Update 10:30 p.m.: The Washoe County School District made fewer cuts to programs for gifted programs than was first proposed earlier this year.
The school board voted to keep three school-within-a-school programs for children identified as gifted. Programs will remain at Caughlin Ranch, Roy Gomm and Hunsberger elementary schools through the next school year. The district had first proposed reducing the program to just one school.
The school board also voted to direct staff to come up with options for a regional approach to locations for the 2022-23 school year.
The school board also voted to unanimously keep four gifted programs at middle schools after proposing to reduce the locations to three. Programs at Pine, Sky Ranch and Swope will remain and the district will develop a pilot program for gifted students at Clayton Middle School.
