A few days ago, an international news magazine launched its May 1 edition with a cover of a radar image of Taiwan and the headline, “The Most Dangerous Place on Earth.” Certainly dramatic, perhaps hyperbolic, but one meant to grab the reader’s attention as the three countries involved — Taiwan, China, and the United States — decide what to do with an issue that’s been with us for more than 70 years.
