In new york, they came and they went. It was kind of routine. I heard it only cost 15 to take a helicopter from the panam building to jfk. Wow. I cant even imagine that. You cant even get a taxi to go from 75th to 86th street for 15. [laughter] that was cool. They dont do it anymore. Lets take one more look at it, there it is. No more helicopters. Hey, its safer not only for the people in the helicopters, but on the ground. We dont do it. Beautiful, beautiful day. All right. So we are thrilled that victor espy victor espinoza, the jockey, lets go through it. Videotape. The horse won thanks to victor espinoza, i think. That horse and victor are unstoppable. They won at haskell. Let me tell you something, they brought out record crowds to monmouth, record crowds. And everybodys wondering, what is going to happen . Because this horse could retire right now, very happy and healthy horse. There he is, number two, but hes going to come on in, sir. But hes doing that on purpose. Here he comes, he starts to lead. Come on in, victor. How are you, guys . Wow. The man of the hour is having a seat on our couch, the man of the month, the man of the year. Everybodys talking about victor espinoza. Nice to have you here. Thanks for having me here. We also have, not brandon snyder, but this fine gentleman whose name escapes me. [inaudible] costello. Nice to see you. You guys have a great auction and, by the way, congratulations on what happened yesterday. Thank you. Was that a hard race or did you just breeze through that race . That was easy. Can we show the race . Were going to watch the race together. Okay. Id love to know what youre feeling, your emotions. You come out, youre kind of in second place. Yeah. You see it, i was just trying to go in the front. Number 2, he decided to take my place, so i dont want to go, you know, like close together because the horses take a lot of energy, so i decide to, like, sit back a little bit right there. And the other horse, he attacked me too. He did . [laughter] see that in the turn . Yeah. What were you thinking in your mind . Im going to show them . I was, like, im going to just put him away and move forward just a little bit, because i dont want to be in between the horses. Thats what happened. But he tried to chase me, the gray horse, outside. But he cant keep up with American Pharoah. How hard is it for you, physically, this ride . What are you how much effort physically do you have to expend . A lot. The hardest part is just coming out of the gate and hitting that first turn. And as soon as i get my place in first turn, it was great. Now right here you see it right there in the back side, it was just right there, my job is easy now. Im having fun. Now i was having fun. [laughter] this is a fun time now. Yeah, i was cruise anything there. When yo dow say ive got to when do you say identify got to put a little more juice just a little bit before the threeeighths, i just loose reason up just a little bit because i dont want to take him out of the race too much. Right now he was doing it all by his own. Do you think think about saying anything to the other jockeys like whos your daddy . Youre a gentleman. Do you say that stuff . You know what . I dont tell them, but deep inside of me [laughter] here you go, youve got it made. Do you know this guys gaining on you at the end . Watch this. Yeah. The other jockey was riding so hard to catch up with me, and i was telling him, do you, like, realize i was just watching tv and youre working really hard . [laughter] well, seriously, congratulations on this and Everything Else this year. How does it feel . Its incredible feeling to be in this position and in this situation that im at right now and be able to win the triple crown, nobodys done it for so many years, and i was close twice. But now the third time, you know, finally i got it done. Its just an amazing raid. Everybody says American Pharoah is up stoppable. I mean, he could go and relax and make babies, right, right now, but are you thinking about doing the Saratoga Race . Whats next . I wish. I really dont know how, where its going to be his next race. Trainer, you know . Its going to be after the trainer and all up to the trainer and see if American Pharoah come out good. So you dont know yet. Folks, by the way, if you werent at the race, you can own a piece of it somehow. Thats how Steiner Sports fits mr. Costello, what do you have there, please . This is kind of a poster, you know, of the triple crown of the Belmont Stakes and shows the triple crown winner, and then if you see basically can that yeah, hold it up. It looks nice. Well, we tried to do at steiner is put moments into memories, so you can get items autographed by the jockey how about this one over here, lets take a look at this big one over here. How much are we looking at . Is this something we can bid on or just buy it . Go on steinersports online, and you can see the whole collection from American Pharoah, go online, purchase, and that actually shows moments from all three legs of the triple crown is this victors whip . It is not but its his signature. [laughter] its