First, whatle exactly is a Market Correction . It occurs when values decline 10 or more, stopping an upward trend. Many analysts believe a correction fixes an over priced or inflated market bringing prices down to their actual value. For some it is an opportunity to get into market that may have been been out of reach. Their buying pushes prices back up and stops the correction. A correction usually lasts less than two months, preventing a huge prolonged selloff or a bubble burst, similar to what happened in 2000. People thought the weekend would calm things down but its not looking so good. No. This started in china. I have to call it a crash. There is no short way to put it. Second, china is the second largest economy in the world. There is no avoiding it. We are stronger than they are. Were the strongest we have been. We used numbers when we last had a correction. We are much better off. You said something to our produce overnight. The great myth is that the stock market always reacts rationally. It doesnt always. Right. Given that, is it reacting rationally now . We are going to get a 7 to 12 decline. If its like the last three times we imported the problems from overseas. Yes, thats over reaction because gasoline will be down. The dollar will go down. Thats important. Interest rates will be on holdle if the Federal Reserve pays attention. If we get to an official correction of 10 how do we know if its just that . What are the signs it could go longer and deeper . We have to see a spike in unemployment which is unlikely. We have to see Interest Rates and inflation go higher which is off the table and we have to see a banking crisis which is inconceivable. One of the other things you have said on the show, nobody has ever made a dime panicking. Right. Having said that, what should the average investor do in this process . On friday, 403 of the 500 stocks in the s p were up versus two years ago. If you have big profits there is nothing wrong with taking some off the table. It will be a bad today, probablile a bad week. This Morning Police are investigating a traffic stop in louisiana sunday gone tragically wrong after a 13year state trooper was shot by a man pulled over on the side of the road. According to police, trooper Steven Vincent was responding to reports of an erratic driver in a pickup truck. He found the truck in a ditch. The driver reportedly got out of the car, opening fire with a sawedoff shotgun, hitting critically injuring the officer. I watched the video. The door came open and i saw a shotgun blast. He was carrying a sawed off shotgun. That wasnt to do anything else but hurt somebody. Kill somebody. I watched kevin dagle walk from his pickup truck, walk over to the trooper, ask if hes alive. You can hear him breathing saying, boy, youre lucky. Youre going to die soon. Reporter the suspect was identified later as kevin dagle. Other drivers pulled over to help the trooper, using his police radio to call authorities, the men tackling the suspect to the ground. The incredible Good Samaritan wrestling with him. Consumer reports said to have tested hundreds of pounds of ground beef from across the countr land found concerning levels of bacteria in most samples but especially in conventionally raised cows, not organic i. s food for thought as americans prepare for the last cookouts of the summer. Moo reporter on nicks farm in maryland you might say the cows are home on the range. We dont give them antibiotics. We dont give them hormones. Reporter raised and Certified Organic and grass fed, Consumer Reports this is how cows destined for store shelves should be raised. In an article titled how safe is your beef. Nc beef, its whats for dinner. Reporter its whats for dinner to the tune of 66 poubd pounds a year for the average american. In the investigation Consumer Reports purchased 300 packages of ground beef from 103 Stores Across the country. The magazine categorized 181 packages as conventionally produced. Cows raised on feedlots, grai fed and given antibiotics. The other 119 packages were sustainable from cows which were either grassfed, usda organic or antibiotics free. The samples were analyzed for five types of illness causing bacteria. There was a significant difference between prevalence levels on conventional beef which was higher than those on the more sustainably produced beef. Reporter more than 80 of conventionally produced beef contained more than two types of bacteria compared with less than 60 of sustainable beef. Two potentially harmful bacterias, staphylococcus aureus and e. Coli are due to how cows are handled. But a group disagrees. With regard to food safety we dont see differences in the syowems. Not onl does the usda test the product, so does the company safe. Reporter the usda points out none of the e. Coli found in the Consumer Reports study was the toxin producing variety responsible for headlinemaking outbreaks. The beef industry in the u. S. Is safe. Whether it is a