Reporter it played out jarringly and suddenly on thousands of tv screens this morning tuned to morning tv in roanoke virginia, and it was a devastating and jarring impact, especially for the people in the control room. Tonight the killer is dead, but the damage is done. Candles burn among the memorial tribltds in own oak at the tv station. Former tv reporter Vester Lee Flanagan fumed and brooded over his professional misfortunes and took them out on two young journalists during a live report for the station that fired him two years ago. Wards camera caught a brief glimpse of the killer, and the people realized it was the troubled reporter who went by the tv name Bryce Williams. Reporter the roanoke station was the killers last stop on a career of lost opportunities. He also worked in odessa, texas, savannah, and tallahassee it. Never worked out. He continued to use the Bryce Williams name online before and after the onair killings. He complained about his career and the victims and posted a video of the shootings on facebook. He faxed a rambling manifesto to a Network Newsroom saying equality ive been a human powder keg for a while. The sof the murders are troubling from the people who live in this community. Many feel as if they knewa, lison, they saw hoar tv every day and were her on tv every day, and were forced d to witness her murder. Eye tell you, its something i dont want to see again. Reporter flanagan drove to the airport, switched cars and was spotted driving on interstate sixtysix. He shot him as Police Closed in. Late in the day, the dead mans family issued a statement. Reporter surviving victim, vicki gardener was shot once and is recovering after an operation here. And sources tell us that Lester FlanaganVester Flanagan purchased two glock pistols and one of them was the murder weapon. Our thoughts and prayers with those families and the employees that remain there at the station. And i know that for us in this News Business we have to be respectful that they were able to focus and the strength they showed to get through this day. What was it like in that newsroom . Reporter well, very somber today, but they were working, doing their job, they were very courteous to us, but they were breaking down in tears quite frequently. And the thing that struck me was that a lot of us i worked in a station like this many years ago irk met my wife in a station like this. And it reminded me of that, and the fact these people were about the same age, beginning their careers, their relationship, just underlines the vast ocean of possibilities that was lost here.