his brothers whip. [laughter] all right. Steiner. Com . Steinersports. Com. Steinersports. Com. And also you can get actual dirt from belmont park. You can get dirt from the track. So, victor, this is good for you, right . You get a few extra bucks out of the auction maybe . Yeah, but let me tell you, its a lot of work. What do you do when its not race day . Whats your day like . Very busy. I think i have more things to do when im not riding, because when i ride, i know my job is just riding horses. When im off, i dont know what im going to do. So many things that i do. I work out a lot, and right now im just, you know, a doing a lot of Different Things because i guess everybody want to, you know, like probably like you guys, curious how it feels to win the triple crown, right . Of course were curious. [laughter] im also curious about what you eat every day, because a jockey really has to watch their weight. Yeah, thats the hard part. Thats why i never liked to be a jockey, never liked my job because the discipline that you have of to have, and the diet jockey. Give us an idea of what you eat a day. I take a lot of different diets, i never work out before. I eat pretty much everything, but just a little bit. Not that much. What do you weigh . Like 112. And youre how tall . 51. When did you start riding horses . Went i was probably, like, 5 years old. [laughter] but professional when i was 16. And also i not supposed to, like, ride like professional until youre 17, but somehow, like, you know, probably they feel bad for me that i really want to be a jockey. But not just because i love it, its just because i want to, like, you know, have a lot of fun things and make money. I hear ya. Survive, you know . And so finally i, they decide to give me a jockeys license when i was 16. So where do you live these days . I live in san diego in summertime and then winter time i live in l. A. Well, listen, we are never going to know what its like to ride a horse in the Kentucky Derby or the Belmont Stakes, but we do have an idea we want the run by you, okay . Sure. [laughter] a couple months ago, do you know who nacho is, the poloplaying yes. He actually played polo with us, hipty hop horses. We have a stable of these, and i was just wondering if youd like to have a quick race on a hippity hop horse from that end of the room to that end of the room. That would be fun. Youre not racing anytime soon, right . Wednesday. Wednesday . Where . In san diego. So thisll be a nice warmup. You ready . All right, lets hit the starting gate, okay . Okay, you got it. Victor hey, one thing that i read about you, sir, you were able to stay focused. You knew the whole world was looking at you at belmont, but you kind of put that successfully out of your mind, right. Yes. Any particular technique or trick or meditation that you engage in . I cant tell you right now, because you are my enemy [laughter] im his enemy you dont want to give people why you take the pink one . You want the pink one . [laughter] no. [laughter] ive done this before. Can i do side saddle . This is funny you ready for this . Yeah. All right. Dont get hurt, victor. I try not to. All right. I guess we dont have a starting gate, so its going to be on your mark do you practice . Get set, go [laughter] go, victor, go, victor [laughter] looking good. Oh [laughter] victor won [laughter] [laughter] you lost your microphone. Appropriate. Thank you. Congratulations, he really is good on any kind of horse. Hes light on his feet. I hate this horse. That was my workout. It looked like American Pharoah. Thank you for doing that. Are you okay . Nothings hurt, broken . Wednesday . 100 . By the way, your plans on racing, youre going to keep going even after pharoah decides to call it quits . Yep. I have to just consider my job and try to beat everybody. Including me. Including him. You cant beat triple crown winner. [laughter] the best jockey won. Thank you. How can we find out about the memorabilia . Steinersports. Com, you can see the whole collection and items signed by victor espinoza. Lets put this up for bid too. Can you sign that . That will be a legendary artifact. Ill get a pen. Steve, give our best to brandon, we hope he feels better. Mike, what do you think . I liked the race, the race is good. And so greg, the sore loser [laughter] i blame the horse. Nice job, victor. Exactly. All right, good morning, everyone. Had a beautiful weekend out there, looks like that fine weather continues into this week as well. Weve got partly cloudy skies out at central park right now, 78 degrees, the winds coming in from the southwest at around 10 Miles Per Hour and, yeah, thats going to pull in more moisture, makes it feel more humid around the tristate region because it is going to be more humid. Anyhow, lets check the temperatures, see whats happening. D. C. , down in washington, a regional look, weve got 80 there, 69 in pittsburgh, 76, syracuse. Were still on the warmer side here at central park, 78. You see this cooler air over the northern states . That is going to be slide anything this general direction, and that