Grief tonight in the aftermath of a heartwrenching act of violence at a louisiana movie theater. Now as a disturbing picture comes to light about an isolated angry gunman who took the lives of two innocent young will and his own. Many are questioning why some one with his history had access to firearms in the first place . Abcs tom llamas is on the scene. Reporter a horrifying tragedy in a place most people feel safe. I saw him standing. He was wearing a hat. A big jacket. And i could just see his, you know hand going in a semicircle and the lights coming. Reporter a night at the movies turning deadly. You hear the first shot. At first your initial reaction is it is not a gun because it would never be a gun. Not here. Reporter you realize this is real. This guy is shooting everyone in the theater. He was so close to us. Reporter tonight new details emerging of the shooter, 59yearold, john russel houser. Of his victims two dead and nine wounded. And of the terrifying moments after he opened fire inside the lafayette movie theater. It all began last night. He walked in just like any other patron purchased a ticket to watch the movie. It didnt set off any alarms with any body. Reporter houser attending the 7 10 of trainwreck. Sitting alone at the back of the theater. At 7 30 he started shooting. Emily mann sitting feet away from the gunman. Something clicked in your brain that said run. When did that happen . The second shot. When it wasnt just one, wasnt a firecracker. Reporter confusion and chaos as houser fires 13 rounds from a 40 caliber handgun. I was down between the seat in front of me and my seat. You feel stuck. You have to get out. Reporter emily crawled her way out to safety. A woman pulled me around. She probably got me out of there, three or four second faster than i would have by myself. She stayed there another second. For me. Reporter there were other heroes. Teachers, jena meaux and ali martin together jena threw her body between the gun and her friend taking a bullet saving alis life. Ali jumping into action herself pulling the fire alarm. The second teacher had the presence of mind to pull the fire alarm. Who knows how many lives were saved by the presence of mind. Reporter outside the auditorium, panic at the multiplex multiplex. 300 people desperate to get out. We were running out of the lobby past people in line getting popcorn. The guy taking tickets. We were renunning. Teenagers rung out telling everybody to run for her life. We saw a lady with blood all over her leg. I grabbed my child. We just all ran. Reporter Police Respond in less than a minute. Within 60 seconds or less we had four officers who maiden tree into the theater to engage. Reporter housers 1995 blue Lincoln Continental parked outside the theater exit door. His keys on top of a tire. We feel that when he spotted the officers he retreated back into the theater and thats when he selfinflicted. A certain level of planning went into this. He stayed in the theater approximately 20 minutes. And parks his car outside for a getaway. His vehicle had a switched license tag on it. He was staying at a local motel on university avenue. We served the search warrant on that motel room at about 4 30 this morning. We found wigs and glasses and disguises basically in his room. Reporter Authorities Say houser was a lone wolf who was estranged from his wife and family and constantly on the move. Previously resided in the state of alabama. He is kind of a drifter. Hes been in lafayette since early july as far as we can tell. Rip he was educated politically active even running for Public Office in georgia. I think he portrayed himself as a Community Watch dog against government. Reporter houser is believed to have a history of Mental Illness and domestic violence. Court documents describe him as showing signs of manic depression and bipolar disorder. According to authorities, houser applied for a concealed gun permit in 2006. That permit was denied. In 1989 or 90 he was arrested for an arson case in columbus georgia. Reporter in 2008 family members filed a temporary order of protection against houser after he made threats against his daughters fiance. Housers wife was so worried about his behavior she removed all guns from their house. He is mad at the world. He blames the world, perhaps, for his plight in life. Reporter perhaps the biggest red flag of the violence to come was his active presence online. Houser apparently posting dozens of messages on antigovernment, neonazi forums citing hitler as being the most successful that ever lived. He also chillingly write, you must realize the power of the lone wolf is the power that comes forth in all situations. Look within yourselves. Awe lone wolves are people who are not formally affiliated with organized groups who usually carry out attacks without affiliating with other people. Despite having been accused of various crimes and history of mental instability houser was apparently able to buy his gun legally at an alabama pawnshop. Since the devastating newtown massacre that killed 20 children and 6 adults eight states have passed laws requiring background checks. I sure had a lot on my mind when i got out of the hospital after a dvt blood clot. What about my family . My lil buddy . And what if this happened again . I was given warfarin in the hospital but i wondered if this was the right treatment for me. Then my doctor told me about eliquis. Eliquis treats dvt and pe blood clots and reduces the risk of them happening again. Not only