new baptist church. eyewitness news is seconds away. good morning. welcome to wjz this sunday. i'm steve barrett. >> and i'm tim williams. it's about 60 degrees. pretty cloudy day today. not quite as pretty as yesterday morning. we had a few sprinkle across the region. there's not a lot of activity out there. but a few light showers move across the region, much of that not making it to the ground. and many of the rain has evaporated into the air. there's not a lot behind it. so we'll still see sun today and mostly dry but there's a larger system out to the west and bringing us shower activity. it's been trying to make it this way but not really successfully. we'll see sun through the day and afternoon highs getting up into the high to mid-70s. we'll look for shower activity tomorrow but we'll talk about na your complete forecast. here's what people are talking about this morning. a fire rips through a cecil county townhouse killing three kids inside. the children's mother is suffering from critical burns. >> reporter: a shrine has been set up in front of the northeast home where the three children died. neighbor kids take it all in. a man living nearby tried to safe children. >> flames were so high, we could not get through the door. we hear the babies screaming and pleading for help. but even with fire encontinuing wishers -- each continuing extinguishers they were unsuccessful. >> reporter: fighters found three bodies inside. >> and she has a forth child that was staying with grandmother up in pennsylvania. reporter: cause of the fire has not been determined but it did start in the living room on the first floor. neighbors heard breaking glass at first and jewel johnson was able to call 911 and then they heard the screaming. they said it is frustrating and devastate. >> i feel deeply, deeply sorry for the family. i can imagine how it would feel to lose three innocent children. jewel johnson remains in critical but stable condition at the burn center. and in baltimore, firefighters were battling a big flame in the industrial center in brook lung. the smoke was seen for miles and investigators said that some wood pallets caught fire starting the blaze. they brought it under control and no one hurt. a fisherman makes a grew some discovery in -- gruesome park. he found remains. he did not want to be identified. he was going fishing at a pond off a river road and he spot what had looked like a knee. the state police are trying to determine the identity and if there was any foul play involved. a dog was attacked with a machete. the dog is now recovering at house they charged a neighbor with animal mutilation and trespass in the case. the university of virginia's men's lacrosse team took the field this weekend for the first time since the police charged their teammate george human beingly for murdering yeardly love. they took the field a nash said one love on their shirt. they spoke about playing with heavy hearts. >> i think everyone is handleing it the best they can. it's just unbelievable. it's confusing and sad. it's a mix of emotions that everyone is going through right now. >> the women's team plays towson in charlottesville this afternoon. it's the first game without love. numbers are in on maryland's biggest day of racing, the preakness stakes. more than 95,000 people attend. >> from the infield we report from pimlico. >> reporter: in field revelers gathered for music, drinks and for some a midday napa mist a corporate tents and some were there with the emphasis on fashion. all of a crowd increase from last year's downturn. super saver the only hope for a triple crown winner. but the best in baltimore on this day is looking at lucky. leading the charge down the middle of the stretch holding off first dude and jackson ben. >> when he crossed, it brought back all the feelings -- you can't put a price on the feeling of winning this classic. it's unbelievable. it's like wing a gold medal. >> reporter: when did you finally feel when you had the race one? >> as soon as i crossed the wire. >> reporter: ideal weather conditions increased the attendance. this gives maryland racing its own version of the single day triple crown. back to you. yesterday's ten dance actually jumped by 27,000 fans. 95,000 people made the trim to pimlico compared to about 78,000 last year. and the triple crown of horse racing wraps newspaper three weeks with the 142nd racing. >> i guess the get your preak campaign worked. but today, of course is the big cleanup. the recycle cleanup with all the cans. and the money usually goes to fund rain forest renovations -- rehabilitation. it's usually a mess in the infield. a nice day in store. we had a bit of a damp start in some places. not many people seeing sprinkles but a few around. but what we're looking at is a larger system moving from the west and a stalled front to the south. it's going to be a disturbance that rides pretty much along that front to the south. it's going bring us a chance for showers into the beginning of the week and then we dry out nicely head into a end of the week. so right now just a fuse light sprinkles. not a lot of this making it to the grounds this morning. you see in ocean city, you may see a shower or two moving into salisbury and cambridge and ocean city. most of us will see drier conditions today. not quite as priest a day and not quite as much sunshine and blue sky but it will be relatively dry through the. and the next chance of rain comes by way monday afternoon into tuesday. so we'll keep you posted. 