Those two remaining tunnels have been shut or one of them has to be shut. Reporter commuters have seen what that could be like, closing individual tunnels for repairs cuts service by as much as 80 percent. My train was cancelled twice last week. Reporter after a recent delay in and out of penn station, this person writing on social media, quote, fix this mess. Its completely unacceptable. An on time train is a rarity and you still plan on hiking rates . Absurd. Ernie dan, thank you very much for that. Lets continue to talk about this important issue. Joining me is allen marcus from the marcus group, an expert in crisis management. Youre the best in the business. You know a lot that goes on in this city. You live in new jersey. You solve problems. Allen, whats the problem . Is it just money or what . The problem has been going on for years. Its a crisis of leadership, ernie. Money is a byproduct of that. New jersey transit, metro north, these agencies dont Work Together because the governors dont Work Together because they pander to voters. They do not want to raise infrastructure taxes. Theyll say well solve the do it. Ernie it goes on and on. Today, new jersey. They had a delay problem. So its every day something is going on. You talk about leadership. Why cant they get together . Whats wrong here . What are we missing . Because nobody is focusing on the root cause of the problem. The tunnels under the hudson river that deliver people from new jersey to jobs in new york every day, 165,000 of them, theyre 100 years old. Theyre breaking down. Theres no reason to believe that those tunnels can survive another 100 years. Theres not a real plan to replace them because new york has never stepped up and said we acknowledge we have to we get enriched by those workers. We have to contribute to it. The tunnel that was cancelled was a dumb tunnel. It wasnt financed properly. That doesnt mean we dont need one. What should we do . Extend the flushing line, the 7 line, under the hudson river, to the meadowlands, connect into the two transit systems, relieve congestion on the amtrak tunnels that are used by new jersey transit. Its simple stuff like that, but it takes money and it takes leadership. Ernie well, i think the keyword is leadership. The transportation secretary says this is an urgent situation. Its a top priority. We hear that. We say whos in charge . Why doesnt Somebody Just say and how did we get here . Its been a long haul. We got here because nobody wants to sit down, bite the bullet and say this is going to take 15 to 30 billion and how are we going to pay for it . Youll notice the transportation secretary said we should do this and do that, but he didnt bring a check. Ernie true. You know, theres money always available when they want to do something. Theres always money available. When you think that people they pander to it. If you said lets build a stadium, theres money all the time for that. Ernie you deal with crisis management. Do we need a crisis . Were there. What else do we need . The crisis is right around the corner. The tunnel, the amtrak tunnels have to be repaired. Theyll be out of service. You are not going to be able to move people between new york and new jersey in any convenient way very shortly. Hurricane sandy almost knocked the two tunnels out. And another kind of disaster, theyre going to come. Last week you had 90degree temperatures. You had high humidity. Electrical systems dont work under those conditions. What did we do . Tunnels. Ernie do you have any hope at all . Any hope at all . Theres hope when the crisis is there. Its like 9 11 made us security here. We need that kind of a disaster to happen to get people to move. The governors, Governor Cuomo and christie, they have to bite the bullet and exercise the leadership. They have to be prepared to spend the money. Ernie you got it. Allen marcus from the marcus group. Thanks for joining us. Come back again. These are other stories were following for you in the news. The legionnaires disease outbreak in the south bronx has claimed more lives. 10 people have died. 100 have been contracting the disease. City Health Officials claim they have it under control. They expect fewer new cases in the coming days now that cooling towers are being cleaned of the bacteria that causes the disease. Mayor de blasio has ordered all City Building owners to have their cooling towers tested and disinfected if bacteria is found or they could face criminal charges. The vast majority of buildings in new york city do not have these cooling towers. They tend to be found in bigger, more modern buildings. Ernie Governor Cuomos office has offered to help building owners by agreeing to have the state test water samples for free. The mayor has unveiled a new plan to combat the citys growing homeless population. The initiative would find longterm solutions for mentally ill people who are prone to violence. If an individual commits a crime, they will be arrested and receive services to deal with their Mental Health while in custody. The mayor hopes this will prevent innocent people from getting hurt. Listen. Nyc safe specifically focuses on people with a Mental Health challenge and a history of violence, a proven Mental Health challenge and a proven history of violence. When those two elements come together, this plan is activated. Ernie and the first lady will help run nyc safe, a 22 million effort to coordinate city agencies to handle the homeless problem. Were going to go check on the gop debate coming up tonight. Well get you a live report on that. Nick is here with the forecast and its a good one. Nick it is. I think youll be smiling for the weekend forecast. Ernie thank you very much. Join us tomorrow as we take a look at the new child care challenges facing todays parents. Fewer people are living in a 9 00 to 5 00 world and the child Care Industry has to adapt. Well take a look at the problem and the solutions tomorrow at 6 00. And were coming right back. Ernie nick is joining us now. Looking good and so is the weather. Nick we had a beautiful day, comfortable ernie cool this morning. It was nice. Nick weve been using the word comfortable lately. Were going to do it tonight, although there will be a bit more cloud cover. It might lead to a shower overnight across central and southern new jersey. We can all use a shower at some point. Yes, we can. Well have a nice forecast coming up after this storm Center Passes to the south. 