Weve issued a first alert because of the conditions. Meteorologist krystal klei is tracking heavy rain for our sunday this morning. Good morning, krystal. Guys, we warned about this yesterday. We said heavy rain would be moving through, particularly saturday night into sunday morning. We saw it overnight. We had a first alert we issued yesterday in effect through now for fill fphiladelphia, suburbsh jersey. Were expecting that that heavy rain and flooding threat is going to be lifted. Rain totals by the end of this. 2 to 3 inches. A few spots more than 3 inches are likely. M mainly, urban and stream flooding. On doppler radar, wide picture that weve got. Theres rain across the entire area. But the areas in yellow and orange were focusing in on. Thats the higher rain rate. Thats a heavier rain and that means its going to start collecting on areas, roadways under this path. Down to ocean city and Atlantic City, those are the areas where were looking at the heavy rain falling. Cumberland into Atlantic County. This is an yar that already saw 1 to 2 inches of rain faux. Heavier rain moving out of philadelphia. In portions of bucks county, Mercer County and burlington. Trenton, a spot we will watch as roadways and the streams and rivers may be impacted as the rain continues to generate. As for temperatures, really mild air continuing to move in from the south. Right now, warm front lingering in the southern edge of our viewing zone. That will continue to drive north the next few hours and continues to impact how much rain we see and how warm we get. Well talk more about that neighborhood to neighborhood in a few minutes. Thats the good thing. At least its warm out there. The fog making it difficult to drive this morning, especially on some back roads where you can barely see in front of you. The rain is really starting to come down in jersey toward the ben franklin bridge in camden, new jersey. We are also seeing a pretty dense fog causing a lot of issues this morning. You can especially, as we head over the bridge, the fog was much worse in pennsylvania than in south jersey. I want to show you one of the first accidents were already seeing this morning. This was on i76 westbound just underneath that overpass at 30th street station. According to Pennsylvania State police, there were two Chain Reaction crashes, a number of vehicles involved. We saw cars into the side of the median. State police just told us that that crash is now clear. None of the drivers involved had any serious injuries. Its the combination of that heavy rain as well as the fog thats going to cause a tricky commute this morning. The worst of that rain still not here. Were heading to 95 next and expecting the stornl m to pass the 95 corridor. It could get tricky there. Right now, a lot of rain and dense fog approaching sunrise this morning. Corrections officers calling for better security at a philadelphia jail. Police say this inmate just released from the current correctional facility attacked a guard who was leaving work. Investigators say 45 minutes after the jail released jamaal bennett, he confronted corrections officer Michael Marte in the parking lot and tried to steal his car. He shot him and is expected to survive. The Union Representing the guards say they deserve better protection. They shouldnt feel they have to be harassed or threatened. Im responsible for them. When we see theres a situation that presents itself and were able to correct it and address it, we do. Corrections officials will add officers for security in the current parking lot during all shift changes. 6 06 right now on this sunday. This morning, a father from south jersey is accused of abusing his infant son to death and then lying about it. According to police, jose rojas of Hamilton Township called 911 and reported his 4 month old son fell off a bed. The boy later died at the hospital. Doctors say the injuries of the child are so significant that only a fall from at least 30 feet could have caused them. Doctors believe the boy died from abusive head trauma. Hes charged with manslaughter, assault and endangering the welfare of a child. A man was arrested who tried to set a Police Station on fire. You may remember back in december, this is when we first reported this. Surveillance video captured a man at the Police Department and throwing a bottle of flammable liquid at the door much the bottle shattered but the liquid never caught fire. After weeks of investigating, detectives have identified the suspect as shawn shearer. Police have taken him into custody. Pennsylvanias Republican Party is backing candidates for statewide races who closely identify with President Trump. At the state gop meeting yesterday, they endorse gubernatorial candidate scott wagner and u. S. Senate candidate bore let a. Both men will be on the ballot in the primary. Weve got warm, moist air surging in. We have a lot of moisture from yesterday. So youre going to get very foggy conditions for the morning. Even in the afternoon, i think youll have lingering fog, low clouds issues with visibility. Because this thing is huge. I mean, were going from philadelphia all the way down to the gulf coast before you see the end of this storm system. Whats happening is a warm front is trying to move into place today. Thats going to help trigger more showers that are heavier in nature. Its