Why I suddenly care immensely about HBO Max's 'Godzilla vs. Kong'

After the "Godzilla vs. Kong" trailer dropped, the internet lit up with arguments over which monster would win the battle. My first reaction was not to pick a side, but rather to side with a genre of film that has sadly been missing over the last year: the spectacle movie.
I am glad that Twitter feels so strongly about Godzilla’s laser breath and Kong’s ability to craft a laser-deflecting club. As consequential as these powers may be for the betting odds when the movie is released on HBO Max on March 26, what’s more consequential is that this is the type of backboard-shattering, cinematic slam dunk that I need so desperately in 2021. It’s not that I’m a monster movie fanboy — the last time I was excited about a Godzilla movie, it was soundtracked by Puff Daddy. I just have no interest in contemplative films right now. All I want is a great big laser-breathing distraction.
