Hes set to hold a News Conference this morning a week after revealing he has cancer. Abc news chief White House CorrespondentJonathan Karl joins us from the Carter Center in atlanta. Jon. Carter and his wife rosalynn married for 69 years have dedicated the last three decades to humanitarian work around the globe through the Carter Center. The deeply religious former president told george last month, he is ready for the next chapter. You know, you recently said that you and rosalynn are prepared in a religious and psychological way for what comes next. Thats true. Im not eager to get there. Im just as active as i was 25, 30 years ago. Ill be 91 in october. Did all my travel capability and my physical stuff will die down and have more time with rosalynn at home. Reporter carter plans to Teach Sunday School at his Hometown Church in plains, georgia, this weekend and he recently told the head of habitat for humanity he plans to go forward and continue on with a trip to nepal in november despite this diagnosis. George. Mr. Optimistic. Okay, jon karl, thanks very much. More from dr. Richard besser right now. So jimmy carter 90 years old otherwise in pretty good health besides the cancer. What are his options at this point . I dont think hes going to be limited so much by being 90 years old by what type of cancer it is. That will determine a lot. Is it pan kri pancreatic cancern or liver his father and three siblings all died from pancreatic cancer. I think thats probably the most likely because of that. Rich besser, thanks very much. Robin back with a story that embodies that spirit. One of the hurricanes survivors speaking out for the very first time. Her name is Diane Brugger from my hometown of Pass Christian, mississippi, about an hours drive east of where we are here in new orleans. Mississippi is actually where the eye of the storm made landfall. The entire Gulf Coast Region felt the impact of the most destructive storm any of them had ever seen. We have met many heroes while covering Hurricane Katrina. From the mississippi man who risked his life pulling more than a dozen strangers to safety in his tiny boat. I had to do something. I wasnt going to leave them there. Reporter to celebrities who helped the region regain its glory. We love our culture and we will always fight to keep what makes new orleans great alive. I think keeping those memories and those visions close to your heart is what makes you feel like youre playing for a lot more than just to win a football game. Reporter the survivors of katrina all have dramatic stories. The things that happened from the hurricane has made me stronger. Reporter but it was this woman who honored us with her trust by opening up for the first time with a harrowing tale that took ten years to tell. We saw the water coming, the cars and floating and everything and the water was almost up to scenic drive and it was like, oh, this is serious. Reporter diane and tony brugger did not evacuate from harbor oaks the iphone they restored in my hometown of Pass Christian, mississippi. As the waters continued to rise tornadoes touched down. One of which hit the bruggers home full on. We were sitting in sitting in the bed and the dogs were just going crazy and the house, youd feel it sort of, you know, like a lift up like a boat and then settle back and lift up like a boat and we just looked at each other and i saw a weird acceptance in his eyes that really a nerve in me where he almost was acknowledging that this was it and i didnt understand i understood it but i didnt accept it and but we said nothing. Y we just held hands and looked at each and then when the house went oop, it didnt quite go back down the way it was supposed to and we all got up and thats when the walls fell away, when the ceiling came down. And then it just covered him. The house literally just started breaking apart. It just started flattened out until it was a field of debris. Tony was when a part of the krieling came down it caught his head and just took him right under. Reporter somehow diane survived. The only thing i remember is the trees, there were two together and i had a foot in one and a foot in the other tree. It was all just hang on reporter she clung to the tree limbs for six hours until the Violent Storm subsided and she was rescued. Having lost the love of her life, her home and her community, diane drew upon tremendous inner strength to return to face the devastation and rebuild and the very place where ten years ago katrina took it all away. To wake up every morning, to look out at that harbor, being on that little front porch, its a lovely place to live. It certainly is and thats a question a lot of people are asked, so why do you live there on the gulf coast . Up next in our heat index, actress Shannen Doherty revealing she is battling Breast Cancer and the former Beverly Hills 90210 star blaming her managers claiming they didnt pay her Health Insurance and insisting a lapse in coverage kept her from seeing doctors. I reporter this morning, actress Shannen Doherty making headlines for her reallife health scare turned bitter lawsuit. What does it feel like . Like a hard little lump. Reporter the 90210 revealing she has invasive Breast Cancer that spread to at least one lymph node during a period of time she says she was unknowingly uninsured and her Business Manager is to blame. The lawsuit filed against Business Management firm Tanner Mainstain says they failed to pay the invoice for her Health Insurance which she had through the screen actors guild. She couldnt get insurance until the 2015 enrollment opened after which she did go to the doctor and found out that she had Breast Cancer and that it had spread during last year when she was uninsured. Reporter the lawsuit also claiming had she been insured and able to visit her doctor the cancer could potentially have been stopped, thus obviating the need for future treatment including mastectomy and chemotherapy that plaintiff will likely have to suffer through now. I think the biggest challenge shannen will have in this lawsuit is linking her cancer, her need for treatment, any claims of delayed treatment to the actions of her Business Managers with respect to these insurance