Stream live so congrats to logan paul on no longer being the worst thing on youtube. [ audience ohs ] [ laughter ] massachusetts representative joe kennedy delivered the democratic response to President Trumps state of the Union Address tonight, where he made many great points like, what you say, bro, and youre not better than me [ light laughter ] Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer today published an oped in the Washington Post titled, what im listening for in trumps state of the union. And at the top of the list, the sound of a womans shoe tapping out s. O. S. [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] oh. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was not at President Trumps state of the Union Address tonight. Though, to be fair, she wasnt really at obamas either. [ laughter and applause ] White House Press secretary Sarah Huckabee sanders said yesterday that no one cares about the russia investigation. What . Everyone cares about it. This investigation is like the kardashians of current events. We watch every time theyre on tv. We follow them all on social media. Hell, Robert Mueller just released his own fragrance. [ laughter and applause ] it was announced yesterday that tom hanks will play mr. Rogers in a new biopic titled you are my friend. And about half the men in hollywood have already been playing mr. Mcfeely. [ audience ohs ] [ applause ] it was reported this week that the department of education will launch a Pilot Program that puts students federal aid money on to debit cards so officials can monitor how students spend excess money from loans. Though if you really want to know how they spend it just go to a dorm and inhale. [ light laughter ] according to new research, some scientists are claiming that naked mole rats theoretically, dont have a defined life span and can live without showing the effects of aging. Though you can usually tell the older ones because they wear toupees. [ light laughter ] my favorite joke of the day, you know . [ light laughter ] we live in a crazy upside down world and sometimes you just got to throw a wig on a mole. [ light laughter ] and finally, President Trump plans to ignore a new sanctions law aimed to punish russia for meddling in our election, despite the fact that Congress Passed the law 5175, which brings us to a segment called hey. [ cheers and applause ] seth hey, man, are you trying to look guilty . At this point you couldnt be any more obvious if you started the state of the union with my fellow russians. [ light laughter ] if you were a spy your code name would be big fat spy. [ light laughter ] if youre going to be an evil villain, be slick about it. Dont walk around dressed like retired darth vader. [ light laughter ] also, do you really think putin is going stop meddling in our business . He interfered in our election with incredible ease and unimaginable success. Hes not going to retire at the top of his game and walk away like peyton manning. Because Vladimir Putin is not charismatic enough to do nationwide commercials. [ light laughter ] nation wide is on your side. [ light laughter ] so it would be grave mistake for you to choose state farm. [ light laughter ] and, hey, republicans, why are you sticking with this guy anyway . Youve got your tax cuts. That was the game, youre done. Youre like the guy who hangs around after the Bachelor Party and asks the stripper to go steady. [ light laughter ] and hey, trump, where did you get the idea that you can just pick which bills you enforce . Did you watch schoolhouse rock backwards . [ light laughter ] congress voted for this 5175, you couldnt get that kind of bipartisan agreement on a bill that proclaims puppies are cute. Because i guarantee there are at least six members of congress who thinks that if they say puppies are cute, it will lead to human puppy marriage. [ light laughter ] so President Trump, let me tell you something, a lot of women have no doubt told you over the years. You cant just do whatever you want. People are always saying, oh its not fair to compare trump to an authoritarian leader. But man, if it walks like a duck and it talks like a duck, its a ducktator. Before we get to all of that, we dont always have enough time to cover all of the recent news. So here with a recap is one of our writers, amber ruffin in a segment we call amber says what. [ cheers and applause ] you guys, things have been crazy. Okay. First of all, the president was, like, african countries are [ bleep ] holes, and i was, like, what . [ light laughter ] then, that idiot paid a porn star hush money. And i was, like, what . [ laughter ] but then he asked the guggenheim to borrow a van gogh, and instead they offered him a gold toilet. And i was like [ laughter ] what . [ laughter and applause ] then, something terrifying happened. A rat took a shower and someone recorded it. [ laughter and applause ] i saw that and was, like, what kind of living nightmare is this . [ light laughter ] i wanted to die because its a rat, but i wanted it to live as an example to all rats for what they could achieve. [ light laughter ] then i