More than 7 million acres have burned so far with 10 fires burning in five different states. The record for acres burned in one year was 9. 8 million in 2006. A big reason why this year could surpass that, severe drought out west and storms that produce a lot of lightning and not much rain. Well, are we going to get any rain in our forecast . Audrey puente is here. A couple of places did. We had a severe thunderstorm towards Dutchess County earlier, but most of us should stay dry for the rest of the night. Lets look at the numbers. Thats the big story. The heat wave continues in central park with todays high of 90. We hit 91 at newarkliberty airport. 90 in sussex. 93 was the hotspot on the map today. Thats in poughkeepsie. 86 was the high in montauk and bridgeport 88 earlier this afternoon. Right now were sitting warm across the region. Were at 78 in montauk. 81 in islip. Its 83 in bridgeport. 90 in poughkeepsie. 88 in sussex. 87 in newark and down the shore in belmar where it was nice, the current temperature is at 82. Its all about the dew points. Thats a measure of moisture in the atmosphere. When we see readings in the 60s and 70s, it makes it feel uncomfortable. It will stay that way for the next couple of days even though our highs will be coming down into the 80s. There are the showers i talked about. We had cells come through the Hudson Valley earlier, but everyone else remained dry. We will expect increasing clouds tonight. Theyre coming in ahead of a disturbance sitting to the west here. This will keep us with a shot of isolated showers throughout the day and it looks like as we go into thursday to friday, thats when well see the approach of this cold front. Right now its bringing rain and strong storms into illinois right now heading towards indiana. It will be making its way across the Great Lakes Region and looks like it will be in our area by the end of the week. Ahead of the system, the heat and humidity continues to build. Behind the front, nice, dry and cool area is working into the Northern Plains states tomorrow. Highs in the 60s in minneapolis tomorrow. 71 for kansas city. 72 in denver. Well get a taste of drier, more comfortable air into the weekend. Our futurecast is indicating well have increasing clouds tonight. Tomorrow well wake up with lots of clouds. There could be a couple of isolated showers like this morning. In the afternoon, watch out for a scattered shower, maybe an isolated storm north and west of the city. More of the same for thursday. Lots of clouds, the sun will break through time to time and in the evening the cold front area. Late thursday into friday, well into the region. Not tonight. It will be mild and muggy with temperatures in the 70s in the city. Tomorrow, expect a mix of sun and clouds. More clouds than sun across parts of the area. It will be warm with temperatures in the 80s, slightly cooler than it was over the last few days. It stays warm and humid as we go into the end of the week. Watch out for showers and thunderstorms friday. Some could produce heavy downpours producing flooding. This weekend, a mix of sun and clouds. Theres a threat of a will be nice. Christina you know, it is going to be nice. Its also nice you did the right thing. Our parents taught us to do the right thing. Thats easier said than done. A College Professor proved it with a simple multiple choice extra credit question. Well show you next. And ditching cable isnt necessarily just for viewers. When push comes to shove, how many of us will do it ourselves . Thats an answer one College Professor has been getting for years thanks to a simple question on an exam. As jen lahmers shows us, it exposes a selfish side of people who had a chance to help everyone around them. Imagine getting this question from your professor at the end of the semester. Its a chance to get points added to your final term paper. You have two options. You can get two or six extra credit points. Heres the catch. If more than 10 percent chooses six points, no one gets anything. Reporter the professor has been doing this exercise since 2008. Only once has the class actually received the extra credit. The lesson he says, when too many people think only about themselves, everyone loses. Theres a temptation to overconsume and to think about maximizing ones own goals and not thinking necessarily about the welfare of the group. He calls it the tragedies of the commons. In the real world, you could look at it as doing the right thing. Last year honest tea put it to the test, setting up an honor system kiosk at foley square as part of a social experiment they called the honesty index. In the end, new yorkers came in third with 98 percent of people paying for drinks when they didnt have to. It made me feel very, very good about the other people and if i see somebody help the other person on the street or homeless person to get some food, its nice. Makes me feel very, very nice. Christina in new york we saw countless examples of people doing the right thing. This woman sitting down to take time with a homeless man. Another man remembering to tip. This