It is monday morning, president s day back home, 7 00 a. M. Here in pyeongchang, south korea, it is 9 00 at night. Were kicking off our second week at the Winter Olympics. And our crowd is still flying high. Our crowd is flying high. Theyre in for a great show. Rachel platten is going to sing. I just saw adam rippon in the green room. We have all of the olympic highlights coming up in a bit. Well start with the news. The top story, the fallout from the president s twitter tirade over the weekend, ripping everyone except for russia in the wake of stunning, new docume indictments in the wake of russian meddling. We have two reports now and well start at the white house with kristen welker. Good morning to you. Reporter good morning to you. The president is pointing the finger of blame at just about everyone except Vladimir Putin and moscow, after special Counsel Robert Mueller indicted 13 russian officials and 3 businesses last week. The kremlin is calling the allegations unfair and baseless. And now, a number of the president s critics are accusing mr. Trump of failing to stand up to russia. This morning, new signs the president s frustrations with the russia probe are boiling over, after special Counsel Robert Mueller charged 13 russians with engineering a massive social media and Field Operations campaign aimed at meddling in the 2016 election. Over the weekend, the president played the blame game, lashing out in a tweet storm, to president obama. And at the fbi, for missing signals sent out by the Florida School shooting. Accusing the agency of spending too much time to prove russian collusion with the trump campaign. There is no collusion, he wrote. And in one stunning tweet, the president writing, they are laughing their asses off in moscow. The president s critics slamming him for not calling out the interference itself. The indictment is not only a indictment of the russian figures involved, its an indictment of the inaction of this administration. Reporter the republicans recognizing the enormity of the incident. Russia is not our friend. This is his job. This is what we wanted him to do. Reporter all weekend, the president was on defense, denying he ever absolved russia of meddling in the election. The president has frequently cast county on whether russia meddled. I believe that president putin really feels and he feels strongly, that he did not meddle in our election. That was a democrat hoax. It was an exclues for losing the election. Reporter the president undercutting his National Security adviser, after h. R. Mcmaster said on saturday you see with the fbi indictment, the evidence is now really incontrovertible and available in the public domain. Reporter the president firing back. General mcmaster forgot to say that the results of the 2016 election were not impacted or changed by the russians. While its true the indictment does not say that russia changed the outcome of the election, american intelligence officials have said they have no way of calculating the effect of the interference. Now, the president was up and tweeting overnight, not about the russia probe, but about oprah. Almost baiting her to challenge him in 2020. Tweeting, just watched a very insecure Oprah Winfrey, who at one point i knew well, interviewed a panel on 60 minutes. The panel was slanted and biased. Hope oprah runs so she can be defeated just like the others. Theres been speculation about whether Oprah Winfrey would run for president after she gave that speech at the golden globes. But oprah said she is not interested. As for the president , he returns from maralago later today. Savannah . Kristen, back to russias attack on the u. S. Is the Trump Administration planning to do anything about it . Reporter thats the key question. So far, the president has shown little appetite for retaliating against russia. Mr. Trump didnt mention rhe retribution or sanctions in his tweet storm. So far, the Trump Administration has not imposed sanctions against russia. The only robust sanctions that have been implemented against russia was under president obama. Rex tillerson did say that the administration is evaluating possible sanctions for individuals. Many democrats and republicans say this administration isnt being tough enough against russia. The critics say, the root of the problem is that the president takes personally the issue of russian meddling. He sees it as a tool that democrats are trying to delegitimize his victory. And that, critics charge, may be clouding his judgment. Kristen welker, thank you. The president s words are adding fuel to a growing call of action from survivors of the Florida School shooting. We are learning more about the confessed gunmans past and about missed warning signs. Gabe gut rierrez is in parkland. Reporter whats different in the after math of this shooting, is that were hearing a loud voice from student survivors. Theyre upset with missed warning signs and frustrated with politicians over what they see as inaction. Douglas strong. Reporter anger is boiling over in the wake of the latest school matssacre. Were not shy. Reporter teenagers born after the 1999 columbine shooting, calling for tougher gun laws and a march on washington. Were not going to let the 17 bullets we just took take us down. Were going to keep running and lead the rest of the nation behind us. They say that tougher gun laws do not decrease gun violence. We call b. S. Reporter survivors frustrated with missed warnings signs in nick cruzs troubled past. He was a nice kid when he was nice. Until he would lose his temper. Then, he would just be crazy for a