 20 dead according to police. It appears we dont have linsey davis right now. Want to go back in to Pierre Thomas, our senior justice correspondent in washington. Okay. Sorry for the confusion. Linsey, i hear you are with me right now. Tell us whats happening at the university hospital. Reporter yes, so just in the last update we received a few minutes ago the number of patients here at University Medical center has doubled. They now have received more than 50 patients at this hospital. Still were told that 12 are in Critical Condition and still two that have been pronounced dead here at the hospital. The entrance remains blocked off by police cars and so, you know, i mentioned earlier that has to be a huge frustration as far as families and weve seen about three carloads of families try to come to check on the status and condition of their loved one and theres simply not able to get into the hospital at this point and that could change at any time. Police say theyre still trying to assess the situation here. Earlier we had been told that of those injured at the hospital 12 were in Critical Condition. As the numbers doubled overall did the number of critically injured go up, as well. Reporter that did not change. At the same most recent update theyre still giving the same numbers as far as critically those in Critical Condition and those that were pronounced dead so they havent had an increase apparently in those. Okay, linsey davis, thanks very much. Want to go back to Pierre Thomas in washington, our senior justice correspondent as well. We saw at the press conference by sheriff joe not going to say who the source is. Pierre. Reporter yes, george, just been speaking to some Law Enforcement sources and the officials are looking at this as some kind of assaultstyle rifle that may have been augmented to make it fully automatic. Also possible that this was purchased as a fully automatic weapon, again, they have the name of the person they think did it. They are doing an extensive background check on this person to see whether the gun may have been purchased also they are getting information on the ammo, as well. They are at the scene working with local Law Enforcement officials to get some of the cartridges which may have been found as well, george. So extensive investigation under way to look into this persons background, no indications thus far of terrorism but, again, its very, very early in this investigation. Once he get those cartridges and the weapon how long would it generally take to find out where it was purchased, how it got there . Well, one of the things you have to see, sometimes the criminals will file down the serial number, every gun has a serial number on it. Im being told this will be done within hours at the latest, george. This is deemed urgent and again the name of this person is being run through every database that the u. S. Government has to see what kind of picture they can create of the persons background. And so far, though, theyre saying no connection as far as they know so far to International Terrorism. Reporter correct, that is the early indications but, again, george, very fluid situation, very early in the investigation. Thank you, pierre. Chief investigative correspondent brian ross, he was described by the sheriff as the lone wolf type. A lone wolf, 64yearolds white male lived an hour away from las vegas. Searching for a person described as his companion. They put out an alert across the state, across the western part of the United States looking for this woman and looking for two possible vehicles that she could be in. Clearly theyve gone to the home outside las vegas and did not find her there. Now theyre looking for her to see what if anything she might have known about what happened. Those are the two vehicles theyre looking for, as well. A lot of this was there. A hyundai and a Chrysler Pacifica and have the license plate for both as well that being run down at this moment as well. Bolo, be on the lookout for. Every agent and Law Enforcement will be on the lookout for. Patrol cars have automatic license plate readers and come across it or come towards you they can ride it and pick it up. Brad garrett, former fbi special agent. Theyre looking for Marilou Danley. Were not certain shes on the run at this point. We dont know a lot about her. We know nothing about her, george. But anybody that is in close proximity to this shooter lives at the same address, works with them, they association with him can be krit cical. Where did he get the weapon . Dough dont know that. People have other people buy weapons for them and buy them off the black market and at gun shows. Hopefully it will be straightforward he purchased the gun and it comes right back to him but we wont know that for some period of time. So much we dont know at this point but as brian said, 64yearold white male, doesnt seem to fit the profile of someone connected to isis. Typically not and the other thing, george, because of his age, he probably doesnt use the internet, social media like younger people tend