You can see the ambulances and police. Its an incredible scene. So many buildings on lockdown. Streets on lockdown. A massive response, massive scene out there. This is a developing story. Well bring the latest details back to you. Christina lidia curanaj, thank update. Now to our featured story on the revelations of bad working conditions at amazon. Its raising questions about the culture at big retailers and businesses that emphasize delivery and prices at low prices. Linda schmidt has a look. The scathing article portrays in some cases an inhumane work culture at amazon. Workers at the retailer encouraged to rat out one another to their bosses, tear apart one anothers ideas in meetings, work weekends. Adrian is with crains new york business. They feel the pressure to satisfy shoppers and investors. The shopping population and other competitors who say well get it cheaper or faster to that same population, and investors, are also driving it because they want higher sales, more profits. If the culture does exist at amazon, part of the reason is customers wanting products cheaper and faster, plus she says management from the top down can create a hostile work environment. I think its a combination of the view from the top, the middle management and the demand from customers who want their items, the elsa doll, delivered in time for christmas, and those factors are contributing to what can be a detrimental workplace. Reporter amazon is feeling pressure from jet. Com, a retailer that launched this summer. Its facing a lot more retail competitors than in any other time. So its hard to stay no. 1. This professor says amazon is a success story. Hes a business professor at Baruch College in the city. He believes the cases of alleged abuse and overworking employees are exceptions at the company, not the rule. If you had a very high turnover because its an unhappy organization, you would fall apart. That is not the case. People are staying there. The organization is expanding. Every year it gets bigger. Reporter the founder and ceo of amazon responded to the New York Times article by sending a memo to employees saying, quote, the article doesnt describe the amazon i know. And that anyone who witnesses abusive behavior should report it to Human Resources or him saying our tolerance for any zero. Christina lots to talk about. Patricia starke is here to talk about and scott gamm from the street. Com. Lets talk about this. Corporate communications. Information at different companies. Lets start with you. What strikes you about the article . I think its definitely focusing on the negative aspects of extreme Corporate Culture. I think its one of those things where thats why its so important when you interview for a job, you should interview them and make sure that culture is right for you. Christina companies have to be smarter, faster, cheaper with prices. Scott, things didnt happen overnight for you, coming up through the ranks. Yeah. Christina never an easy ride. Never. I think the new york city could have interviewed as many people experiences. When you string together negative stories it sounds like amazon, what are they doing . They eclipsed walmart as the no. 1 retailer. 230 billion versus walmarts 215 billion. This just happened. Certainly working for amazon. Christina theyre kicking butt. To be at the top is never easy. You have to be its darwinian. You have to survive. Youre in college and you get the tough teacher that says look to your left, look to your right. A lot of these people wont be finishing class with you. Its like who will go the extra mile and step up to the plate and work the hardest. If thats the Corporate Culture youre getting into and thats not your personality, there wont be a match. Youll be miserable. Christina is there room for companies to be more compassionate, softer, handle employees with emotional care . I think so. We see these stories about how great it is to work at some of the Bigger Tech Companies like google, apple, facebook, where you have free lunches and your dry cleaning taken care of and child care. You would think amazon is in that category given the size and scope. You read this article and you see well maybe the perks arent there. I think the grass is always greener on the other side. If youre at one of these positions and unhappy, wed agree its time to look for something else. Look for a gig that really is in line with your values. Christina have a job in this economy, you have to be tough to survive. Definitely. Things like apple and places, those are the exceptions to the rule. Those arent the norm. In most corporations, theyre lucky if they have an awesome cafeteria. Theres not necessarily a working coffee machine. You know, its the idea of get in there. Youre young and you can really put the pedal to the metal and make your mark. It wont be easy, but it might pay off later on. If youre unhappy with the situation, that means you have situation, that means you have to change the situation. Christina do you think the customers will care . I mean, what do you think . Christina or is it the cheapest prices . Its about prices. People like to order from amazon and get it instantly or within the next day that amazon prime, two days of free shipping. Its bad press for them, but will the customers mind . I dont think so. I dont think people want to get products from somebody who is running a sweat shop or having child labor or doing horrible, terrible things. But ultimately i think that if its status quo and people are getting what they need and theyre getting cheap prices and good products. Thats what most consumers are looking for. Joining us. Russ the court asked the league to have the giants owner, the coowner, get involved. He is the chairman of the leagues chief executive committee. But the league said no. John was pleased it said no. Quite frankly, it shows sometimes a lack of listen, judge berman is trying to make a deal, trying to make something happen. Christina good luck with that. Russ the thing with this, its a conflict of interest. Its silly to ask him to be involved. Why . Brady is supposed to be suspended for four days. The patriots fourth game of the season is against the chief rival of the giants, the cowboys. Of course john would want tom brady to play. So it would be a conflict of interest. The league would look stupid. He would look silly. He would set himself up for nothing but criticism. It doesnt make any sense. It was a stupid gesture. Christina stupid. Russ didnt make any sense. Christina wouldnt have worked out. We wanted this to work out. It goes on and on and on. Whats happening . Russ the way im seeing it, you were asking me the other day what do i think is going to happen. And to me, its a situation that the judge is grasping at straws trying to make a settlement. I dont see a settlement happening unless brady accepts a game suspension, one or two games. So thats got to happen. Christina that would be fair, right . Russ i think it would be fair. I think he screwed up. Youve got to remember something else. The league bargained with the Players Union to have the commissioner, roger goodell, the guy in charge of calling all the shots. So they are within their legal rights. I cant see the judge overturning that. Christina strong ground there. Russ without question. Christina lets talk about wilmer flores. This is a great story.