little while. Reporter a 2016 state report obtained by nbc news, Mental Health counselors found that cruz was depressed and cut himself. Mr. Cruz stated he is going to buy a gun. His mother told counselors he suffered from adhd and his recent depression was from a breakup. The state concluded that since cruz resides with his mother and receives inhome Mental Health services, no other referrals or services were needed. Do you think the state should have done more . As for the medal count this morning, norway still leading on a record pace, by the way, for overall medals at the Winter Olympics. Team usa is in sixth place overall. Heading into these games, one of the big storylines was the doping scandal that led to russias ban. But the ioc allowed some russian athletes to compete. And now one of them, a medal winner, has reportedly failed a doping test. Stephanie gosk has the latest. Reporter good morning. When you think of doping, you dont think about curling as a sport that comes to mind. This morning, its at the center of a brewing scandal and so are the russians. This married couped pulled off a third place finish in mixed curling. After the competition, they said they were proud to have won russias first medal in the sport. Celebrating at the team house, the couple were greeted as heroes, signing o ining autogra fans. All of that came crashing down. The investigation thon doping tested him positive for a drug that can boost stamina. The sample will be tested twice to be certain. The Russian Curling Federation told the a. P. That he tested careen as early as january 22nd. And someone, perhaps a rival on his own team, may have spiked his food during training camp. The International Olympic committee had suspended the russian team from these games after finding it guilty of systemic doping. Those allowed to compete are referred to as the olympic athletes from russia. We caught up with Matt Hamilton from the u. S. Team, who beat the russians in a match during mixed curling. How does doping potentially give you an edge in curling . If youre strong and have endurance, you can sweep longer and harder. You have more margin for error when shooting. Better sweepers you have, the bigger window you have to miss. Reporter hamilton and his sister finished seventh overall. Its a little different than like crosscountry or something where youreoing full bore. You dont always need your brute strength. It stinks. Im a little put out that someone would do it. It was a great start to the ice dancing competition for team usa, with three teams in the top seven heading into tonights finals. And we were there. Overnight, team usa was back on the ice, showing off style and grace. All three pairs of ice dancers turning in some showstopping performances. Led by u. S. National champions, Madison Hubbell and zachary donoh donohue. You looked like you were having fun. Thats what i told her. Reporter evan bates and Madison Chock also dazzling the crowd. Youve had a rollercoaster olympics . Definitely. The last few days have been an emotional rollercoaster. I hit rockbottom with both Short Programs. The long program was the highest of the high in my competitive career. Its been incredible. Im happy i was able to lay that down here. We were there during your program. And al, savannah and i, i dont know if they were the loudest and most obnoxious people. In case you missed us, i want to give you a taste of what it sounded like. Are you ready . Woo. Woo. Yes. Yay. That was before secure took us out. I heard you guys. What was so awesome, nathan, first of all, i know you were thinking of doing five quads. You decided at the last second to do six. You didnt talk to your coach. You decided you were going to throw down. After the Short Program, i fell so much, i had nothing to lose heading into the long program. And i figured this would be the best opportunity to try Something Like this, something a little crazy. But again, i had nothing to lose. And i wanted to test myself. Im glad i chose to do that. Had you done the six quads in practice . You knew you could . I attempted it in practice and it was neverthis was the mo had ever been. Go big or go home. When you look at your olympic experience, how would you describe it . It was a rollercoaster. Im so glad i pushed through. Both Short Programs were really awful. To bounce back within 24 hours, im really proud of that. When you think about it, Scott Hamilton was here. He said, you know, nathan showed he actually was human. He watches you. He says you never, never, never mess up. When you look at it now, do you think it was nerves, like all that scrutiny and the spotlight . That did play a role. I was focused on medals. I was cautious and timid. Thats not the way to compete. I took all of that weight off of my shoulder and allowed myself to enjoy my experience at the olympics, enjoy my performance for the people. And you guys, i heard you guys, everybody in the crowd and everybody that sent me a message. Are you going to join us in beijing . Thats the goal. You had us on our feet and in tears. Really proud. But to really put all of the pressure on myself and leave it all down to the third run was something that i wasnt lplannig on. But it worked out. What was in your head at the beginning of the third run . You knew it was now or never. My olympics came down to one run, that final run. I put immense pressure on myself. Focused on visualizing and the practice i had put in. And it worked out for me. You look bronze in sochi. And one of the things you talked about a lot, is after that, feeling a little lost and battling some depression