group letting people off the subway before getting on. The list continues. I live on 14th street. Theres a homeless family down the street. My roommates and i drop off we give them luncheon the weekends and try to help them. Having proper subway etiquette, standing up, holding the door open, things that are common sense and courtesy. Reporter the results is we lead by example. When we see other people doing the right thing makes me want to do the same thing. If not something better. Reporter the other benefit of doing the right thing is here in new york city, its about the only thing you can do that wont cost you. Christina, back to you. Christina thanks a lot. You always do the right thing. Heres world renowned clinical psychologist dr. Jeff gardere. Always a pleasure. Christina people think about doing the right thing, but youre doing a good thing for yourself . Absolutely. When you go ahead and do something altruistic for the better good, people react to that. You. It produces dopamine thats good. Christina it can be addictive. [indiscernible talking over one another] why not have an addiction off doing the right thing . Christina sounds like the world would be a better way. Some of the examples cited are opening the door for someone. It is. That. Too often as new yorkers, we get a bad rap. As we saw, a good 90 percent of the people who were asked to do the right thing in new york did it. That. So i think its important to be able to demonstrate to other people just the little bit of kindness youre talking about, opening a door or standing up and allowing someone to sit down who looks tired or someone whos a senior. What that does is it shows people around you its passing it on as they say. Paying it forward. People see that and guess what . They mimic that same behavior. Thats part of being human. Christina paying it forward. Paying it forward. We have mirror neurons in the brain. When we see people behaving a certain way, we do the same thing and not think about it. Its a response. Christina thats beautiful. They even say the act of smiling, even though youre not happy, will make you feel happier yourself. Absolutely. Because when you are smiling, youre attracting more people to you. Thats why we see very young infants, the ones who get more attention are the ones who smile more. Then we talk about that smile. It will attract people. Theyre reinforced and they smile even more. Christina if someone is grumpy, we should have compassion. Its not necessarily directed at you. It might be a symptom of whats going on in their lives. Mostly if people are stressed, if theyre unhappy, theyve got financial stressors, its hard to be benevolent. Let me share a story with you. A lot of the things that i believe if you talk the talk, you better walk the walk. So my young son sebastian was really grumpy, just gave me a hard time. Why did you put the garbage can whatever . Instead of saying, listen, i went to the supermarket. I bought some lunchables and things. I said, listen, you rember how you behaved this morning and what you said to me . Well, i brought you a gift. And he smiled and he was nice for the next seven minutes and became a grump again. But it really put him in the right and thats the point. When people are not nice to us, then i really believe we should show them as much kindness as possible and we converted them. It gives us power. But it gives them happiness and theyll do it for someone else. Christina those peoplare the ones that need love the most. Thats the sign. Its not that the people are hateful or something is wrong with them. Theyre having a bad day or a bad life. Youre showing compassion and kindness and love. Thats what a lot of religions are based on. Thats what humanity is based on. Just being able to put your hand out there and helping someone come into the light. Christina dr. Jeff gardere, you put us into the light. Really hopeful. My favorite segment of the year. Thank you. Were back with a sports story that had social media buzzing today. Softball coaches making young girls intentionally lose. Up next, why they did it and the bit of karma they got back today. Cominup thursday, join us for a special look at religion. The reason they were losing the game on purpose because they didnt want central iowa to get in. Well central iowa it was the pool play. They wanted central iowa out because theyre a good team. What happened . They appealed. Central iowa, they made them play a onegame playoff. Justice was served. Because central iowa won today. To have were not talking about pros. Were talking about its the coaches. If Little League coaches are thinking this way, they shouldnt be Little League coaches. Christina is it strategy, too . Thats a hoot of hooey. Strategy, if you want to talk about major league, tell me about strategy. Not with kids. Youre teaching them everything that is wrong. Youre supposed to teach them everything that is right. Christina this time h came around. Russ surprisingly, theres a hearing tomorrow in manhattan. But Roger Goodell and tom brady had a secret meeting today. No settlements were done.