payments. Reporter in a statement to abc news Tanner Mainstain says while the company is saddened to learn that miss doherty is suffering from cancer, the claim that Tanner Mainstain caused her to be uninsured, prevented her from seeking medical care or somehow contributed to her cancer is patently false. Overnight the actress attorney telling us trust was violated here and we hope that the defendants will correct it in a responsible manner. For good morning america, juju chang, abc news, new york. Juju, thank you. Abcs dan abrams joins us now. Dan, what do you make of this lawsuit . Look, we all feel for Shannen Doherty. But the notion that somehow the fact that her health care, she says, wasnt being paid led her not to go to the doctor and, therefore, shes holding them responsible, very, very tough legally to do. Now, we dont even know if theyre going to concede that they were responsible for paying this. Theres a lot of questions that still need to be answered but even if you assume everything shes saying is true which is they were supposed to pay it, they didnt pay it, as a result, i wasnt able to get back enrolled until 2015, even if all of that is true, it still is really hard to link legally her cancer the advanced stage of her cancer. Exactly with their actions. Is this arrangement typical in hollywood where you have Money Managers dealing with insurance . You know, you also have lawyers, Money Managers, if youre a successful actor in hollywood, you tend to get a terrible deal when you do these sorts of arrangements. Now, some of the lawyers out there and managers will disagree with me but tends to be a terrible deal which is they take a cut of all your money and they say youll handle this for me and handle that for me when if you got people to do it individually it would be a lot cheaper but this is a very typical relationship that you see with successful actors and actresses in hollywood, but the question becomes exactly what were think expected to do . What was their job . And the problem is a lot of the time its not laid out in writing. It just becomes a kind of agreement which says, ill give you 5 and youll handle a lot of my stuff. Right. And the question is going to be, was this specifically articulated as one of the items that they were supposed to handle and did they not do it . Well be watching it. I know you will, dan. Back over to george. Stress rescue time and this morning well take a look at how stress spreads. We know how anxiety can go up when youre with someone thats stressed. Stress can actually be contagious, researchers say. Mara schiavocampo explains. Relax dont do it reporter weve all heard of yawns being contagious but what about stress . Can a stressed office mate, spouse or complete stranger actually be stressing you out . Researchers say, yes. A team at st. Louis university finding that a stranger just observing someone in a stressful situation you accuse me of stealing of gift cards. Reporter had elevated heart rates age cortisol levels. You can see list sit them by sitting and watching someone else under stress. Reporter researchers say stress is passed on through things like facial expression, voice frequency, odor and touch and just watching these stressful signs our own bodies release the stress hormone cortisol and studies have found youre four times more likely to catch stress from someone you know. Last year i sat down with researchers at u. C. San francisco studying the effect a mothers stress had on her child. The mothers had to give an impromptu speech while they scowled critically. You can hear the voice shake. Reporter their children played happily in another room and when reunited with mom, all of the babies of stressed mothers had an equally elevated heart rate. They had caught their mothers stress. Heres the babys little heart rate. Reporter we did our own unscientific test using fitbits to monitor heart rates of cups putting one on the spot while the other looked on. If you can count backwards from 997,000 in increments of eight. Oh, my god. Reporter as our subjects squirmed so did their significant other. I think my stress level was going through the roof. Reporter in fact, this womans heartbeat rose by 12 beats as she watched her husband struggle even offering to take the reins. But experts say the worst thing we can do is try to hide our stress. It doesnt work and keeps others from being able to support us. For good morning america, mara schiavocampo, abc news, new york. Thanks to mara for that. Dr. Richard besser here right now. My wife will tell you if youre in a traffic jam with me it proves this is true. Well run a more scientific well show a demonstration. We dont know if the reason you get stressed is something called mirror neurons, neurons in your brain that are triggered by someone elses stress or that sense of empathy but want to show a demonstration with heather. Heather is hooked up to all kinds of monitor, heart rate monster, something for respiration on her hands and measuring sweat and facial movement and shes been looking at stressful situations that dont involve her. They involve other people so theres someone on a roller coaster, a baby crying and a couple fighting and were monitoring all of those vital signs while shes going through this but earlier this morning we did the same thing, we had Stefanie Preston a stress researchers at the university of michigan do these measurements and let me show you what one of the images we got of her printouts here and what you see here, this here is facial movements and she was looking at a child crying and the subtle facial movements were picked up here. This here is the sweat at the level of her hand and showed she was feeling stress there and her heart rate went from 60 to 90 beats a minute just from watching that in were you aware these things were happening . I felt a little nervous, yeah, and i have a 6monthold at home so i think that made the baby crying a little bit more personal. Just brings it all out in you and this proves it right here. Thank you, both. Now outside to ginger. Oh, lets get out here to a great group. Thats Tropical Storm danny moving to the west at 10 Miles Per Hour, max sustained winds at 50 Miles Per Hour.
