Sports director, ducis rogers sat down with head coach jeff cullen. Reporter welcome to another addition of temple football playbook along coach jeff cullen. Coach the Season Opener did not go the way you expected, you lose at notre dame. We started a lot crowning guys on defense young guys on defense, some first year starters. The really good players we had got us early. We misfit runs we did in the first quarter. We got them settled down, second quarter, third quarter, nine minutes into the 4th quarter there was good football being played both sides of the ball. All summer you were focused on this game. Now you have to focus on villanova next week. How do you get past the loss. Reporter it was never about notre dame it was about us, how we prepare, how we work, the things we use, the fundamentals we use, thats the focus in everything we do always helps. We respect every opponent and get ready for the neck next game. We spoke to your players ready to move on. It was embarrassing what happened saturday were coming in watching film and get more details and we should be good. As bad as the game looked last week where is the confidence level. We came out and competed deterrently at a high level. You mentioned about defense, notre dame racked up 600 yards total offense, i know youre a defensive minded coach that had to hurt a little bit. It did, over80 of their yard an age yardage came with 17 plays. We have to fix that, in the same plays that hurt us in the 4th quarter and you watch the second and the third and the beginning of the 4th. Kids were listening once they settled into the game it was a pretty good result. Lets here from the defensive players. Its little stuff, we have to get back to our brand of football, temple football. Were definitely looking forward to saturday getting out there and show what we can do how good the defense is. Last week was a big step for us, i know we lost, but there were a lot of inexperienced guys including myself that got the first chance to play. Getting the first game out of the way and the jitters out of the of the way getting back to winning the game. Even though you were getting beat you guys played tough. Reporter mike jones had the interception that almost went for a pick 6. Next series, sharif causes a fumble. Those kinds of things they fought until the end. As you watch for lapses of effort didnt see that one bit. The effort was there and i was proud of the guys the way they played. One thing the coach that is done gotten to temple keeping the team tough minded. Reporter since taking the head coach job in december, coach collins has made his presence know. Tough mindedness you see it in the field and practice and in the facility. Lets say he is one who practices what he preachers. Bring it. Tag it and go. Lets go in practice im high energy im intense im flying around, im making sure everybody is performed at a high level and everything is having energy and juice. Its crazy, its very like exhausting you run everywhere, its very different like everyone is practicing at once. Going into this is different its very fast paced, a lot of people are involved with these kinds of practices. Its not just one or two, its everybody. Reporter one thing is clear, coach collins is a players coach. He knows how to switch it on and off. When he speaks you listen to him. He gives you advice, you want to take what he says to heart, he has your best interest in mind. If youve done something wrong, he is honest his connection with the players the respect we have for him and the respect he has for us is amazing. It will go far for the season. The thing im most excited is walking out the locker room with them. Its me being around them and walking out with them going to play whoever it is, im going to be with ply guys taking to the field to play a Football Game it doesnt get more special than that. Weve been saying mayhem is coming, today its arrives in philadelphia. For temple football playbook, im morgan as i back to you. Looking at the quarterback, he is going to be the quarterback for villanova. Absolutely, he changed the cadence of the game. He was bringing unique blitzes and get the protection set and get the ball released. I was proud of him for that. With logan he did not turn the ball over. Reporter that was a positive we didnt get enough on defense, but we only gave up one, it happened to be on a forced down stop. I was proud of ball security. Lets hear from the temple crowning quarterback logan. It felt good to play, i have great guys around me to rally behind. Offensively we performed well. We have to be better as a team going into next week. Stick around well talk about villanovas opponent a tough opponent last week we got cheese steaks for coach collins this weekend its he had ed foley, stick around for that. Health, is having the freedom to do what you want to do with your life, every single day. So at aetna, we promise to keep finding new ways to join you so nothing gets in your way. Because no matter where it is youre going, or whatever stage of life youre in. We believe that when it comes to health. You dont join us. We join you. Were back on temple football playbook alongside coach collins, im ducis rogers. You have villanova an spf team, their top ten ranked in the spf. How dangerous are they . Reporter you turn on the tape you know they are a good opponent. The quarterback is a lefty. Play makers all over the field, big offensive line. They do things we might not see the rest of the season, our unique blitz packages an unique coverage in front. The secondary they have good players, probably one of the best safeties in the country, number four. We have a healthy respect for them. Our players the second the game was over, notre dame, leon johnson came up to me he said villanova. This is the home opener, what kind of at do you expect down there. Reporter first time ive been to an eagles game, im excited about itment i heard about the fly in where we come into the stadium, the fans are there, the bands im excited for them, to be around them in the host stadium. Last week we took a ride to get cheese steaks this week we go with coach ed foley. Are you ready . Ready. Nothing wrong with that, terrific. Youve been here under four different administrations thats hard to do are you that likeable a guy . Absolutely not. I love it here, i definitely wouldnt want to go anywhere else. You cant get a good cheese steak anywhere else, either. You can actually have future meat in a cheese steak. If you cant get the full flavor of the cheese and the bread then its hard. The best thing about philadelphia no matter what sandwich you get is the bread, which we all know. I feel like were writing the Ten Commandments of cheese steak today. I got my family, and my food, i got my football football. Thats be makes the pick everyday. Seeing that stuff makes me hungry. As the new coach they bring in a new staff. Ed foley is a holdover you kept him why. I was able to to be here for the bowl prep i heard what a good coach he was and great recruiter, it was obviously he needed to be on the staff for could not could not he is a great edition to the staff. They brought continuity to frome Coaching Staff to the new one. What kind of personality does he have . He is temple tough, jersey tough, works hard, coaches the kids hard, but loves them harder.
