Escaping to freedom through a covert tunnel nearly a mile long that connects to this house. Hes been notorious for his use of tunnels. The cartel has a team of engineers and miners that has built 100 tunnels between the u. S. And mexico. Reporter el chapo is the leader of the sinaloa mexican drug cartel, thought to be responsible for a quarter of the drugs here in the u. S. , marijuana, cocaine, heroin, meth. Law enforcement sources say tens of thousands have died in the u. S. And mexico because of him, through overdoses and associated murders. Chapo guzman is like the Osama Bin Laden of Drug Trafficking. Reporter el chapo and other cartel leaders have made their organizations multibillion dollar conglomerates using boats, submarines, airplanes and trucks to smuggle their illegal product. I saw it firsthand at this southwest border checkpoint. This truck of furniture was actually hiding more than a ton of marijuana. There is so much drug traffic coming from mexican cartels, it has to be destroyed at secret locations like this. El chapo is so rich he made the Forbes Magazine billionaire list. Celebrated in mexico in music and on videos, he has been indicted in the u. S. On federal Drug Trafficking charges. This is a huge failure. Hes one of the most powerful Drug Cartel Leaders in mexico if not the most powerful. He will no doubt be wanted in the u. S. As well. What are authorities doing tonight . Theyre deeply concerned. El chapos escape raises questions about corruption in the prison and in mexicos law enforcement. U. S. Authorities will be checking leads because they want him back behind bars now.
