Display than right here in naples florida. The winds of Hurricane Irma stronger than they were nowhere than here yesterday. We peaked at a wind gust of 142 miles an hour. But incredibly most of the damage is elsewhere in this state. Yes, the power is out, the trees as you see are down but the scars that you mentioned at least here are largely superficial. It was the worst storm that we stayed for. We were here for andrew in 92 and we were here for charlie in 2004. Reporter clay cohn spent much of today cleaning up outside of a house that just yesterday he was fairly certain he wouldnt have anymore. He and his family rode out irma at a nearby friends house fearful of the storm surge that gratefully never came. This is the storm, the behind my screenism Marilyn Gorman chose to ride it out in here house. She, too, is relieved today. God be with us. I thought we were all going to die actually. I thought the storm surge was going to come in and take us out. Reporter naples was also larged spared from widespread destruction. Despite the most ferocious winds that irma delivered gusts here above 140 miles an hour, much of the damage is limited to flooded roads and downed trees. Most of the homes and buildings held up. And thats largely thanks to stringent building codes. Where there was the rare combination of old trees and older buildings there was a different result. This is whats known as a banion tree famous in this part of florida because some have stood for centuries. This one clearly did not survive irma and as a result neither did this building. Today despite the eerie sunshine, all of southwest florida is in the dark. Millions of homes that Florida Power and light says could take a historically long time to get back online. Doing so could require the rebuilding of the entire electrical grid on the states west coast. Still, as mr. Cohn put it. We have homes to come home to for the most part. This seems to be mostly a pruning of our landscape. Well have to start all over with brand new trees and bushes but thats okay given the alternative. Reporter given the alternative of course. Everyone here is very, very surprised at what weve seen given the intensity of what we all experienced yesterday as you look live at just one of so many streets in naples, florida, that looked just like this filled with downed trees. But as i mentioned people here know it could have been so much worse. They also know perhaps that the worst is ahead here in the city where its not clear when power might be restored an effort that could take weeks. The water is also off. Its not clear when that might come back and for many here the hardest part might be yet to come, jim. We are live in naples, florida, brian taff channel6 action news. Brian, thank you so much. Lets go to cecily tynan and accuweather. Cecily, irma now a Tropical Storm but for folks in places like georgia and South Carolina, will they be making a mistake if they thought irma was no longer dangerous. Thats right, jim. That is really based on the wind. The winds have decreased now that its inland but if you look at the radar you can see this is still a very large storm. The rain shield is about 700 miles apart and across. Its pulling in a tremendous amount of moisture. The rain has left jacksonville but now they have flash flood emergencies in charleston, South Carolina with rescues going on right now. That Tropical Storm will continue to push to the northwest. As it does it loses its source of power. So it will be weakening to a tropical depression a remnant he lo but then we begin to feel the effects of irma as we head through the second half of the week. Ill have details on that. Also we have hurricane jose swirling in the atlantic. The latest on that storm in the sevenday forecast. Jim. Cecily thank you. Action cam taking a look along 30th street station earlier today where we had blue skies and sunshine but now the sky is overcast. Live on sky6 taking a look at the Commodore Barry bridge still getting filtered sunshine but the clouds are beginning to roll in. The clouds will thicken as we head through the week. The accuweather highlights will show our weather will be changing by the middle of the week. Well be feeling the humidity actually the effects of irma the middle of the week right into the weekend, the threat of showers and then we still have hurricane jose spinning in the atlantic. Thats something ill continue to track. Right now though pretty comfortable out there. Philadelphia 75, allentown 76. Cape may 69 degrees. And wilmington currently 73 degrees. So, right now satellite6 and action radar showing the High Pressure over us. This is what brought us the comfortable weather right through the weekend. Its also what is helping keep Hurricane Irma or actually now Tropical Storm irma away from us. Its being deflected to the northwest and you can see that circulation still a lot of rain with a system, maximum sustained down to 50 miles per hour, the center of circulation is southern georgia so that rain is pulling out of jacksonville, tremendous storm surge and heavy rain in charleston dealing with a lot of flooding. That system will push to the northwest and continue to weaken. Back at home partly cloudy comfortably cool another great night for sleeping, 59 in philadelphia, allentown 52, wilmington 56 and cape may 59. As we head through the day tomorrow, High Pressure over us but we will begin to see more high thin clouds thanks to irma as we head through the day again, low humidity with a high of 80 but then as we head into wednesday, this is when we get a warm front from irma. You will feel the difference in the air mass. It gets a lot more humid. Mostly cloudy with a shower or two and we keep that humidity right through the week into the weekend with a threat of some showers. In the meantime hurricane jose, north of the turks and caicos islands, not very organized. Its decreased to a cat one hurricane and this will continue to kind of meander out there. Actually its a cat two now. It will decrease to a cat one and if you look at the spaghetti plots, this is right into next week. A lot of possibilities. Will it head through the bahamas towards florida . Will it head toward the midatlantic . At at this point too early to tell. Its no imminent threat to land. Its going to meander out there for awhile. This is something we have plenty of time to track. So, back at home, the exclusive accuweather 7day forecast, tomorrow pretty nice day t low humidity, seasonable with a high of 80 degrees. High clouds through the day especially south of philadelphia. Wednesday is when that tropical air mass moves in. Its very humid, a shower or two, 77 degrees. Thursday partly sunny, humid again an isolated shower, 78. And we keep that air mass friday, some showers for the temple game, 78 degrees. Still a threat of some showers on saturday but second half of the weekend i think we begin to dry out, mixture of clouds and sunshine, 79 and monday partly sunny with a high of 79 degrees.