and some substance abuse. What have you learned through that . Youre talking about it publicly because you want to help other. Absolutely. I dealt with personal issues after the sochi olympics. Like all high achievers, theres low lows that accompany the high highs. I didnt have the coping mechanisms in place to deal with that. I was able to get some help from myself and come back from that strong. And to be happy and healthy is a dream come true now. A lot of help came from your adorable family, who, by the way, we rolled up. They were on the other side of the barricade. We said, wait a second. This is your family. They all came in. Jon lillis and his two brothers started doing daredevil tricks at bristol mountain, near their hometown of rochester, new york. For 15 years, the oldest jon dreamed of being here at the olympics. But it didnt happen any way that they planned. Jon lillis twisted and looped his way to nearly winning a medal for the usa. Thats how you get into the top six right there. Huge. Reporter his family, so proud. In the end, he didnt medal. Going to get a deduction there. Reporter but just having the strength to be here was a big victory. Jon was 8 when he started jumping. At 14, a coach asked him to move to lake placid. Do we want him to be 30 years old and think, i could have been something . And so, we figured, wed let him try it. Reporter mikey and chris followed their big brother into aerials. Their mom and dad moved to a smaller house to pay for the boys training. Last fall, you had three skiers. The older two wanted to go to the olympics. We were sitting pretty. Jon had just won the championship. Reporter one morning last october, jamie realized, middle brother, mikey, hadnt woken up yet. I went to the bottom of the stairs and yelled up to him. He didnt answer, which is unusual because he was a pretty light sleeper. And i went up the stairs and i knew, as i hit the landing, something was really wrong. And i knew immediately when i went into his room. And i called 911. And i called my sister. And i just said, i need you. Reporter mikey died in his sleep. They say they still dont know why. Went from on top of the world to about as bad as you can get. Reporter in his grief, jon kept jumping. When he didnt feel like doing another jump, he would hear his brother say, get up there. Reporter jon made the olympic team and a hash tag was born, jumpingformikey. The rochester community, rallying to support the family. During the olympics, jon wore his brother mikeys jumping suit. Its the closest thing i could have to keep him with me. Reporter little brother, chris, is hoping to join jon at the next olympics in beijing. The lillis family is already planning that trip. I think when youre having tough times in your life, its important to find that ladder that helps you climb out. Reporter its obviously so bittersweet for them. They were hoping all three would be together at the olympics in beijing. But dad, bernie, says mikey will be there, too, guiding from above. Guys . Absolutely. Kate, thank you so much. Were so happy to have jon with us now. Good to see you. I cant imagine how you did that. Here at the olympics, it requires everything athlet athletically. I know your heart is heavy. How has it been . How are you handling this . Its bittersweet. Everything i do here is in honor of my brother, for the last four months. Its been a tough road. Qualifying for the olympics is not easy. Its something that takes a lot of work, not only for the ten years beforehand, but just going into it and the competitions going into it. Its such a strong group of athletes competing for these spots. So, i had to kind of put a little bit of the emotion aside and just do it for him and use that kind of as a guide and a little extra steam to go out and push as hard as i could. What do you think he would have thought . Im watching you up in the air, wearing his suit. What do you think your brother would have thought in that moment . I think he would have thought it was the coolest thing ever. He was a superfan as well as an athlete. I think all athletes are. If you compete at a high level, you have to love the sport that youre involved in, whatever it may be. But just seeing my brother, chris face and knowing how much fun he was having, i think that mikey would have thought the world of it and being here and seeing everything going on, i think he would have thought it was a cool scene. Reporte your folks are here. You have a special tribute youre wearing to mikey. You want to tell us about it . I had this idea when they nominated the olympic team. I was like, chris still has a chance. I would say hell probably be in beijing. He tore his acl. But hes such a strong competitor and a strong athlete, i cant see it happening again. Mikey will never have that chance to represent the country and walk in the opening ceremonies. So, i asked my parents, i said, how can i bring him with me . Would you be okay if i carried his ashes in the opening ceremony. As we got into the details of it, theyre like, that might not be the best thing. Youre standing around for a while. Youre corralled with your country. I wouldnt want it to be knocked over or broken. There was a local artist in rochester, where im from. And he wrote my mom a message, and offered to make a glass pendant with his ashes in it. Thats what i wore in the opening ceremony. You have honored him in so many ways. We hope to see you and your brother in beijing in four years. Are you up for it . Im up for it. Theres nothing more that i love than coming out and doing this and representing our country.
