But thats where the similarities end. Jose is stirring up our coastline and causing some street flooding at the shore. Maria is potentially catastrophic and has the entire island of puerto rico bracing for a direct hit. But as you may know, there is another Natural Disaster thats already happened and is already killing a lot of people. It is tuesday night and the big story on action news tonight is a major earthquake in central mexico. The death toll has reached 139. It will almost certainly go higher. The 7. 1 magnitude quake was centered in the pueblo town of riboso ands close enough 76 miles to cause havoc in mexico city. At least 40 buildings have collapsed. Rescue operations are under way. At least 60 people have been rescued alive in this city of 9 million people. Cameras were rolling in a Television Studio where you could see lights swaying on the ceiling. Cruel irony here, just this morning mexico city held earthquake drills on this, the anniversary of the earthquake in 1985 that killed almost 10,000 people. Now the latest on jose and the storms impact at the jersey shore. Weve got action News Reporter chad pradelli in North Wildwood, Annie Mccormack and cecily tynan tracking the storms path. Start with you, chad. Whats the situation there . Reporter right now, jim, conditions are improving. As you can see, its still very windy. For most of the evening the waves were crashing over the seawall. Over the past hour we havent seen that happen. We have taken joses biggest punch and come out okay. The seawall at Second Avenue and North Wildwood couldnt contain the churning atlantic. People watched, and at times had to grab the little ones and take cover. Spectators seemed astonished by the massive waves. Insane. Insane. Its amazing. Oh, my goodness we missed it, bill. Ive never seen it come over here. Never. Never. And we have been coming down here for years and years. Reporter high tide created minor to moderate street flooding along the bay here in North Wildwood. This was the scene around 8 45. Shutting down ocean drive between avalon and sea hall this evening. And caused extensive beach erosion up and down the shore. In ocean city, people gathered to get a firsthand glimpse of mother natures magnificent power. Its a magnificent thing to watch. But its sad to see the beaches go. We cant really protect these beaches. They werent meant to be protected. Reporter and at high tide we drove around the bay, from what we could tell, it seems the flooding was contained to street nodding. No homes taking on water. Chad pradelli, channel 6 action news. Thank you, chad. Action News ReporterAnnie Mccormack is staked out in margate tonight. They have been in the news all summer and today has not helped. Reporter thats right. All because of the controversial dune project. Take a look behind me. Contractors with the army corp. Of engineers are working through the night. The tidal flooding caused issues with the already controversial dune project. Started at 7 00 this morning. You know, lots of phone calls. Reporter today the mayor of margate city fielded phone calls from angry residents. Then called the army corp. Of engineers himself. They knew this storm was coming. Should have had a lot more pumps. Reporter at issue, the temporary outflow pipes put in place by the army corp. Of engineers during a controversial dune project on margate beaches. Previously residents say the construction created ponds filled with bacterialaden water. But this morning, because of the effects from the storm, tidal water came in through the pipes meant to drain water. That created ponding and flowed into the street. You can see here where backhoes tried to stop the water. In a regular northeastern before the dunes came, well have water which will ebb and flow. Now we have water pond on this side of the dune. Its a concern every day, you know . So we hope they know what theyre doing. Reporter today residents came to see for themselves. The project is meant to build dunes to protect the city. Now the waters coming back from the pipe and thats where all this water came from. Its crazy. Reporter the mayor is concerned about the impact future storms will have. Giving me a very sick feeling in my stomach. This could be disastrous. Reporter back out here live tonight, we did speak to the army corp. Of engineers. A spokesperson telling us tonight they are working, as you can see, to fix the problem. In addition ahead of the storm they stopped dredging several days ago. Moving that dredge to a safer location. Now reporting live, Annie Mccormack, channel 6 action news. Back to you. Thank you, annie. Now, not far from annie in atlantic city, streets flooding in the back base. Like here at albany and west end avenues. Buss and pickups made their own wakes. But drivers in ocean city chose to turn around instead of chancing it. Very high water blocked off west avenue at third street . Ocean city. Lets get the latest on jose from cecily tynan and accuweather. The morning tide could be an issue. It definitely could be. The next two tide cycles looking at the potential for minor coastal flooding. But after 12 days as a hurricane, the longest for an atlantic storm since 1980, jose has now weakened to a Tropical Storm. Maximum sustained winds at 70 miles per hour. And its made that turn to the northeast. So it is moving into cooler waters. It will continue to weaken. Although this storm will meander off the mid atlantic for several days. And wave heights are a factor. Close to the center of the storm, 25foot waves. Closer to land, about 10foot waves. That continues to pile up the water. Thats why we have a coastal Flood Warning until 1 00. But i really think the coastal flooding peaked at this evenings high tide with more moderate tidal flooding. It will be diminishing through the the day tomorrow. While jose is weakening, maria is doing the opposite. To the what you want to see with a hurricane as it gets closer to land. Maximum sustained winds now 175 miles an hour. That ties as the eighthstrongest hurricane on record for the atlantic based on wind speed. And if you look at the eye, you can see that is st. Croix and the u. S. Virgin islands and getting very close. Its only about 30 miles away and look like it will be brushing st. Croix tonight. And tomorrow a direct hit on puerto rico. Likely a category 5. And trending closer to the east coast next week. Talk about that next. This is what Hurricane Maria looked like on the island of guadalupe today. She is a category 5 hurricane. And a Philadelphia Company went down to puerto rico not just to see their family, but to celebrate their wedding anniversary that was today. Not knowing that it was going to strengthen to a category 5, leaving them stranded on the island directly in the storms path. Visiting from the may fair section of the city, rebecca ruiz captured the first signs of Hurricane Maria heading towards puerto rico. Putting water aside. Making sure we have potable water. We put the storm shutters up and were just waiting. Its the calm before the storm. Reporter speaking by phone from a southwestern opportunity island, ruiz has never endured a hurricane, let alone been directly in the path. Im hoping we will be okay because i have two daughters in philadelphia. Reporter with winds of 175 miles per hour, the category 50 storm has ripped through guadalupe and on pace to be the most catastrophic in the islands history. The lights going on and off. Reporter visiting her friend, she calls her family in puerto rico. Now that im here, i think about it and i would rather be home with my family. As the city gears up for the annual puerto ricoenday parade, they are ramping up efforts to help loved ones back home. Originally we thought the support regarding the damage that irma left behind. But now its going to be irma and maria. Reporter meaning those ruiz are left bracing for the worst. Its getting worse for me and were just anticipating the evening and Early Morning and just to be inside for quite a while. Reporter now ruiz has been texting with me and said within the last hour the power has been going on and off. A clear sign that maria is heading their way.
