We must fill labor gaps in Pennsylvania
© Provided by Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
As we rebuild from COVID-19, restaurants in Pennsylvania as well as our state’s manufacturers and even the transportation sector are having trouble finding workers. As we continue our recovery, it is imperative that we tap into available resources to fill labor gaps, including recognizing undocumented immigrants who have long supported Pennsylvania industries.
Take farming as an example. Today, immigrants make up an estimated 73% of U.S. agriculture workers — with 11% of the industry being made up of undocumented immigrants — but our nation has failed to fix immigration system issues that have resulted in decades of legal uncertainty for individuals who pay taxes and are considered essential in our COVID-19 response. In fact, more than 70,000 undocumented immigrants in Pennsylvania are essential workers, contributing millions in state and local taxes annually.