also going to potentially trigger a few spot thunderstorms even as we get into the later parts of the day. Weve got that flood watch in place. This is from lehigh valley, berks county down the jersey shore and over to kent county. Only spot thats not included in our neighborhood is suffolk county, delaware. This is areas where flooding is possible. So far, we havent received many flood reports, which is good. There are no warnings in place indicate thag it was actually occurring. Weve seen a lot of rain already. Yesterdays rainfall totals. An inch in millville and dover. Nearly half an inch in philadelphia. Now add on to that what weve seen so far today. Huge. Were topping around an inch today in dover and Atlantic City. Also rain coming down which limits visibility as well. You mix this together, this is not a great driving day. If you can stay indoors, thats the best option. Look at doppler radar, weve got these areas of yellow, these are pockets of the heavier rain moving in. Some of the worst rain is still falling over parts of maryland moving our direction. I do expect it will get here over the next couple of hours. And that area of heavy rain that mostly sat about here overnight is starting to move northward, which means, yeah, the corridor, a good portion of the viewers, this is going to be during the Morning Hours when you get the heavier rain. Lets look at the pockets of heavy rain starting to fall. From wilmington, you see that. Westchester to coatsville, this isnt the heaviest stuff. It was worse overnight. Nonetheless, pockets of heavy rain. It gets worse into kent county here. Smyrna to dover to river view to milford. Unfortunately, this is an area where amounts between 1 and 2 inches have fallen. I looked in the dover area for the official reports, it looks like its under 2 inches now. These are high amounts, certainly can trigger flooding. The good news is that areas in southern half of our viewing zone have higher flood guidance. Meaning more rain needs to fall in a shorter amount of time for flooding to occur. Not that much we need for flooding to occur. Its better its falling in these zones so far. Farther along into new jersey, you see that weve got another pocket of heavy rain to the north out of Atlantic County and this is up near ship bottom beach haven as well. Mercer county, trenton, hasnt seen heavy rain. Its weakened into central parts of new jersey. Lets look forward to the hour by hour model. Tighten to our neck of the woods, the heavier rain scatters northwa northward. Watch the temperatures, too. Whats going to happen, a worm front slowly creeping across our zone is going to start really making its way through. Thats going to bump these temperatures up. Through 10 00 a. M. , still pockets of heavy rain, really aligning with the i95 corridor. Things will weaken a tad as we get between noon and 1 00 p. M. I believe. Well still have a light to steady rain. Scattered pockets of heavier rain and an isolated thunderstorm is possible through 4 00 p. M. Everything starts to weaken overnight. 8 00 at night, light rain showers. But it does not look like well have anything as impressive as we are going to have through the Morning Hours. Look at this trend in temperatures. From 20s in new york to nearly 70 degrees in norfolk. Were in the middle of this. The warm air saah helping the boundary that fires off the heavier area of rain. Thats what the issue is. Weave got that first alert in effect for heavy rain that may lead to flooding across the region. South jersey and northern delaware are the locations were concerned about. Now through 5 00 tonight. Although, if some of these streams or rivers really starts to pick up, then this may have to be extended into later parts of the evening. Rain totals, 2 to 3 inches. A few spots, particularly over kent, cumberland and Atlantic County may see well over 3 inches by the final totals. Those locations have already seen 2 inches just since yesterday and overnight. Also you can see a few spots under storms late morning into the afternoon and urban and stream flooding is possible with all of this rain moving through. This is the system that never ends. The rain started yesterday and its still going strong on the board right now. The areas in yellows and orange are the heaviest. D. C. To baltimore, just getting pounded right now. Thats moving our direction. In fact, its starting to spread into parts of kept and middletown, smyrna, dover. These are areas that have gotten a good bit of rain overnight and are hit hard ts morning. If you can avoid driving in these zones, this is hard enough that its difficult to drive. Visibility on the windshield is tough. Its a steady rain in north town, and abington, steady rain this. Its been going on for so long that all of the totals are impressive. In the hour by hour model, a couple hours in, the heavier rain starts to shift north. Well track this out for you and talk about the totals in a bit. New this morning, police in Chester County are looking to determine if weather played a part in a deadly crash. It happened just before midnight at Pottstown Pike and grove road in goshen. In all, four cars were involved. Two people died at the scene. Rescuers took an injured person to Chester County hospital. Wet and slippery conditions caused a car to overturn on i76 this morning. One of our