Cinco de Mayo, which isn’t widely celebrated in Mexico, commemorates the Mexican Army’s 1862 victory over the French Empire in what historians call an underdog win.
In the 1960s, Mexican American civil rights activists used the day as a source of pride. Two decades later, beverage brands like Corona and Modelo launched ad campaigns targeted at Latinos.