will help to usher in some cooler and drier air, but that talks about two days to happen. Ahead of it, its warm, dewpoints at 61 in central park, 65 out at newark, and that means the humidity levels are starting to creep up a little bit. High pressure in control, nothing really goes on ford. Doesnt look like tomorrows coming to the area until later tonight, sometime after 8 00 or so. Therell be a few storms, most hi to the northwest, and as that front continues to work its way through tomorrow, we will be at risk for some more showers and storms in the area. Doesnt look like a promise that youre going to see showers, but there will be a scattering of showers here and there. And then as we head towards wednesday, wednesday morning on this time stamp, were looking at partly cloudy to mainly clear skies, and the cooler air are will start working through the tristate region at that time. Southwest winds today coming at you around 1020 knots, waves up to around 34 feet which is significant. Water temps between 72 and 75, uv index is up to a very high range. Lightning risk not a problem today, but this is a challenge, the rip current risk is at a high range, especially keep an eye on the kids in the water, and if you do get caught in the rip current, swim parallel to the shore until youre out of it and then come back to the shore nice and calm. Mostly sunny today, high temp up to about 90 in the city, hot and a little humid, some storms possible though i dont think too many folks get in on that. Lows between 64 and 74, and through the next seven days, a high of 90 today and tomorrow, 58 on wednesday. Thats 85 on wednesday, and it gets even cooler into thursday and friday. Friday looks like a pretty good shot of showers. Next weekend, already looking forward to that, sunny skies saturday and sunday with high temps on 80 and 82 on sunday. Not bad at all. Cooler they weres not too far away. Cooler temps not too far away. Gonzalez. Greg and ro, over to you. And its also sophias birthday, you know her mom, nicole. Oh, yes. Happy birthday to tamara. Thank you very much. Meanwhile, youre out of breath. You and victor. It was a lot of fun. He did win. The better jockey won. You want to meet Victor Victor espinoza, you can tonight in yonkers. Steiner sports is running this thing. Tickets are available is it yonkers or new rochelle . Oh, pardon me, youre right. Its a live q a with victor tonight at 6 30, and there are tickets available. By the way, victor is there on facebook. Follow him, check him out. And that was fun. That was a lot of fun. And you know what . This is a guy who makes a living riding horses. I cant believe he said yes to doing that little hippity hop with you. Lets face it hes got another race on wednesday. And i have to tell you this, i tried to win. It wasnt like, you know, lets just do this i noticed, your microphones were falling apart. I wanted to win, but he brought his best game as well. He went into competition mode. I said any tips, you know, for focusing, he said, well, i would have told you, but now youre my enemy. [laughter] anyway, very competitive guy but very nice guy. Victor espinoza, Steiner Sports, we thank you for coming by. All right. Interesting. So the Empire State Building this weekend, did you see it . Yeah. A very unique light show really not at the very top, weve seen that before, but look at this, the body of the building. You see that . Its a tiger. Yeah. They were putting up all endangered species basically. It lasted, what, a good 30, 40 minutes on the side of the building with music and Everything Else . It was supposed to be beautiful. I never got a chance to see it, lovely. Cecil the lion was one of the many animals featured, and 160 species for featured. Million dollars to produce. They had 40 projectors, and three hours. If you want to see the documentary theyre promote, its on the Discovery Channel this december. Racing extinction, its called, on in december. Sometimes i feel like thats extinction. I hear ya. Thank you. Empire state building, well okay. One of the funniest shows on tv, its called odd mom out, it will put you in the best mood. It makes fun of, well, basically these crazy, highpowered moms on the Upper East Side. I guess maybe i fit into that category. Show pokes fun at them, and jill is one of them too, so its really done in a lighthearted way, and were going to speak to jill about her show. Tonights the finale, odd mom out. Im caridee. Glorious way to start the why not . What is it, anyway, 70 do you believe its 165 degrees in iran . No. 165 degrees. No way. I never knew it was, like, earth. Make like the molten core of the crust. No. All right, folk, tell me about . Odd mom out, its on bravo. Its a fun look at the social world of the Upper East Side of manhattan. All right, thats jill cardman, there she is, right . Yes. And we hear should we hear lets hear it. Its that trick i do when i want to ditch a party early. I just put myself in front of the hostess three separate times, whoo hoo, party rocking. So now that i have a fulltime nanny and housekeepers, im wonder, what do you guys still do for