63 degrees and the temperature there. and 48 is the dew point relative humidity at 58% and north easterly wind is 9 miles an hour and that is sitting over bwi marshal and temperatures are ranging from five in oakland to about 65 in packs river and 67 in elk land and cumberland and 63 at regan nation and 61 in ocean city where the winds are coming in from the north at 6 miles an hour. a bit of a northeasterly flow. and that will bring in cooler air and some of it is off of water. so that will contribute to the cloud cover and cooler temperature day than yesterday. but we're going to watch this widely scattered disturbance moving across the region monday into tuesday. tuesday we could see steadier rain. it will take a little while for this to get into here in the afternoon hours. most of this rain activity is drying out across the region. built cloud cover is still there. as we get a bit of a break tomorrow for the most part. the afternoon we start to look at more rain moving in that low stays to our south primarily. but it keeps the rain with us through about wednesday. and we start to see drying out. the temperatures never take too much of a hit and we stay in the mid-70s all week long. so the temperatures don't drop too much. but we'll see the rain lingering wednesday morning and see a nice roughen dry days into next saturday and we expect, unfortunately, the next chance for some showers. and the sunset today 8:13 and the next high day 6:54 and the bay temperature 64 degrees. we'll look for a potential shower scattered through this week and mostly cloudy tomorrow and cooler and showers in the evening and 63. and the next five days, 65 on tuesday, 71 and 77 and 81. still ahead eyewitness news sunday morning. michael jackson's doctor doctor is making news this morning. this time for saving a woman's life according to a spokesperson, dr. murray helped stabilize a young woman that lost consciousness on a flight from houston to phoenix. he found the woman with a weak pulse and hooked her up to an iv from the plane's medical kit. measure have i awaiting trial for drugs that may have killed michael jackson last summer. take a listen to this. that was at relentless storm that poured 1 inch size hail for more than 20 minutes. more than 6 inches of hail was left on the ground and several traffic accidents. but no one was seriously hurt. and in maryland unsteady of dropping out of the sky, we got u.s. army golden nights dropping from the sky. thousands of people are heading to the air force airport this weekend to see cancer, you should be getting screened by that time. last year was a great year. unfortunately the bus broke down last year and there was no digital examination so they call came in to have the blood this year they get bodily injury of them. but we still hope to have a great year this year and have over hundred men. >> reporter: and -- over -- it's between 8:30 and 3:00 at the baptist church on new kleenex® brand hand towels. a clean, fresh towel every time. welcome back. i'm stevei'm tim williams. we'll see some sunshine not quite as much as yesterday. but the chance of showers that we had this morning is starting to dissipate on the right corner. the showers from cambridge to ocean city, that will ease off and the better chance of rain comes tomorrow afternoon. but not ruling out a chance of a scattered shower or two but most of us will not see them. 73 today and shower in the morning and the chance is deminishing as we speak. clouds and sun. tonight partly cloudy and 53 tomorrow mostly cloudy and chance of showers in the afternoon and the overnight hours. here's what people are talking about. bp said it has hit another problem trying stop the oil gushing it into the gulf of mexico so they're giving it another go. here's the latest from louisiana. >> reporter: bp said it's making progress in sticking a mile long tube into the gushing oil well on the bought toll of the beautiful. it was supposed to stop running overnight and it hit a snag on friday. they failed to make a connection, forcing the company to bring it to the surface to make adjustments. and the coast guard started using underwater dispercentments. >> we did not cross this threshold light little. it will be analyzed and monitored. >> reporter: it breaks the oil down into small drops stoping it from spreading. but the dispersements that are a short-term solution that could lead to language term damage it could affect the fishing industries for many, many years to come. >> reporter: this man has worked on oil spills all over the world. he's frustrated that oil companies don't invest in cleanup. this is the result of another technology successfully used in canada. president obama's interior secretary promise that's the government will not rest till the oil is cleaned up. he also sent this letter to bp demanding immediate public clarification about the company's intentions to pay all costs associated with the spill. researchers are trying to work quick through chart the effects of the oil spill. and the oil has depleted oxygen levels in some area business 30%. a dense cloud volcanic ash from iceland is coming over eastern europe again. in the last month it caused chaos in european airptz grounding thousands of flights. the volcano in iceland shows no sign of slowing down. space shuttle atlantis is catching up to the international space station. they're due there in about two hours. they'll install a new compartment and try free a snagged cable at the station. only two more missions remain. car accidents are the leading cause much deaths in 15 to zero-year-olds. and there's a new push to keep them safe. and they're trying to educate the drivers about the dangers on the road. >> regard left and hard right. >> reporter: how can a golf cart headache a teenager -- when they were wearing goggles to simulate being drunk. they started the driver's classes for kids whose parents wore for them. >> we had parents tell us that they could see a change in the behavior in the kids after programs like this. more intent behind the wheel. >> reporter: they talked to shock trauma nurses and seeing how even with the seat belt accidents can hurt. the safety course was only offered to the kids whose parents worked at b.e.g. but this year they open it had up for the parents whose kids work for the baltimore police department. >> it's an excellent way for young people to experience the hazards and responsibility of