does eliquis treat dvt and pe blood clots but eliquis also had significantly less major bleeding than the standard treatment. Knowing eliquis had both. Turned around my thinking. Dont stop eliquis unless your doctor tells you to. Eliquis can cause serious and in rare cases fatal bleeding. Dont take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. If you had a spinal injection while on eliquis call your doctor right away if you have tingling numbness, or muscle weakness. While taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily. And it may take longer than usual for bleeding to stop. Seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. Eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. Tell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures. Eliquis treats dvt pe blood clots. Plus had less major bleeding. Both made switching to eliquis right for me. Ask your doctor if its right for you. Im gonna crack like nobodys watching and eat like i skipped lunch. Why . And that tiny speck flying down the monstrous peak is a man, garrett mcnamara, defying the sea god as he surfs into the record books. The ocean is our church and our playground and thank god its my office as well. Mcnamara is one of the worlds most celebrated big wave surfers a sport in which 20foot waves are just the minimum price of entry. Outside the surfing community he was a virtual unknown until photos of his extraordinary feat started rocketing around the world including this 78foot Guinness World record. At 47 years old most professional athletes might consider retiring at the top of such a dangerous game but this daredevil hawaiian is still pushing the envelope chasing one final prize to surf the perfect wave. What does the wave look like in your head . When it comes, youll see. Reporter you have given it a name . Big mama is out there. She is looming out there in the deep. Reporter if mcnamara is cab tin ahab then big mama is the white whale, the obsession that sends him to the ends of the earth chasing the elusive beast. This is where he is convince heed will find her off the coast of a sleepy village in portugal called nazarey, we are there as a nasty Storm Brewing in the atlantic promises to produce one of the biggest swells mcnamara has ever seen one more chance to make history. At this point in your career do you still get nervous . I never really get nervous. I get excited. Reporter in nazarey he found a place that has record breaking sets. A phenomenon fueled by an underwater Canyon Offshore that powers the swells from 3 miles deep. For generations fishermen were practically the only souls willing to brave the dangerous surf. Thousands of people die in nazarey because of the waves. Reporter did you grow up fearing the waves . No respected them. Reporter unforgiving swells around the world have drowned fellow big wave surfers. In just two years ago in nazarey, maya gabera was nearly killed by an 80foot monster. These days those deadly risks weigh heavier on mcnamara because he and his wife nicole had a son they named barrel after the holly tube of a perfect breaking brave. We wanted to get a sense of the rush that has driven him for so many years despite the danger. Ride a wave reporter he invited me on a ride. Well be heading through these waves to the beach to get a sense of how big they are. You have got to hold on tight. [ indiscernible ] thats awesome. Its a rush. Reporter we go over before the answer comes. Its shallow but nearly impossible to stand or swim in the overpowering current. Very difficult to get out. Can only imageine what happens when you fall off one of those big guys. Its dawn on the morning of the big swell. Back at the are bar mcnamara and his team dart around making their final preparations. Yeah. Reporter for a show maverick moments launching this fall. The sun reveals a violent tangle of cascading surf. Word has spread. Hundreds gather for the show. As garrett gets in the zone its not the peril but the prize he is focused on. His support team three fellow surfers who will alternate towing each other into the waves on jet skis and respond immediately if any one gets into trouble. Tell them i will get a wave. Reporter up on the lighthouse nicole plays coach. Coordinating safety while directing her husband into the belly of the biggest sets. All good . You have a couple more waves. But more to the north of you. Reporter the hunt is on for big mama. At first, a promising wave. But mcnamara loses control. I turned a little too hard. Hahaha. Reporter there are a dozen other surfers in the water, but none with the same level of support. So this is the fear if you take a wave straight off of the lighthouse here too close to shore, you are going to end up on these rocks and once you are sucked in there its impossible to get out. Hey, garrett, somebody is getting really pounded. Before long nicole spots trouble. Garrett a ski down. A guy in the water. They definitely need help. Reporter a routine wipeout leaves two more surfers in the washing machine current. Reporter garrett is going in to save a couple guys south of you, garrett. South. Hes on. Garretts got him. Reporter both are safe. With the swell now at full strength. I am going to go get big mama. Big mama. A jet ski tows mcnamara into one of the biggest waves we have seen all day. Wow, he is flying. Go go go whoa yeah was wow thats nice. Yeah, yeah. Right as i kind of started to turn the shadow came over and i was kind of standing casual and the thing hit me. Luckily i stayed up.
