I stand alongside you guys and ill be marching alongside you with my wife and two children. Meanwhile, President Trump will be meeting with republican lawmakers to discuss the gun issue. A bipartisan bill is gaining momentum. But theres still a lot of disagreement when it comes to banning assault weapons. Meanwhile, gun activists are voicing against florida lawmakers for not making changes in the wake of the high school massacre. In florida, yesterday, activists shouted shame and after a state Senate Rules Committee failed to vote for a law to ban assault rifles. Now, after meeting with republicans, meanwhile, today, the white house says President Trump will meet with a Bipartisan Group of lawmakers later this week. To continue discussions on gun control. The lawyer for the armed sheriffs dispute who stoodz outside of Stoneman Douglas high school during the massacre now says that the officer is no coward. The attorney for Scot Peterson said he thought the shooting was happening outside the building and he followed protocol by taking up a tactical position. Peterson resigned after the sheriff suspended him. Yesterday President Trump said it was disgusting that the deputy didnt go into the school. And a 15yearold bringing a gun to school is facing charges. The student tried to pass through a metal detector, s sam Fields High School in north philadelphia. No one was hurt. New details about a hitandrun that injured an 8yearold girl in camden. They say the driver was speeding last tuesday and hit the child, as she tried to cross the corner of the street at ferry avenue and phillips street. The 8yearold was treated and leased. The vehicle is a charcoal fourdoor sedan, possibly a ford fusion. If you have information, police would like to hear from you. And pulaski denies trading city contracts for campaign donations. His defense rested yesterday after prosecutors wrapped up their examination. The case could go to the jury by tomorrow. For the second time, bill cosby is mourning the loss of a child. New this morning, parking rules in philadelphia. The Parking Authority wants bus drivers to help catch drivers who are blocking their path. It turns out more and more drivers are disregarding signs like this where it says no stopping, bus only. Now, to fight this problem, the Parking Authority is considering teaming up with septa. The idea is to use cameras that are already mounted to the front of septa buses. And with a click of a finger, the septa bus driver can snap a picture of a camera of a vehicle illegally parked. You could be slapped with a 76 fine. I just spoke with a woman who rides the bus regularly. She tells me she feels unsafe because cars often park where bus us need to stop. It is a good idea because it makes it more safer for the rider to get on and off. Its scary, really, because cars can pull up here and hit you while youre trying to get on the bus. Reporter now, this happens so often in philadelphia, the city Parking Authority estimates that it would generate more than 10 million a year from this initiative alone. Reporter but Sloan Stevens now has hunter. Her retirement looks a lot different. Hunter was played with her as a foster child four years ago. The challenges were not new to phyllis who had been a longtime Foster Parent especially to special needs children. Before hunter, phyllis and her husband have five grown kids. Their daughter alex is among the four they adopted. As hunter came around, phyllis was a little rusty. I didnt know life came in numbers, i thought they were small, medium and large. Reporter for 30 years, an advocate for Foster Parents we first met her strategizing with caseworkers abdomen how to improve the system. She said partnerships are key to the abuse and neglect many that the 5,000 foster children endure. Because of my caseworker stepped up and gave me the tools i need. Reporter most foster children return to their biological families but that was not possible for hunter. He eventually became child number six in the steffens family. And they wouldnt have it any other way. We cant imagine life without him. We need more team like phyllis to help out foster the 5,000, 6,000 kids in philadelphia that need homes. Its just temporary, it may be a day or two or a couple months. Right, we want to find families to open their hearts and their homes. That delay there, traffic slowly trying to get by here. We see a little delay on the eastbound side as well. Another disabled vehicle on the opposite side approaching the vine street expressway. Starting up at 36 degrees in philadelphia. It might come down another degree before it starts moving up and low 50s at lunchtime. The winds will be shifting today, too. Thats an important change. Stopping and causing the southbound moving this way again, through westchester towards delaware. If youre heading in that direction, youll see delays there. And even through this northbound side. Actually through this light area that you have, where traffic cant make a lefthand turn or get through this intersection in through here. Theyre blocking that left lane and every once in a while, we see slow traffic moving through the scene. A little bit of a backup as well. Also watching a disabled vehicle on the westbound side of the vine street expressway, approaching the schuylkill and a disabled truck actually on the eastbound side of the schuylkill expressway coming towards the vine. So, we are seeing in delays. And im going to check in quickly with the schuylkill expressway drive times because the eastbound is starting to see delay. 26 minutes from the blue route to the vine. And speeds are down into the 20s already. 