heard about these videos that are popular in china where kids say a line from the tv show riverdale, karmas a bitch and get an instant makeover. I was, like, what . But then i saw one. Karmas a bitch. And i was like, what . [ laughter ] this it is my new favorite thing. [ light laughter ] then, for a second, people thought oprah was going to run for president. And i was like, what . [ light laughter ] and she was like, what . And we were, like, what . And she was like, what . And we were, like, what . And she was, like, no. [ laughter ] then, congresswoman Frederica Wilson said that she would not attend trumps state of the Union Address. And i was, like, whats so crazy about that . [ light laughter ] but everyone else saw it and was, like, what is she wearing . [ laughter ] and i was like, whats wrong with dressing like a sexy cowgirl . I wish i looked like that. Oh, and this weekend at the grammys, despacito did not win song of the year. And i was like, que . [ speaking Foreign Language ] [ light laughter ] then to make myself feel better, i watched another karmas a bitch video. [ light laughter ] karmas a bitch. I was, like, what . [ laughter ] then nintendo announced their new labo, which is a piece of cardboard you fold your dang self and use like a controller. And saw that and was, like, what kind of stupid is that . And how much does it cost . [ laughter ] then, i found out black panther is set to break box office records. And i was, like, what . [ cheers and applause ] oh what did you think would happen when black people finally got a superhero movie . [ cheers and applause ] a bunch of people screamed. I assumed they were black. They are not, good on you. [ laughter and applause ] black people were like what time does it start . What theater is it at and what am i going to wear . [ laughter ] and then i heard there was going to be a mamma mia 2. And i was, like, mamma mia, and what, what, what, what, what . [ light laughter ] what what, what what what what what what. What, what what what what then i was, like, you know what . I love those karma is a bitch videos so much, i should make one of my own. So here it goes. Karmas a bitch. [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] seth thanks, amber. Well be right back with Glenn Howerton [ cheers and applause ] bibs on people lobsterfest is back at red lobster. You know our first guest tonight from his work on its always sunny in philadelphia, he stars in the new Comedy Series a. P. Bio, you can catch a special preview thursday night at 9 30 here on nbc. Lets take a look. My name is jack griffin. And i dont want to be here. I am an Award Winning philosophy scholar who for reasons i wont go into, finds himself with a free year, so im living in my dead moms apartment here in toledo while killing a little bit of time teaching advanced placement biology. So, heres the deal, i do not care about biology. Were not going to do any biology in here. And to be perfectly clear, this wont be one of those things where over the course of a year i secretly teach it to you. This also wont be one of those things where i end up learning more from you than you do from me. I know more than all of you combined, so that doesnt make any sense. Im going to spend the majority of my time mentally breaking my nemesis with the ultimate goal of taking his job as the head of stanford, philosophy, and then im going to have sex with as many women as i possibly can throughout the entire state of california. [ cheers and applause ] seth please welcome to the show Glenn Howerton, everyone [ cheers and applause ] seth welcome to the show im wearing a suit. Seth youre wearing a suit, you look very dapper. Thank you. Seth but i want to ask about this because you did a very nonsuit activity recently. You went to a survival what is it called . A Survival Training camp . Yes. We did not wear suits. Seth yeah, i would imagine. Youre right, it was a wilderness survival retreat. Seth okay, a weekend . Two days . A day . It was a threeday course where me and my friends learned how to survive in the wilderness without the things that you normally have on hand. Seth what brought this about as something you wanted to do . Um [ light laughter ] living in california i realized i live very near where a lot of earthquakes there could be a big earthquake, things could fall down, lots of things. I guess i was dipping my toes into doomsday prepping. Seth okay gotcha. A little bit, if you will seth just a little toe dip. And after the three days do you feel better about your familys chances . No. Seth okay. Im now actually wilderness first aid certified. Seth oh thats pretty good. Yeah. Seth yeah. [ cheers and applause ] now a lot of people dont know this, but to be wilderness first aid certified youre not actually really supposed to treat the person. Youre just supposed to keep them alive seth okay. Until somebody who actually knows something shows up. [ light laughter ] so a lot of its really just like hey, im here. Im here. Im here for you. You know what i mean. Seth like stay with me, that kind of thing . Yes, yeah, yeah, yeah, stay with me. Seth oh, gotcha. [ laughter ] dont you dont you leave me yeah, dont you die on me, you son of a bitch. Seth yeah, dont you die, oh, thats a good one. You son of a bitch. Right. Yeah, that kind of thing until the chopper shows up, and then youre, like, im out of here. Seth wow. But yeah, no i guess i just felt like, i wanted to make sure that i knew how to do basic things that seth yes. We got so comfortable in society. You know, we have running water, and i didnt realize, you know, ask a lot of people, like whats the first thing that will kill you if youre lost in the wilderness, and youre injured. And most people say well, well youll youll run out of water. Youll be very, very thirsty, and youll die of whatever thats called, when you die of not having enough water. [ light laughter ] and its actually exposure. Seth just to to the elements. Seth to the elements. Yeah. So, if you sleep on the ground, and, you know, its warm outside, if it gets cold at night, youll die because the ground will freeze you to death. So youve got to build like a thing, and put and put leaves in there. Seth wow you know what i mean . And so, but youll die later of lyme disease, because theres ticks in the leaves. [ laughter ] seth but youll buy yourself a couple of days. Youll buy yourself a couple and then a life of misery, and suffering from lyme disease. But yeah, in the meantime seth you i think you and i are very similar cause well first, congratulations, always sunny, 12 seasons, which is like, no one does that. [ cheers and applause ] ive also been working in tv for a while now, and do you think that you now officially because i feel this way. I officially dont know how to do anything of value. Like of reallife value. Oh, i see. Yeah, you get comfortable, right . Seth yeah. Yeah, i think thats true. Seth were you ever handy . Were you ever somebody who could fix something in your house . My yeah. Yes, absolutely. Yeah, like i had to cut the grass. I had to trim the hedges, and i had to fix stuff around the but my dad didnt teach me a ton of stuff. You know, even though he kind of knew how to do that stuff, i think he wanted to like, i dont know, shelter us from it. Not make us have to do that. I had to learn when i was in theatre school, i had to learn stagecraft, so i learned how to use some tools, and i would fix things in the house when they got broken. You know, but yeah, you do. You get comfortable, and after while you realize, like, i dont want to do that, im going to hire somebody to do it. Seth yeah. The most depressing thing in my life is my wifes dad is, like, a builder, and her brother knows everything, and so when something breaks in our house its really emasculating because one of them shows up with a tool belt, and is like hey, what are you doing . Im like, let me put down this xbox controller, and pretend to see what youre seeing. [ laughter ] yeah, i can tell you how to fix chapped lips. Seth oh yeah. But seth everybody says that about you [ light laughter ] but i cant teach you how to fix, you know, a light switch. Seth yeah. No, its sad. You sort of forget to i mean, you can i think to a certain degree, we all suffer from this. But if you start to make a little bit of dough, you start to realize, im going to pay a guy to do that. Ill pay a guy to do this, and im worried that im not going to teach my kids, because i have two boys. Seth yeah. You know, and like i said, i used to cut the grass, and all that. Im like, i dont want them cutting my grass, because i dont want them messing up my grass. [ laughter ] you know . Whereas like, my dad was like, youre cutting the grass. Seth yeah. And im like seth i also just worry about how my dad knows a lot about everything. Yeah, same. Seth and now i just feel like, because of the internet, anything my kid asks me, ill be like, lets go over to the laptop. [ laughter ] yeah, the box of knowledge. Seth thats a good question, yeah. Lets go to the box of knowledge. Seth this is where daddy put all his ideas. [ light laughter ] yeah, and take credit for it. Seth yeah, and now we can go find them. I built this box of knowledge for you son, so that when i pass on its like superman and his dad, he was like the crystal thing seth right. So this show a. P. Bio, full disclosure, because i love this show, but i am one of the producers on this show, and [ cheers and applause ] im so happy that you are playing this role. You are playing a teacher who we sort of set it up in the clip, but you are not a good person. Would you say thats accurate on the show . Yeah. I would say thats pretty accurate, or at least im trying not to be a good person. I think the secret sauce to the show is that he is extremely selfish, and narcissistic, but ultimately, and i think the creator, mike obrien seth yes, a fantastic writer. Hes amazing, he was on snl for six years as a writer. And hes created a character who puts on this front of being extremely selfish and narcissistic, but i think under it all there is some heart there, but yeah, he basically goes into classes and says, im not going to teach you anything. You know, this is a free period for you, and if you do what