Who are the Karen? New Year celebrated at MVCC in Utica

To the Karen, the New Year is held to honor both the harvest and when their ancestors first migrated to their homeland in Burma. The New Year — currently 2763 — is celebrated with songs, dancing, speakers and many other shared customs. The actual day is Jan. 4, and the Karen flag was raised at Utica City Hall. The celebration was held on Saturday so that more people could attend on the weekend.