your kids . Its like sex and the city updated . It really is. New york times bestselling author, shes the creator and the star of odd mom out. Im crazy about the show because, first of all, you poke fun at the women, but you are one of them. Well, its not meanspirited, its a satire, and im not really one of them, im sort of one foot in, one foot out because i live in this neighborhood, but i dont really roll with as fancy a group as the show. I agree. I do the same thing. I kind of have one foot in, one foot out. Exactly. But you pick on certain things that are so part of the Upper East Side, like getting your kid into kindergarten. Greg, you have never seen anything like it, right, jill . No. It is kiddie harvard, and its just so time con assuming that even if consuming just by virtue of the fact that your file fax is jammed, youre suicidal. Why would it be hard to get into kindergarten . I mean, what do you have to know . I think that they have different metrics at different schools of what you have to know. Youre like 5 years old at that point, right . Its insanity. When i grew up here in the 70s, you just kind of signed up because people would move to the suburbs, and there was this massive exodus. I would be dangling from a noose in greenwich, but thats just me. [laughter] i knew i was never leaving, and i think now more people are leaving. Jill had a few funny scenes where moms find out if their kids made it theyre hyperventilating in a lingerie bag. All right, lets watch it. We have Henry Portman we are pleased to have your child, Henry Portman, join our collegiate is kindergarten class, yes yes, yes, yes what . You didnt get in . But i had two trustees call, and one of them built the science lab oh wait, thats funny, but you have to see the part where theyre in the hospital, in the emergency room. Jill, im sorry, im like leading the discussion on your show. [laughter] cut to the emergency room. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. Two more rejections from trinity, one from horaceman, one panic attack and an antidepressant diet pill reaction. Okay. You know theres this thing called public school, right . [laughter] jill, it does seem very funny, very clever, but theres a real respect element of truth here, right . There is definitely in certain circles. Why are they so freaked out about these things . I have no idea. You know it. You know what . There really arent a lot of choices when it comes to theres only a certain amount of seats. Yeah. And also i think, unfortunately, certain schools, Public Schools are better than others, and if youre not in, like, the right neighborhood im actually not zoned for fancy ps6, so, you know, some schools are really nice, and some have metal detectors. [laughter] well, it all works out in the end, you know . I mean, theyre healthy theyre not, thats why were poking fun at it. Youre wrapping up the season tonight . Yes, tonight is the finale. I know we have a clip, do you want to set it up for us a little bit . Well, tonight is the big gala, Charity Galas get a little crazy, and this is new yorkers against Childhood Obesity [laughter] and it culminates in their black tie gail la which is an 80s prom theme. Okay. Lets talk a look. Over here is for the vip donors. I want you to get lots of candids of them. Renaldo, the celebrity psychic, will be doing readings over here. Excuse me, why is this banner cranberry and not fuschia . Take it down, get a color wheel, fix it. Anyway, have you written your speech yet for introducing me . No, im better off the cuff. Jill, you know, i love your edgy lingo, but i also hate surprises. Which reminds me, i dont want any nipples, side boob or back fat hanging out, so id like to see your dress beforehand. Okay, whats wrong . Youre not cracking any jokes. Its weird. Nothing. Im just really sleep deprived. Wait man. Are you hooked up . No, shes not. I think id like to move after watching this. [laughter] move to wow is it really like this . You know what . I think its actually worse in smaller towns because here you can be anonymous, and i think in small towns everyones up in your business, and the yardstick changes from town to town of what is considered important. Maybe its cheerleading in texas or something. You know, thats a very good point. Youre right. Smaller towns there there theres even more pressure. I buy that, jill. Ing so what are your friends saying . They love it. One of the running jokes on the show is brooke is pregnant, and her whole pregnancy she has no bump, and even executives said maybe we should get a little prosthesis, and i said, no, there are women who give birth and you think a diet coke can is going to come out, and then they have a bowling ball. I dont get it. There are women like that, as you know, walking the streets. Its really a very, very funny show. Go on demand and get them all, but we need to make sure the show is around next year. I hope so. We find out soon. Youve got to support odd mom out. Im telling you, you will laugh your head off. Thank you. Thats so nice. Coming from you very clever. Congratulations. Im neutral on