With Connecticut students falling behind learning to read during COVID-19, proposed Right to Read Act seeks to help

With growing concerns about Connecticut’s achievement and opportunity gaps widening throughout the coronavirus pandemic, some educators and state lawmakers are pushing forward a bill that would help regulate how students learn to read.

“The pandemic has had this impact on all of our students, especially our students that are Black and brown,” said Middletown Superintendent of Schools Michael Conner. “We have to be able to ensure that we’re sharing and implementing best practices in accordance with the science of reading in all of our schools.”
