World War II veteran Howard Chamberlain, 99, of Waimate, dies

Surgeons then wanted to amputate Chamberlain’s arm.

“I managed to talk them down,” Chamberlain said in the interview.
“They said it will be no good for you.”
Back in New Zealand Chamberlain did not allow his war injuries to hold him back. He married, became a champion cyclist winning the Timaru to Christchurch classic and farmed just outside Waimate.
“You can’t really imagine what he went through,” Ken Chamberlain said.
“Occasionally he talked about it and opened up a bit more after the article in the paper [
The Timaru Herald] this year.”
Chamberlain’s right arm was of little help to him for farm work. His son said he just got on and did what was required.
