"on the money" tonight, a grim new look at one city's jobless crisis. detroit's unemployment rate has hit 28.9%. almost one in three people there trying to find work. today, detroit's mayor laid off more than 200 city workers. for the first time in its history, toyota is closing a major assembly plant, shutting down a california factory it's run with gm for 25 years. but the surge in auto sales helped raise consumer spending, .2% last month. federal health officials today released the latest on the spread of the h1n1 swine flu, saying the number of cases seems to be rising in the southeast. since the start of the outbreak, more than 8800 americans have been hospitalized and at least 556 have died. and with flu season bearing down, there are special warnings for pregnant women, creating concern among many of them. here's sharyn alfonsi. >> reporter: when it comes to drinking caffeine, sipping wine or even taking an aspirin, pregnant women usually follow their doctors advice religiously. but many mothers to be are greeting a new piece of advice with caution. the cdc is now strongly recommending that all pregnant women be vaccinated with the swine flu. >> it's sort of nerve wracking. you're the guinea pigs. i don't know what's worse, getting sick from the vaccine or getting sick from the swine flu. >> reporter: the recommendation comes after a study, released last month, showing that pregnant women are four times more likely to be hospitalized by swine flu than other people. >> clearly influenza is a problem for pregnant women. it increases with each trimester, your risk for hospitalization and adverse outcome is greatest the closer to delivery that you become. >> reporter: the cdc has urged pregnant women to get season flu vaccines for years and says it's safe for all trimesters. but a surprisingly low number, less than 15%, actually get vaccinated. >> move your arm for me. >> reporter: the national institute of allergy and infectious disease says it is testing the swine flu vaccine on children, adults and pregnant women next month. but many moms worry about whether the new vaccine will be tested enough before millions of doses are distributed. >> the risk to pregnant women from the disease is substantial. the risk of a vaccine is theoretical based on a very good track record of safety of the vaccine. >> reporter: still, some expectant mothers, like raven jefferson, are concerned. >> i have to think about me and the baby, not just me. >> reporter: jefferson has decided not to get the vaccine. like other expectant moms, she's heard the new government recommendation, but decided to rely on old fashioned mother's intuition, instead. sharyn alfonsi, abc news, new york. and when we come back, the public and private sides of ted kennedy. attack caused by a completely blocked artery, another heart attack could be lurking waiting to strike. a heart attack caused by a clot, one that could be fatal. but plavix helps save lives. plavix taken with other heart medicines, goes beyond what other heart medicines do alone, to provide greater protection against heart attack or stroke and even death by helping to keep blood platelets from sticking together and forming clots. ask your doctor about plavix, protection that helps save lives. if you have a stomach ulcer or other condition that causes bleeding you should not use plavix. taking plavix alone or with some other medicines including aspirin may increase bleeding risk, tell your doctor before planning surgery or taking aspirin or other medicines with plavix, especially if you've had a stroke. some medicines that are used to treat heartburn or stomach ulcers, like prilosec, may affect how plavix works, so tell your doctor if you are taking other medicines. if fever, unexplained weakness or confusion develops, tell your doctor promptly. these may be signs of ttp, a rare but potentially life-threatening condition reported sometimes less than 2 weeks after starting plavix. other rare but serious side effects may occur. if you take plavix with other heart medicines, continuing to do so will help increase protection against a future heart attack or stroke. feeling better doesn't mean you're not at risk. stay with plavix. i see you're flatulent in three languages... graduated top of your gas...