6 32 right now. Students in one Camden County high school are planning to walk out this morning, to protest a teachers suspension for questioning safety at the school. Nbc10s matt delucia is outside of cherry hill east for more with the students concerns and the possible punishment, they say. Matt, tell us more. Reporter right, tracy, some of the students here at cherry hill east that they may face suspension for supporting the teacher who was suspended. Last night, there was a meeting for parents and students concerned. They met with the superintendent of the Cherry Hill School district. The issue in question is over a history teacher who was suspended for making remarks about what he called a lack of security. Quite a few students have come to his defense. And yesterday morning, some of them gathered in the auditorium. And followed that up with a petition that went around gathering about 500 signatures in support. Parents we spoke with last night say they, too, want Better School security, and theyre going to support their sons and daughters who intend to take a stand. If they get suspended, i support them because this is for what they believe in. And if they dont speak their mind now and then they grow up and go into the workplace or whatever it is in life, and they need to be able to speak their own mind, what are we teaching them if they cant speak their mind now . Reporter and i was just talking with a parent of a student here a couple minutes ago. Who says that she is equally concerned about what is going on here and. Situation that has unfolded. Last night, the superintendent said that he could not comment on the teachers suspension. And the day after the parkland shooting down in florida, the cherry hill superintendent did send out a letter to students and parents saying that safety and security is the primary focus of responsibility. And that anyone who has concerns should address them with the principal or the superintendent directly. Live in cherry hill, matt delucia, nbc10 news. In a related story, dozens of colleges with peaceful protests against gun violence will not hurt their chance of getting in. Those schools include, the university of pennsylvania, temple and penn state. In delaware county, a downed power line stopped an amtrak train in its tracks and trapped 50 people on board. After it left the station in philadelphia. Crews shut down power to get passengers off that train safely. And now to an nbc10 exclusive. Three Camden County Police Officers are on desk duty after a violent encounter with a man caught on video. We do want to warn you, the video is disturbing. Prosecutors are investigating what youre about to see. Nbc10 shows an officer knocking down edward arella. Hes still recovering from the encounter on collins road last thursday. The 32yearold father says he did nothing wrong. And the video shows that. I didnt resist. I didnt do nothing. He need more social skills or more trained. Listen, the video i think it speaks for itself. Its very disturbing. We have concerns with it. And officers were responding to a tip call about someone with a gun at that location. When they got there, the man matched that exact description and the car that was there. Were told that the officer in question was wearing a body camera and it was working. 6 36, 36 degrees outside. And stories making headlines county by county. We begin with an update of the tunnel, the ntsb expects to finish its investigation and could issue a preliminary report within a month. The portion of the tunnel fell through the mans truck and killed him. Its the only tunnel in the turnpike system that has electrical piping directly above drivers instead of in a parallel tunnel. In glou chester county, a teacher may face charges in a deadly hitandrun in washington township. Nicholas dunn is accused of falling asleep at the wheel and leaving the scene of a deadly crash. Police say he hit and killed the woman as she walked to a bus stop on route 422. State troopers believe they stopped a dogfighting ring. An officer stopped molina and found an injured dog in his car. That gave troopers cause to search the home when they found dog treadmills, guns and the spca has considered putting the dogs up for adoption. The city is working to renovate wood lawn park, cool spring and tilton park. The first of the sessions takes place this afternoon at wood lawn library. Yeah, jessica, i dont see any movement there. Looks like its stopped . Yeah, so there is a light here. Part of it is that. Part of it is theyre letting one lane by. On westchester, southbound, matlack street. Im seeing a vehicle involved here in the righthand shoulder moving around so they may be getting it out of the way. Or at least getting it off further to the shoulder which will open up this delay right here. And the lefthand lane, that turn area of the northbound side, but its not really causing any major delays as it was. Again, through the intersection, not too bad there. You can see the lights there as well. Looks like maybe two lanes starting to get by through the intersection. Thats a good thing on the southbound side. Theres a new crash in hourhrsh on welsh road. And an accident there with a truck involved on the eastbound of the schuylkill. Coming into the vine, all clear. And you can see the delay is pretty much gone. But were seeing a delay on the westbound side of the vine. But we still have that here for the schuylkill. Almost backed up the entire length of the screen there where it gets slow. And off here, delays for septas route 10 trollies in both directions because of a disabled bus blocking part of the tracks. Back to you, guys.