the issue. I look forward to downloading it. You need to see it. All the best, jill, were going to be watching the finale tonight. Thank you. Its been a long time since ive had a rainy day by the boesch to play beach to play scrabble. Scrabble is good oldfashioned fun. The american classic. Lets take another look at it from that gods eye perspective. This board game im close to spelling beastie, but i cant spell it. It turned out, after a little bit of research, that scrabble we found out comes from new york city. Robert moses has more. Who knew . I know, who knew . Robert. Its a Great American game. Good to see you both, greg and rosanna. Perhaps like me youve played scrabble on one of those lazy summer days by the lake or by the batch. Well, who invented it . Who invented it . It is part of our series that we are calling it happened here. I stareed at my letters. Tprnio. Making a acceptletter english word out of this mess seemed an impossibility. To a threetime scrabble national champ, no problem. Tritone. Duh. Playing brought back memories of playing with my grandma who taught me to love scrabble. Whats the absolute most important thing for someone to know . Twoletter words. In the early 1930s, alfred butts lost his job as an architect had he not been out of work, it never would have been invented. With no work and a whole lot of time, butts, who loved word games, wanted to create one that combined luck and skill. He underlined words in newspapers and counted how many times every letter occurred. He wanted to determine how many tiles to make. He called his game lexico which was played with wood tiles but not board. He pitched it but was met with rejection letters. Undeterred, he kept working. But sketchedout boards on architecture, the result was a new game with a board called crisscross words. He would call on his friends in jackson heights, and they would off play at the Community Methodist church there to find out how the game played. And how it could be improved. That church where butts attended still stands at the corner of 81st street and 35th avenue, a sign at the intersection immortalizes his invention. This in 1948 crisscross words officially came to be known as scrabble. Although scrabble is now played on tablets and phones, the genius of the game lies in the fact that its rules and letter distribution really havent changed. You might think that butts was an expert player. He budget. His wife, nina, he liked to say, beat him at his own game. Nina played the word quixotic across two tripleword scores and achieved a score in the excess of 250 for the play. I saw the scorecard from that game back in 1956. Which brings us back to joe edly who is busy studying for the north american scrabble interview. He is eternally grateful to alfred butts for providing a lifetime of aha moments. Without his insven, i dont know what the d invention, i dont know what the heck i would have done. Next time youre playing, remember alfred butts and how he took the bad tiles that life gave him and created something great. He actually didnt make a whole lot of money from him. Yeah. He made enough to live comfortably, im told is his family getting any of the residuals or anything . That point. Hey, robert, were doing great at squabble. Right now got like, lets see here what do you have there . Why dont you get up and get a better look. I want to show you how nice im doing here. Ive got scotto, the jacottos in the czech republic. I never heard that before. Theyre your cousins, rosanna. Weve got yo. How about oy. Thats a word, right . Yeah. Kind of. Sort of. Thank you, robert. I never knew it was invented right here in new york. You know those twoletter words are the most important when youre playing scrabble. Theyre the easiest. Well, that, but also good scrabble players will play parallel x. What do you have up and down . Twoletter words up and down. You have to know those to. I hope they have fun at their convention in reno. [laughter] reno. True. I know. Listen, weve got to get ready and no dirty words. Well save that for lisa [laughter] from 2 live crew. Hes here today. Because 100 whole grain oats are incredibly good for you. Because theyre heart healthy because theyre good for kids. And granddads and everyone else in the family. Everything we do is because of what really matters most. The goodness of oats and the people we love. Weve got a member of 2 live crew. Oh, my goodness. Luther campbell, who took a very important fight all the way to the Supreme Court way back when. He was fighting censorship, you know . He tells the story in a new memoir out tomorrow, its called the book of luke my fight for truth, justice and liberty city. Welcome to good day new york, pal, how you doing . Thank yall for having me. Did you know you were going to take it all the way to the Supreme Court to, like basically, your lyrics were not for kids at the time. No, it wasnt. I mean, the case that went to case. And because of rap music and at that time, you know, it was getting into all different types of households, and people were coming after us, and i was just having cases from