83 today. 67 the low. Thats pretty close to average. Thats good. 97 the record high. 57 the record low. That was in 1994. Your sunrise, 5 58. Down at 8 06. In new york, 79. Humidity is not bad. Wind out of the north. We have a bit of the mid to high cloud cover thats coming in. The pressure is 29. 90 and is starting to fall with the storm center off to the south approaching. 82 at belmar. 82 in the city to islip. 79 bridgeport. 72 monticello. Sussex stopped at 77. We talked about how temperatures in the suburbs may not get out of the upper 70s and that was the case. 79 in town. Upper 70s towards montauk. 72 still monticello. 80 at poughkeepsie. And 75 at the jersey shore right now. A nice evening at the shore, everywhere for that matter, except for the cloud cover thats moving in. The wind, mostly northwest to northerly. Well see the wind become northeasterly as the night goes along and continuing to tomorrow. Where are the showers . A few west of philadelphia. Theyre falling apart towards harrisburg. Fox 5 sky guardian 3d shows the line down here. The heavy stuff is satisfy cross the carolinas into virginia. Notice the trajectory is off to the east. Thats why we think the city will stay dry and only that risk of a shower for central and southern new jersey. Thats later on tonight. Theres the cloud cover. Well see a fair amount of clouds tonight. Tomorrow morning, as that system moves along and stays to the south and east, well see clouds and sun combining and more sun will get going into the afternoon. Take a look at our day planner. It shows that 60s out the door in the city. 50s in the suburbs tomorrow morning. That will feel nice. 77 midday. More sun in the afternoon. With more sunshine i thought wed stop at 80, but im bumping it to the low and middle 80s. From the city northward, more in the way of sunshine and cloud that goes away. This system coming from the west falls apart. Saturday turns out to be a nice day. But around 80 or so. Then it will warm up on sunday. Again, all that moisture should fall apart and well look okay. A lot of clouds tonight. Maybe that shower threat later tonight, early tomorrow morning, central and south jersey. Otherwise, 68 in the city. 50s to lower 60s in the coolest of suburbs. Tomorrow, clouds and sun. More of the sun from midday on. 84 will be the high, upper 70s in some spots. Well be back to 84 on saturday. 82 on sunday. Nice days. The next chance of showers and storms comes in later monday at 81. And a pretty good bet for showers and storms on tuesday. That could be most of the day. Right around 80. Well be back to the lower 80s wednesday and thursday as a return of sunshine comes through. The 90 to 95 degree heat looks like its a thing of the past anytime soon. Ernie okay. Well, we like the nice weather. Nick very comfortable. Love it. Fantastic. Ernie keep it going for as long as it will last. Nick will do my best. Ernie as you know the crowded field of republican president ial candidates facing off tonight. Some have just wrapped up a debate while others are preparing in one a few hours from now. Ben is live in cleveland. Good evening to you, ben. A busy day out there and a busy night ahead, too. Reporter it certainly is. Downtown cleveland packed this afternoon. A lot of media crews from across the country, up and down the east coast as well. Were outside the quicken loans arena, the q as they call it, the home of the cavaliers where the debate will take place. For the last hour or so, seven candidates who did not qualify for the debate have taken the stage insides the arena, including former new york governor george pataki. He was on stage with those other candidates. He made the point as to why he would be a good president. He says he can bring people together because as a republican governor in a very liberal bringing folks together. They also talked about the elephant who was not in the room, at least not for that debate, over the last hour, donald trump and Carly Fiorina likened him to a flipflopper and to the clinton. I didnt get a phone call from bill clinton before i got into the race. I didnt. Maybe because i didnt donate to their campaign. I talked about donald trump from the standpoint of being an individual who was using his celebrity rather than his conservatism. How can you run for the republican nomination and be for single payer healthcare . Reporter that was Texas Governor rick perry, trying to say that donald trump is a flipflopper, hes gone back and forth on a number of issues, including healthcare. Back to you. Ernie speaking of that, what have you heard in terms of possibly how the candidates may handle the trump factor tonight . I think theyre going to have kid gloves on. Unless he goes after them. I guarantee each of the other nine candidates with him, they probably have a couple of one liners in their pocket that they can bring out should he go after them. Ernie im wondering if you heard about this. There were reports that republicans may be