i tell you to do, and dont try to make me teach you biology, then im going to give you all an a. Which i think is to most classes that would be like a sweet deal, but these kids, and this is part of what makes the show so different, is these kids actually want to learn something, and thats a problem for me. Seth yeah. [ light laughter ] i dont want to have to do work. Seth you offer them advil, or tylenol pm, you actually give them a chance to just take a pill, and fall asleep for an hour. [ laughter ] yeah, its basically what you would want your teachers to do when you were in school, but not these kids. Seth did you have important teachers in your life . Were you someone who [ laughter ] hmm. [ light laughter ] important teachers . Seth yeah, that sent you on your path . I mean, you ended up going to juilliard i did. Seth so obviously something happened in high school that made you think, oh, i should be an actor. Yeah, i wouldnt say i didnt have any like, lean on me type teachers. Any stand by mes. Seth you didnt have a lean on me or a stand by me . [ laughter ] i had no one by me, basically. I didnt have any teachers who like, turned my life around, or anything like that. But, no i tell you, there there was this one teacher that i loved, and he was my Health Teacher. I think his name was coach scott cause he was also the football coach. Seth yeah. The Health Teacher is never just the Health Teacher. Hes always something else. Seth i think my Health Teacher was also our football coach. Yeah, yeah, i dont know. Yeah, i dont get that, really. I think he was like the offensive line coach, but also the Health Teacher, because i mean, who better to teach you about you know, your budding human sexuality than an obese High School Alabama football coach. [ laughter ] no, hes the one you want teaching you about your body, and all of the feelings, youre feeling. Seth i feel like back in the day Health Teacher was a different thing. It was like who knows how to do squats . But then it became more about like sex ed, and it took a while for people to adjust as to who should be the better teacher there. Yeah, and it seems like thats based on where you are in the country right . Because in alabama, its like, we have to talk about sex, but we really dont want to talk about sex, but we should, but we cant, and we will. So listening to this man try to explain the secondary sex characteristics of a female is very uncomfortable. Seth so but you had a very interesting upbringing. Your dad was in the air force, so you traveled all around the world. Yeah. Seth and then ended up in high school in alabama. What was by the time you got to high school was your international experience, did that make you ready for an American High School, or not ready for an American High School . No, not i would say not ready. Seth yeah, okay. I mean i cause most of the schools id gone to were they were like they were military schools. So other kids were always coming in, and everybody was, like, hey, and welcoming each other, but when i moved to alabama everybody had been there, and grown up together. So you know, i just felt like a real dork. You know, i was like hey, nice to meet everybody, and everyone was, like, no, who are you . Like, get out of here. Seth did you at least like was it true you were in korea for a while . Yeah. Seth so, did you at least know what american pop culture was, or american style . We had like one american station on the tv so i knew jeopardy, and cartoons. [ laughter ] but no, i mean my parents were, first of all theyre not i love them, theyre such wonderful, wonderful people, but they werent, like, hip. You know what i mean . So they were like going and my moms so cheap. So we would go to this korean market called itaewon and she would buy us like the cheapest knockoff like, members only. The velcro sneakers, so basically when i showed up to school in alabama, everyone had like there whatever was cool in alabama, their polo shirts, and i had like, a guy on the horse, but it wasnt seth right. It wasnt the right guy. [ laughter ] he wasnt playing polo. I dont know what he was doing. He was playing a different sport. Seth it was a weird horse. It was a weird horse, it didnt have four legs, it had like three legs. cause they you know, cause of copyright things. So yeah, i was wearing clothes from like a different decade. It was bad. Seth thats fantastic. Im glad everything worked out for you, and you found a place where youre comfortable, and happy. The woods. In the woods. [ light laughter ] seth where you can survive in the woods. Thats right. Seth thanks so much for being here. Im so excited for the show, and i am so happy to be working with you. [ cheers and applause ] Glenn Howerton, everybody. Check out a special preview of a. P. Bio thursday night at 9 30 here on nbc. Well be right back with common. He recently received an Academy Award nomination for his song stand up for something from the film marshall. He also appears in the chi which airs sunday nights on showtime. Lets take a look. Assalamu alaikum, brother. Oh, now same to you. Something on your mind . Lost