While Oakland's 911 system was dangerously understaffed, 1,000 operator applications went unprocessed

For months, hundreds of applications arrived to the city's Human Resources department from prospective 911 dispatchers who could help speed up Oakland's notoriously slow response times to emergency calls. But between April 2022 and April 2023, those applications were all but ignored.
