What Netflix's buzzy 'Bridgerton' says about race: 'We wanted this show to reflect the world'

The new period Netflix series “Bridgerton” isn’t your average historical fiction.
“We set out to create a period piece that we hadn’t seen before, and it’s certainly one I’d always wanted to see,” creator Chris Van Dusen says. “We wanted this show to reflect the world that we live in today.”
And in many ways, it does. The series, the first on Netflix from executive producer Shonda Rhimes, pushes back on traditional notions of class, race, gender and sexuality.