my gold chain the other night. Adornments of gold is just conveniences of present life. Yeah, whatever. It took me 12 years in statesville to find my way to allah. We all walk in different speeds. Sooner or later you catch your breath. The door is always open. My name is rafik. Ronnie. Good to meet you, brother. Seth please welcome back to the show, common, everyone [ cheers and applause ] seth welcome back how are you doing . Seth im doing very well. Congratulations on your Academy Award nomination. Very exciting. Thank you. Its such a blessing, man. I mean seth yeah. My mother my mother said, like, can you believe it . A little black boy from the south side of chicago is nominated for an oscar . I said, man. That is an amazing journey. [ cheers and applause ] seth its great. And its not happening on its own. You were also nominated for a grammy. So you were there last sunday . How was that . Did you are you nervous on a day where youre nominated . Well, yeah. You know, its, like, unfortunately and fortunately, they announced our award pretelecast so we already knew we lost. We lost, so so i kind of got to enjoy the seth right. Event, like, i mean i saw this incredible performance by kendrick lamar. Seth its amazing. You know, it was beautiful. Even watching bruno mars and cardi b was fun. And just seeing jayz and the guys that i really love and care about as artists and as people, like naz and jayz around just enjoying the grammys. It was fun. But i it was another one of those moments, because i pulled up when i pulled up to Madison Square garden i was thinking, like, i used to watch the grammys. I used to see Michael Jackson and never think that i could attend that event. You know what i mean . Seth yeah. Yeah, its incredible. Seth well its incred i mean, just the fact that youre having all of these happening one after the other. [ cheers and applause ] its like, im at the grammys. Im at the oscars. Its really exciting. You know, you talked about the people from your era. The guys you came up with. Jayz and naz. I always love hearing when people help out younger unknown artists. And you this was a photo you posted of you and chance the rapper when he was in snl. [ cheers ] he looks a lot older there. Hes actually younger than you. Yeah, just a little bit. Yeah. Seth but you is it true that you your grandmother and chances grandmother are friends . Yeah, yeah. Well, yeah. They are they were friends ill say that because chances grandmother has passed, god bless her soul. But, so my grandmother and chances grandmother were friends and my grandmother said hey rashid, i need you to call and leave a message. My friends grandson, hes a rapper. And this is this is like, ten years ago. So chance had to be, like, in high school. So i ended up calling him. You got to do what your grandmother says. Seth yeah, of course. So i you know, and my grandmother is known for calling me, saying, say hi to this person. Do this. So i had to do it. I called seth its very nice that you still answer when she calls. Thats very nice. I better. But so, yeah. I called chances phone. I didnt know he was chance the rapper. At that point i dont even know if his name was chance the rapper. But, i left a message for him. He didnt answer the call. Seth yeah. So i left the message. An inspirational message telling him to pursue his dream and do it. And then i met him eight years later. He said, you know, our grandmothers are friends and you left a message on my phone. Ill never forget that. I said what . Seth wow. That was you . That was incredible. And this dude went on to win grammys and be one of the biggest rappers out there. Seth well, good for you, man. That is such a nice thing such a nice way to pay it forward like that. Its great. Would you do that for an up and coming comedian . Seth no. [ laughter ] i cant stress how busy i am. Just i just dont have the time. And then, you know, im on a very limited minutes plan. [ laughter ] so i want to talk about the chi. This is a fantastic show that was created by lena waithe, whos an emmyAward Winning writer on master of none. And how did this show come to be . How did it come about . Well, she created it because she said, she saw a lot of reports about chicago. And the statistics that was happening with the murder rates. And she realized that people werent looking at us as human beings. The life that was being talked about was not looked at as like, oh these are human beings dying. And this and this is not only the side of what chicago is, is violence. So it sparked a thought in her mind. Shes a creative person. Beautiful writer. And she she wrote the pilot for the chi. And as producers, freedom road and my company, we heard about the script. It had a real big buzz. And we came on as producers. And it was like it was just the right alignment for me. Me being from chicago. Me always wanting to tell that story about human life and just life being round. Not just onesided. And thats what she was able to show. Seth its wonderful. Youre obviously, we saw from the clip. Youre in it as well. When you decide to be in a project like this, do you go at it with