Traffic Cameras captured the scene on the eastbound ramp. The driver got herself out of the car. State police say she did not need medical attention. We are seeing a lot of heavy rain starting to move into the area. Its going to track along the i95 corridor. The worst in washington, d. C. Into maryland and delaware and eventually into fill fi. We fill philadelphia. Live look at i95. If you look at the lights, you can see the fog. Thats the real issue were dealing with right now. A light, medium rain starts to fall down. Were already seeing accidents, too. Two accidents on 76 to talk about, including one under the 30th street station underpass. A Chain Reaction crash. A number of vehicles involved according to state police. Another accident 76 eastbound near the roosevelt boulevard exit. So early this morning, not much traffic, but were already seeing a few incidents pile up. As we get later into the day, as the heavy rain still comes down, thats what the concern is going to be. Because of the increased potency of the drug, authorities are urging people to call 911 immediately if somebody overdoses. More developments in the opioid epidemic. The new Jersey Company that makes the prescription painkiller oxycontin says it will Start Marketing opioid drugs to doctors. This after being slapped with a number of lawsuits. Purdue pharma is in middlesex county. Its facing a number of lawsuits that accuse the drug manufacturer of contributing to the countrys opioid problem. Last year, oxycontin sales for perdue reached 2 billion. They started selling the drug in 1995. The company billed it as a nonaddictive time release pill for chronic pain. You cant see anything but a few lights glowing because we have low clouds and very dense fog in place across the region. The two combined making it very hard to see anything. Take a look at the visibility on the board here. Its improved in areas south. Thats because the heaviest rain has weakened a tad. 2. 5 miles in millville. Only a half inch in northeast philadelphia. You can still drive in halfmile visibility but its much more difficult. So take it slow this morning. If you can wait, the fog wont be as dense in the next several hours. On radar and satellite, look how big this is. Rain is steadily falling over our region. This extends all the way down to the gulf coast. This is a very, very large system. Its going to provide us with rain for the rest of the day. As a result of that, considering that weve already seen rain total amounts between half an inch and 2 inches in our region, were under a flood watch for the entire area. Berks county down to the jersey shore and extending into kent county. Weve seen reports of 2 inches there. Around half an inch to an inch more may fall today. Look at philadelphia, reporting rain currently. At 49 degrees. Winds may pick up in the afternoon to gusts 25 to 30 miles per hour. The focus, though, is going to be the periods of heavy rain through lunchtime. Steady rain into the afternoon. And temperatures in the afternoon will press into the low 60s. Rain started yesterday well into today and foggy. Just not a good day to be on the roads. You can see it on this picture, broad street and center city. A little bit of a mess heading out the door. Krystal klei is tracking the conditions for us. Not just because this is an extended period of time that were seeing rain. But that were getting pockets of heavy rain. On the roadways, there will be ponding that makes it slick or tricky to drive. In some spots, the ground is saturated, meaning flooding can starts to occur. On doppler radar, what we see is rare yas of very heavy rain that are starting to exit maryland and enter parts of delaware, Chester County and soon enough parts of new jersey into philadelphia. Lets take a closer look at the areas seeing the heaviest rain. Just short of wilmington and all the way through middletown, you are seeing the yellows, oranges, reds returning on radar. That is indicative of very heavy rain, a steadier rainfall rate. In fact, enough so that we get worried about flood concerns, particularly in the lowlying areas or floodprone. If theres one area that floods out in your house, thats probably going to happen this morning. This is extending into cumberland county. This extends to vineland and lower to the creek. Farther to the south, if youre scat a few scattered, 2 inches of rain so far and more to come. Jumping over the bay to laurel lake, Cape May County getting the heavier stuff. In philadelphia, not as heavy. More of a steady rain. Its picked up in, say, 30 minutes ago or so. Heavier rain in berks county as well. Amounts are pretty low. About quarter of an inch to half an inch in lehigh valley. Thats an area not hit as much thus far. Lets zoom into the hour by hour model and see what were talking about in terms of when the heaviest stuff strikes. This is just updated. Its really blowing up the radar. This might be a little too extreme. But i would not be surprised if there are pockets that look like this. Meaning the reds, yellows. This is going to be key too. A warm front will move along from south to north. Thats going to surge in warmer air. That warmer air, combining with colder air, 30s in the poconos, it fires off the heavier rain storms, even an isolated thunderstorm. The i95 corridor, its going to continue through the Morning Hours.