to do so his digital footprint may be a lot less. Keep one other thing in mind, george, events like this are triggered by something. We dont know what that is. Ill only suggest since im here in washington, d. C. And was an fbi agent when the d. C. Sniper started shooting, the anniversary is today, october 2nd, 2002. Does that have any relevance to this . I have no clue. Im only suggesting he had some triggering event. Some kind of a triggering event and brian ross, 64yearold white male puts me in mind of the suspect responsible for that shooting at the congressional softball practice. Some sort of grievance, spent his time trying to figure out how to take care of his grievance in some twisted way. This woman, they are looking for now, last known address in mesquite, nevada. Nevada indication how long they were together. Cant tell at this point. We know they are looking for Marilou Danley right now. As were coming up on 6 00 a. M. Here in the east coast, 3 00 a. M. In the west coast, want to go back to our senior justice correspondent Pierre Thomas as well. Pierre, right now based on what theyre seeing, homeland security, atf, fbi, all involved . Everyone involved, george. These agencies in this kind of situation have to know what this is and what this isnt. Again, no early indication of ties to International Terrorism, again, earlier in the investigation but heres why its so critical, george. About there was there would be the potential this could be the beginning of something pretty horrific that there could be additional attacks so thats why Law Enforcement officials from the federal government jump right in with the locals early in these kind of cases to see what they are dealing with. Also, george, i think its unfortunate to point out that Mass Shootings in this country happen on a pretty routine basis where people take assaultstyle rifles and they start shooting and killing people. Usually not to this level. Usually not this many wounded and killed but these type of incidents unfortunately happen pretty regularly in our country. Were talking about every week, every couple of weeks see some kind of mass shooting, this one with the numbers were seeing right now, at least 20 dead, at least 100 injured would be the worst since the pulse nightclub in orlando back in june 2016. Exactly, george. Thats why you saw the federal Law Enforcement response so quickly to assist the locals because when you have this many casualty, the first thing that comes to mind is whether this is an act of terrorism. Again, no indication of ties to International Terrorism in this case so far but Law Enforcement have to be at that sort of level of concern until they know that its not that. The other big difference, brian ross, we remember back in orlando at the pulse nightclub, reports from those on the scene they saw the shooter right next to them going room to room through that club. This one from a high vantage point, 32 floors above the concert. 32 floors of a 43story hotel with a great vantage point. Omar mateen took time out to call 911 and claim responsibility on behalf of isis. Theres nothing like that in this case. We heard that. I want to play it again right now. We heard that moment where the police took down the shooter, breached that hotel room on the 32nd floor with explosives. It was very scary. It was frightening. On the suspects door. I need for everybody in the hallway to be aware of it and get back. Well need to pop this and see if we can have a response from this guy, see if hes in here or moved somewhere else. The audience on the 32nd floor. Exposed a breach and Everybody Needs to move back. All units move back. Breach, breach, breach. Brad garrett, we heard that breach. We heard the explosion right there. At that moment its unclear whether the shooter was alive, was dead but we know the police determined 24ed to go in. Exactly, george. You use explosive breaches on doors so it literally blows the door back into the room and so two things are going on. You can get into the room quickly and it is a distraction at least for the shooter if hes still alive. Thats the whole key. Trying to buy part of a second so you can get a round off before he does but unclear whether he had taken his own life or they ended it. Were not sure whether the explosion would have killed him either. Brad, thanks very much. As i said we are coming up right now on 6 00 a. M. In the east coast. 3 00 a. M. And some will leave for local news but our coverage will continue on abc. And we are back now with the latest on that shooting that unfolded at 10 o 08 at the police, police still looking for the shooters companion. We see her right here, Marilou Danley, be on the lookout for Marilou Danley described as the roommate of the shooter who is a 64yearold white male. We do not know his identity yet but do know Police Searching for those two police cars as well and there you see the flashes from where the shooter had been targeting those at the concert. Brian ross, 32nd floor, mandalay bay hotel. Exactly. Room 135 of the 32nd hotel. 4 1 2
