Postal Service Forces anyone sending care packages to troops from our area to pay more. Thats not sitting well with some nonprofits. Nbcs mitch blocker has the story. The stress and the strain of war is something retired air force Lieutenant Colonel sally stin ton says never gets easy. Take its a morale booster. When youre in a combat zone, two very important things are mail and food. When you got this box, you got both of them. Stinton never heard of operation Yellow Ribbon until she received a care package. The experience metropolitan so much to her that when she retired from service, she started volunteering for the new jersey nonprofit. To know that people care about you that will never meet you and never know you but they know what youre going through and they want to help you and boost your morale. The small operation making a big impression on our servicemen and women, sending girl scout cookies, locally made jerky and toiletries. Its our little way of saying thank you, youre not forgotten. Heres a hug in a box. But the cost just went up due to a change in postage rates. The United States post office, our shipping rates surprisingly to us unannounced doubled. Now they have to pay 60 to ship one. They ship 150 boxes to our troops each month. It makes us either think how were going to do things Going Forward or reducing the amount of u. S. Service members we touch with our care packages. The Postal Service declined to speak with us but says quote, changes are being made to reduce costs and remain competitive in the marketplace. The usps says in an effort to better serve the military, it consolidated military package operations to chicago instead of multiple hubs. Now locations closer to chicago might be cheaper than a care package sent from other areas, including ours were literally reducing the ability of nonprofits on the east coast to boost morale of the very people that protect and provide our freedom. Im mitch blocker, nbc 10 news. U. S. Congressman Tom Macarthur from new jersey doesnt like whats happening either. Hes sent letters to leaders at the post office and to Congress Asking for costs to be lowered. All right. We are looking at Doppler Radar right now because this is where all the action is. The heaviest rains are yellows, oranges and reds. Theres a good bit of it to the southwest starting to pump our direction. Now were starting to see small pockets in Montgomery County and into philadelphia as well. These Little Pockets are going to start expanding as the area over d. C. And baltimore moves our direction. Look at parts of newcastle county, north star, pensville, to middletown. Scattered areas of rain moving through. The problem is, when training, regeneration of heavy pockets over and over the same area, thats when you get the flooding concerns. This is something well be watching during the Morning Hours. No flood warnings in place, which indicates its actually occurring. I wouldnt be surprised if there were ponding along roadways. We jump over the delaware and parts of Cumberland County where still heavy rain is falling. This is an area where 1 to 2 inches fell overnight. This is an area totally saturated and more heavy rains continuing to fall. Look how much ive got to pull this out to show you the length of the rain going on here. Were talking from the gulf coast up to our neck of the woods. This is 1200 miles to us. Theres a steady rain the entire line. This is not some small system. This is a massive storm thats moving through. On our hour by hour model, the rain is moving by. This has done a good job to show you where its sitting. It will start wedging to the north. Whats going to happen, warm air surging from the south in the form of a warm front. Thats where its doing a weird thing. Once the warm front moves north of the i95 corridor, the heaviest storms will align with that. Thats when really warm air surges in. Watch the temperatures here. We continue with pockets of heavy rain near the Corridor North and west up to reading and allentown through 10 00 a. M. It will weaken past noontime. I think around 1 00 or so is when we still have rain but not as heavy. Look at these temperatures. This model is going 630 along the i95 corridor. Way warmer than average. About 20 degrees warmer than average at 1 00 p. M. Continue with the rain through 4 00. Little pockets of heavier rain are possible. Not as impressive as it is during the Morning Hours. The rain weakens into the overnight. Still very, very mild temperatures on the board here. Now were going to expand the hour by hour to longterm models. This is showing overnight by monday morning. I think a few lingering showers in the delaware beaches, jersey shore zone is possible. This model reflects that into the afternoon as well. Monday is fairly dry. Not saturated from the rain. This is what were looking at in terms of totals here. Areas south, 1 to 2 inches of rain overnight. Still 2. 5 to 3 inches for totals. Totals will be around 2 inches in philadelphia by the time everything is said and done. Currently, only around half an inch. Still an inch and a half to go before we max out. My hand kind of got stuck into my leg. But i think it was the impact of the knee on the floor, instead of twisting it, which is good.