a very specific, i want to play a character like this. Or i want to bring this experience. Either my own personal or people i knew from that, you know part of the country that maybe other people dont know that much about . Well, yeah. You know, they said, you know, do you want to do a character on it . And i was like, yeah. If the characters right. And they wrote this character named rafik who was a muslim brother who was from the streets and then, you know, went to prison and has changed his life. And i really definitely know human beings who have been through that transition. In fact, ive been working with something called imagine justice where we go into prisons and talk to individuals and see what programs. And ive met some of the most enlightened human beings in prison. So, to be able to play this character and just be a voice for people who are usually unheard was really an honor for me. You know, im super grateful to be a part of it as a producer. But also to be a voice for the people who across all america who dont usually get heard. Seth you have so much going on. Its so impressive. You have a new group called August Greene. Yeah. Seth tell us a little bit about that. So August Greene consists of myself, a pianist, producer named Robert Glasper and producer drummer named karriem riggins. Were a group thats like the music is very progressive and soulful and forward. But its just free music. We just had a gig at the high line the other day. And it was fun. Dave chappelle came out and gave us a little honor honorary introduction. So it was fun. Seth have you known those guys for a long time . Like, when you start a group like that, are they people youve met recently or yeah. Ive known those guys for a long time. Actually Robert Glasper was teaching me piano. But im not a good pianist so he had i had to give that up. But [ light laughter ] seth well, maybe hes just a bad teacher. [ laughter ] lets put it at that. Rob, youre a bad teacher, man. Seth also, i want to ask you, it strikes me that youve become fairly political politically active. Is that something that youve seen coming for a long time . Is there a reason that its increased in recent years . Yeah, you know i seth, i have to say, initially i was like i was always feeling, like, socially conscious and aware of helping the community. But as far as politics and that world and policy change, it really shifted when i became a part of selma. The movie selma was like, i learned what people had to do to change laws and it was, like, wow i need to put my energy towards that all this Creative Energy and all the things that i do on the daily, i want to put some of that towards bettering our world and bettering human beings. And thats even, honestly, what were talking on the song stand up for something. Its about everybody being empowered to do something good. To be a better human being and better the world. So ive got to be active as you know with all of this going on, and i thank you for saying what you say about this administration. And i thank you for speaking up. [ cheers and applause ] and it certainly boils down to it certainly boils down to what all is going on in the world with people feeling like so nervous and fearful about things. We got to, like, empower ourselves to know that we are in control of our destinies as a country, as a whole. And being active is one of those ways to connect that, so i thank you for using your platform. Im trying to use my platform. And i know everybody at home is doing theirs. Seth well thank you for your words. Thank you for your art. And congratulations and good luck. Thank you. Seth common everybody the chi airs sunday nights on showtime. Well be right back with Chloe Benjamin everyone. [ cheers and applause ] seth our next guest is a talented New York Times bestselling author whose second novel the immortalist was published earlier this month. Please welcome to the show, Chloe Benjamin, everyone. [ cheers and applause ] seth welcome to the show. Thank you so much seth congratulations on this book. I loved reading it, but also congratulations, i got to say you were a New York Times bestselling author. This is very new business. Very new. Seth this just happened. Yeah, like two weeks ago. Seth as of two weeks ago this book debuted at number seven, thats amazing, are you worried people will treat you differently now that youre a New York Times bestselling author . I dont know. I mean this is different. Seth yeah thats true. You know, i wasnt here last week. Seth thats true, i will not have worstselling authors on the show. [ laughter ] i thought you would have me regardless. I was like hes going to be there for me no matter what. Seth thats true, if you hadnt broken the top ten we would have called, and said, were not doing a show tonight. Yeah. [ light laughter ] yeah, you know, in some ways it is life changing. It cant not be, but in others, you know i fly back to madison, wisconsin, tomorrow. [ cheers ] seth there we go. Woohoo, some madisonites all right. Seth some madisonites. You know, and my cat, and my husband, and i write in my bathrobe, and you know, thats