everywhere. So did you know what you were doing at the time . Did you really, like, you were really trying to make a statement . Well, at the beginning it was, like, you know, like think other Freshman College student, know . Getting serious, you know . Before you know it, you know, i went from one District Court of appeals to another District Court of appeals. Our music was deemed obscene, and it got serious. So i had to make a determination or just fold. And you sure did. Way. Forget about the legal arguments for a second. Do me a favor, make the case for you talked about having fun with your friends. Friends sometimes talk liar that, when like that, but when its mainstream, some people get uncomfortable. What do you tell them about the sometimes borderline lyrics . We live in a free country, the United States of america what if somebody cant protect their kid from your lyrics in a free country . If they cant protect their kids . Right. You know what i mean parenting. I say thats bad parenting. Weve got to talk to our kids about guns, weve got to talk to our kids about safe sex, weve got to talk to our kids about a lot of things and if we dont do that and allow society to do it, then that becomes a problem. But you are hot. When your songs were hot, you had young kids. Yeah. Were they listening to your music . No. They didnt want to hear pops music. That was corny to them. Did you have to protect your kids from your own music . Oh, yes. No doubt about it. I mean, thats the reason why, you know, when youre reading the book, discover the Parental Advisory sticker because i felt it was my responsibility to make sure that kids didnt get the music. Well, the book is fascinating. It takes you all the way back to when you were just a kid growing up and starting in the shed in your mothers backyard. Yep, yep. And thats how the whole luke records came about . Yeah. At first i had a pacman machine. You know, before the pacman machine, i was selling lemonade. What we called frozen cups in florida. Yeah. And we put the machine in there. Then i had to dump the machine out and start putting records in there. An entrepreneur at how old . At about 12 years old. Yeah. Of. And so 2 live crew, you came across you liked their music, and then you just decided to join the group and thats when, i guess yes. I didnt want originally want to be in the group. I just wanted to produce them and put records out. Before you know it, you know, it was just too much competition, so i had to get in the group, you know, change the direction of the group, and here i am today. How is 2 live crew right now . Whats the status . Together for years, they take breaks . Whats 2 live crews status right now . Those guys perform. I got out of group about 23 years ago, you know . Just this year we did a few concerts together. Im going to do a couple more shows, reunion shows with them. But theyve been performing, doing what theyve been doing, and ive been constantly still doing what ive been doing. So i love it. I found out reading your book and reading reviews that not only, you know, hey, listen, you may have a little potty mouth [laughter] but youre also a football coach, right . Yes. Youre out there, youre actually you mellowed. No doubt about out. [laughter] i started a program 25 years ago, and i talk about it in the book. And i always said when my career dies down, ill go out and start back coaching. So now i coach there and i also coach at high school right now. Tell us about the liberty city liberty city optimists. And how old are they . Oh, man, they go from 415. Our first kids were chad johnson, and right now weve got california von today friedman in there, Atlanta Falcons whats your coaching philosophy . My coaching philosophy is accountability and responsibility. I coach from the philosophy of life on the football field is the same life that you have to deal with every day. Like it. Interesting. Do you have any of those crazy parents who, like, kind of hover around and tell you what to do while youre coaching . No. I make them sign a waiver before. You do . Dont come on my field. Really . Do you really . Yes, i do. Something tells me they dont come on the field of a former member of 2 live crew. [laughter] i dont think theyre going to be in a rush to do that, theyre going to respect that. Right. [laughter] what do you think about the Music Industry these days . What do i think about it today . I mean, its crazy. I mean, you hear the drake and the nicki minajs and all those squabbles and things like that. I mean, the music is not like it used to be because you can listen to 64 songs on the radio right now, you can only listen to 13 songs, and i think thats why only 13 . Because once they desensitize it i mean, not desensitize it, but deregulate it, the conglomerates start buying up all the local radio stations, and before you know it, theres only 13 song ises, and you get one disc jockey from some part of the country talking to you. E just dont like it now now nowadays. The book of luke, his fight for truth, justice and kind of like superman, luther. Yeah. Good stuff. Liberty city.