looking to have him say he will not run as a third party candidate. Have you heard anything more about that . Reporter you mentioned that. Form it was brought up earlier today. This is very concerning for the gop. Theyre concerned if donald trump does not ultimately get the republican nomination, he might go in as a third party candidate, be a spoiler essentially, a la a ross perot. Theyre worried because they think he would siphon more votes from the republican side than from the democratic side. They might try to lock him up on that tonight. Ernie whats the mood out there . How would you describe it . Kind of tense . Reporter i think its a tense. A lot of people have a lot on the line. This could be the most watched event in all of Cable Television history. So certainly theres a chance for a lot of these maybe second and third tier candidates to shine and take the spotlight away from donald trump. Here in cleveland, folks are excited. Its beautiful weather. A lot of security out here. I think it could be a very interesting event. Ernie a lot of people will be watching. Reporter by the way, this is the same stage where whoever gets the nomination, the Republican Convention will be held in this same arena next summer. Ernie very interesting. Thank you very much for the report. Well be watching. Thank you for joining us live from cleveland tonight. Thanks, ben. We know that people approach life very differently and thats at the very heart of my question for you tonight. Here it is. Do you think we should focus on today or the future . Which do you think is better . Ernie where is your focus . See if people agree with you in just a few minutes coming up. And were looking to the future on this program. On tuesday, well check out the retail industrys summer slump. What does it mean for you and the people whose jobs may depend on Consumer Spending . Thats coming up tuesday right here at 6 00. Stay with us. Russ will join me in a minute with some summer baseball ernie russ is here. The yankees didnt win last night, but it wasnt a total loss. Russ no, it wasnt. Bottom line is winning is what pays the bills. Well, maybe not. A lot of people lose and pay their bills in baseball. That said, the young man making his first, severino, he gave up two hits. Both were costly. One was a double off the wall that scores one run. That was an unearned run. The second one was a home run, a roughly 435, by ortiz. But other than that ernie a couple of big hiccups, but over all russ the kid went five innings. He gave up two hits. Those were the only two. He didnt walk anybody. And he struck out seven batters. So what impressed me about him, other than, you know, not getting too technical now, overthrowing a little bit at the beginning, he looked very poised. He looked like he belonged. He didnt look like a fish out of water. Ernie girardi likes him. Hes here to stay . Russ girardi said prior to the game hes in the rotation prior to last night, win or lose, good or bad performance. Not only is he in and staying, but they need him. Their pitching staff is a big question mark. I mean, he was in there last night because pineda is hurt. They need him. Ernie lets go to the mets. They went to six. Russ they went to six last night. Lets say this. They won 86. That was all fine and dandy. However, they made everybody a nervous wreck. Youre taking a look at matt harvey, who was brilliant. He went seven innings, gave up two hits, no walks, no runs, leaves after seven innings. They were leading 8nothing going into the 9th inning. The tying run came to the base with the score 86 and two men on. Fortunately they got the final out. As you can say, alls well that ends well. As i was saying at 10 00, let us not forget these are the mets. They will give us a little had they lost, they would have needed a straight jacket and ambulance to take Terry Collins and matt harvey out of the ballpark. Ernie heres the question. Do you live in the moment or do you plan ahead . What should you be focused on . I hit the streets and got very interesting answers, c do you want to know how hard it can be to breathe with copd . It can feel like this. Copd includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Spiriva is a oncedaily inhaled copd maintenance treatment that helps open my airways for a full 24 hours. Spiriva helps me breathe easier. Spiriva respimat does not replace rescue inhalers for sudden symptoms. Now open in the pocono mountains. Book now at kalahariresorts. Com ernie tell me what you think. Should we focus on today or the future . Future. Ernie the future . Why . Because todays already set. But the future is up in the air. Im always thinking ahead and trying to plan out five to 10 years. Ernie good plans . I hope so. Hopefully they work out. Ernie im still asking my question about today or the future. What do you think . The future. Ernie why . Just planning for my childrens education and thinking ahead in terms of economics and things. Ernie how many children do you have . Four boys. Ernie so youre thinking about them a lot. Yes. Today is important and to a great extent it determines the future. Ernie enjoy the day. You enjoy today, but also keep in mind the future. The future. Ernie why . Because i know what im doing today. The whole business about living in the present. So if you put the question that way, i would say today. Be where i am today. Ernie live in the present. Live in the present. Im 76. So my thinking is today is what ive got because i dont know how many more future days. Ernie we hope you have a lot of good future days. Enjoy every day. Thank you. Ernie bye. A little bit of both, right . Keep a little balance going there. Thats it for now. Thank you for joining us.