driving on our roadways. reporter: parents who know that the statistics in their hearts that this is the most dangerous time in the life of their child. >> i hope she take as way how to drive safely and what to think about what these driving and what not to do and just to stay safe. >> i'll remember my time with my little beer goggles. >> reporter: what is the take away? >> not to drink and drive. >> states like maker they're in use graduated driverless have seen lower death rates. episcopal church first has their first lesbian pastor. she's a former director of st. margaret's in annapolis. she hopes to use her new position to bring unity to the church and reach out to those that to be having a gay woman in the priesthood. >> i would invite them to meet with me if they are willing. i'm a reconciling person and i will seek to reach out and engage with people that think and believe differently than do i and try build a relationship with them. >> she will serve as bishop of diocese of los angeles. as lawmakers abated the national health care bill, some lawmakers went door-to-door to boost coverage. they say face-to-face is the best way to reach those that need health care. >> reporter: behind the door is an opportunity for cynthia marshal. she's part of a group called path. they canvassed neighborhood, knock on doors and ask one question. is there anyone in your household going without health care. they believe most residents don't know about healthy howard. it offers health care at low monthly rates. many people are eligible but not signed up. >> people have said i'm so glad that you're here. i've been worried about health care for a long time and now i have a chance to have it. >> reporter: this woman lived for teen years without health care. healthy howard is part of the trend she's going door-to-door. >> people don't always know where to go for help and there are so many people struggling. >> reporter: so fart door-to- door campaign has reached about 600 people. they say that the goal is to tell at least 4,000 people about healthy howard. >> there's nothing that replaces talking to people face- to-face in terms much getting them engaged and getting them involved in the program. >> one fellow just wanted to rant about national health care and he thanked me for letting him rant on. >> reporter: and for another opportunity. it has about 150 volunteers. it plans to keep campaigning till october. turning to sports. the orioles looking for their fourth straight win cleveland in front a crowd of 9,000 fan -- 29,000 fans. the o's could not push another run across the plate and the bullpen simply implode giving up eight runs in the ninth evening. the orioles take to the field against the cleveland indians trying to win the series. you can catch the series at 1:30. watch it live on wjz 13. you would think after a fan was tasered on the field in philadelphia they would get the message. not the case. a fan actually jumped on the field to shake the hand of a flavor. he would avoid security for a little while till he ended up at the bottom of a pile of security guards. would you think that they learn, but they don't. tv coverage typically diverts coverage away from the fans. but would you think that somebody would learn they don't. security guards live for that kind think. >> and would you think how many drinks did he take in at the game it do something like to? >> considering that he ran around sureless. >> and he almost fell a couple of times. >> yeah. i love it when they run on to a football field and the players get him first. would you think that happened at the preakness. >> you know you're not supposed to be out here. >> yes fortunately we had no problems here locally. and it just -- this is what i was talking about two days ago the orioles won 8-1. i suggested that they take all the extra guns and put them aside for when they need them f they did that they could have used the extra six runs. it's my own campaign. it won't work. >> change the game to fit us. >> yes. hopefully they'll do better today. today we're looking at a decent day. if you're going camden yards, here's its forecast. you can see the action at 1:30. temperatures around 70 degrees. the orioles and the indians. it will be a decent day today. high pressure in control approaching rain from the south and west. it will get here tomorrow afternoon. we had a fleeting chance of showers today. we may have another late tonight. but most of us will see drier conditions not as priest a day as yesterday and not quite as much blue sky but the temperatures will be nice and cooperative and temperatures getting about ten degrees higher than we are right now and we'll top out into the low and hid 70s. a northeasterly wind at 9 miles an hour. we have 52 in oakland, 65 in packs river and 63 from baltimore -- -- baltimore/marshal/washington international. this is a widely scattered mess. this is a low that will form along the front that brought us the showers friday night that is still stalled in the south. so the activity is ride ago cross the south of us and trying to make its way n but it is because of that activity that we're getting the flow here and the clouds coming off the north and north east. so we'll deal with that for the next day or so but the chance of rain better tomorrow afternoon and linggers through wednesday before we start to see clearing. temperatures in 60 to 70-degree range and we start to warm up as we dry out heading into thursday and friday and the temperatures going up into the 80s. this is a pleasant forecast in store. but tomorrow night all bets are off. we're looking at 8:13. bay temperature is 6 degrees. we're looking for the a.m. showers trying dry up. and we'll see temperatures get up to 73 and 65 tonight and mostly cloudy and cooler tomorrow and 63 degrees and 65 on tuesday. 71 on wednesday, 77 and eight one overnight lows in the low to mid-50s. >> so the payoff for yesterday's and tomorrow's nice weather will be the rain on monday?
