TALLAHASSEE, Fla.  –  For the second time this season, Florida State senior Adriaan Wildschutt was named the National Athlete of the Week for NCAA Division I Cross Country by the USTFCCCA on Monday, following his win at the Joe Piane Invitational on Friday. Wildschutt is the first in program history to win the award twice in a single season.  The Ceres, South Africa, native also earned the honor on Sept. 13 following his victory at the Covered Bridge Open.  Harry Mulenga is the only other Seminole to win the men’s weekly honor (Sept. 7, 2016). “This is an awesome honor for Adriaan,” FSU head coach Bob Braman said. “This is the biggest win of his cross country career so far and he ran one of the fastest times ever on that time-tested course at Notre Dame.” Wildschutt won his third consecutive race this season, dominating the 5-mile event with a time of 23:06.7, despite the Burke Golf Course running slow and in warm, dry, sunny conditions. In similar fashion to his win at the FSU XC Open, Wildschutt made his move around the three-mile mark. He built his lead to almost 14 seconds throughout the course of the race. He ended up winning by just under five seconds after Jonathan Davis of Illinois made a big push at the end. Wildschutt led the No. 29 Noles to a fourth place finish (204) behind No. 19 Furman (129), No. 25 Michigan (150) and No. 10 Butler (177). FSU edged out Southern Utah (207), No. 15 Alabama (225), No. 28 Weber State (227) and No. 18 Ole Miss (236). The Seminoles also finished ahead of No. 2 Notre Dame (11th, 286), No. 30 Purdue (13th, 316) and No. 26 Indiana (14th, 325). Wildschutt is the first Seminole to win three-straight invitationals since Herb Wills won three in a row in 1981, including the Metro Championship. Wills had four total wins that season, including a dual meet against Notre Dame.  He also had eight total victories throughout his career (1978-81).
