Firefighters in St. Marys are sounding an alarm about the importance of working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors now that their annual door-to-door fire safety campaign is on hold due to the pandemic.
Fire Chief Richard Anderson said firefighters in St. Marys typically visit about 1,000 homes every October, a tradition that allows them to have face-to-face conversations with people about fire safety and conduct impromptu, voluntary inspections.

Last year, the department left fire safety materials at front doors instead but, after a close call in town earlier this month, Anderson and chief fire prevention officer Brian Leverton want to make sure people are still getting the message, especially since those annual inspections haven’t happened.
