There is an effort to bring text 911 service to new york city. While there are some people who question how effective the service would be, its been fairly successful elsewhere. As Stacey Delikat shows us, it might give some people a way to get help when a phone call isnt possible. Watch this. Reporter were trained to call 911 in the event after than emergency. Now, in more than 350 cities across 25 states, you can text 911 for help. It can be an appropriate lifeline. Someone is in a dangerous situation where they cant communicate. Maybe theres a burglar in the house or some type of situation of that nature. Reporter this is the director of the 911 center of Monroe County in upstate new york, which implemented the text system two years ago. He says it has mostly been used by members of the Deaf Community but in situations where the person didnt want anyone to know they were contacting authorities. We had a person witnessing a drug transaction. They were worried it was going bad and one person might shoot the other. They texted 911 with the information. Some lawmakers want to speed up the process and have introduced legislation in the city council requiring the city to come up with a plan for socalled next generation 911 within a year.