conventionally raised product, organic, natural product, the consumer can have confidence that they have taken action to make the product safer over the last ten years. Reporter the usda tells nbc news measures taken to improve ground beef safety include a zero tolerance policy for six dangerous strains of e. Many say since the great financial crisis back in 2008, 2009. For a lot of people this is a very, very stark, very staunch reminder there is risk in the marketplace. We are down 165 points in the dow now. Putting it in perspective and in the course of the last five days a terrible week for the dow last week, capped off on friday when it dropped about 530 points. Are we seeing an official correction now . A 10 decline in values . We did. Thats a good point here. As of fridays close, we did pull back more than 10 from the record highs in the Dow Jones Industrial average average. We are in that correction territory. Thats viewed negatively by some traders. Last week the headlines you saw in the papers this weekend said the Dow Jones Industrial average lost about 1,000 plus points in the course of a trading week. Five days. We lost that many in the first three or four minutes of trading today. Again, a very ugly open to start this monday. It will be interesting to see whether there is stability thats found right now. The headlines, of course, right now are certainly not positive here sc. When you talk about stability, arent there systems in place that would stop the carnage after a certain level of loss . There are. There are policies that are put in place by exchanges. In essence, to allow people who participate, who are involved directly with markets and exchanges to kind of put speed bumps up and stop signs up so things can be halted, reassessed and possibly reopened, halted again. There are a number of those emergencytype measures being put into place. A lot of people feel strange about this now. The last time we saw many of these types of instruments employed it was during the financial crisis. This is by no means a financial crisis now. We are a much different country and economy than we were back then. Much healthier, some argue. It does provide flashbacks not in a good way, about what it was like during the bad days during 2009. We talked earlier on our show about opportunity. A lot of people see this as devastation. Others see it as opportunity. Do you hold back on opportunity until you get what you talked about some stability for the moment . Thats tough. Everybody should talk to their own financial adviser. What i would say is this its very, very difficult for anybody trader, investor or otherwise to time the market. You cant say, im going to pick this as the bottom. I will buy now or this is the top, i will sell now. Many Financial Advisers will tell clients, sit down and figure out whether stocks, bonds or currencies or commodities, any type of investment is right for their portfolio. What kind of waiting will it have . This is a big reminder for investors that its about maybe dollar cost averaging. The dow off to a rough spot. You see t down 640 points at th is moment. Thats less than a half hour of trading. It had been down more than 1,000 points in the first four minutes after the market opened this morning coming after the dow dropped more than 1,000 points over the course of the last week amid concerns of a global selloff. Concerns about chinas economy. Weather, haze. Hot, humid. High 85. Slight chance of showers to the west. Tonight showers and storms possible. 71 degrees tomorrow. The dow down more than 600 points right now after plummeting more than 1,000 points down just after the opening bell. Lets get right to cnbc, theyre keeping a close eye what is going on. You definitely are on a roller markets. Whats behind all of this . Basically, Global Growth worries. The market is worried that the Global Economy is slowing down and china is one of the biggest economies in the world and their stock market and economy have been slowing dramatically. Weve seen big losses in the chinese stock market. And although it might not seem important to u. S. Investors, the problem is that a lot of Big Companies like mcdonalds and apple and intel, they all do business in china. If the Chinese Consumer pulls back and cant buy their products, it really hits their bottom line. Wall street is very worried about that. Theyre also worried because the Chinese Government authorities which control that market dont seem to be putting in place the type of support that that market needs right now. So as a result of that, the selling intensified overnight in the european markets and the asian markets. And thats why we saw that 1,000 point plunge in the Dow Jones Industrial average. Were down 600 points but it looks like its starting to steady out a little bit. Its going to be a rocky day, certainly, but at least we didnt go back down and test that 1,000 minus point again on the market. All right. Sue, thank you very much.