going to be the same. Seth okay, gotcha. Get a slightly nicer bathrobe. Treat yourself. So there is a very gripping premise to this book, which is four siblings at a very young age go see a psychic, a fortune teller, and all find out the dates of their death, what brought you to this idea which is, like i said, a very gripping idea for a book. Well, i always say that i wish i had a good fortune teller story of my own, but it really just comes out of my neurosis. My dad was like, dont say that on live tv, but i feel like we all have them. Seth sure. You know, nobody knows what happens when you die, and i think to some extent were all kind of fascinated by it, and so im somebody who has always struggled with uncertainty, and for me the book is about coping with uncertainty, and kind of watching these four case studies, as they try to figure out whether knowledge is helpful, or harmful. Seth but you, you said you dont have a good fortune teller story, does that mean youve never gone to one . No. Seth would you . Im too superstitious, cant you tell . Seth yes. Yeah. Seth i will say you dont make a great case for knowing. I know. I know right. I know. [ light laughter ] have you . Have you been . Seth no, i wouldnt want to either, for the same reason. I would be too superstitious, and i would spend a lot of time which is what the characters in this book do, trying to decide is this something that im going to accept as a real thing, or is this something that im going to argue is a crazy thing to be focusing on . Yeah. Seth so i would not want to put myself in that position, as well. You, again, we find out this information about the characters, and then you we sort of follow each of them independently, we go through the sequence. Is that how you wrote . Did you start with the beginning, and kind of just go through in order . I did. I did. So, youre right. Theres four siblings, and each of them have their own part of the novel so in some ways, its kind of like four novellas in one. I think i like writing in the order that it appears in the book, because it Gains Momentum and themes as it goes along, and also structure for me is really helpful because writing a novel is terrifying. Like no matter you know. I mean, you know. Seth i dont know, but its terrifying. [ light laughter ] the reason i know is cause im terrified, yeah. Its really scary so having boundaries is great. So i knew, okay, four sections, roughly the same amount of pages in each section, i want an arc for each section, and arc for the whole, and so it was really like a coping mechanism. Seth because you would sit down, and be like, im writing four little books. Yeah, its nothing. Its like totally easy. Seth do you show it to people that you trust over the process of writing it . Very few. For this book i tried to push it on my husband constantly, and he was like, no. No. You need to wait like, lets until youre done, cause hes a great editor, and you know, weve stayed married so somehow thats worked. So i showed it to him, i showed it to my agent, a couple of trusted readers. But no, for the most part its really private, and then, its, like, mom and dad, theres all this gay sex in this book, enjoy. [ laughter ] thats what ive been working on for three years. Seth yeah, i was going to say, do you mentioned your husband is a great editor, your parents obviously, if youre showing them this book, you must be close. Are they a good audience . Are they a supportive audience . They are. Theyre so proud, and theyre so excited. We have a group text right now, theyve been like freaking out. Like, my mom is like, im laughing and crying right now. Seth oh, thats fantastic right now. Seth oh, good. Good, yeah. Theyre ecstatic, and theyve always been so supportive, i have a really big modern family. I have two sets of parents, one gay, and one straight, and two brothers, and step parents, and so everybodys, yeah. Everybodys onboard. Seth you, now some writers would say theyre not the kind to read reviews. I believe that half of them are lying. Are you do you read your reviews . Yeah. Well you should never you know, do that, so i do it all of the time. [ laughter ] seth sure. Yeah, i read everything. Like, everything i can find. Well, i will say this, after you do all that work writing something, at the very least you want to be, like, all right now you assholes write something, and let me read that. [ laughter ] well, its like, you spend so much time with this thing by yourself, and at least i am longing to know how its received out in the world, but its hard. I mean, its not always a good idea, and i know people who dont read any of their reviews, which i think is amazing. Seth yeah. I just yeah, i couldnt do that. Seth you have a favorite review. Yeah. Seth and this is really fantastic. Yeah. Seth so this is where was this that you read this . So this is on goodreads, which is a book review website, and this was a review from my first book, and i just ive always remembered it, you know. Seth its very concise, you know . Yeah. Seth and some people i think when they sit down to write a yelp review, they go really long. Yeah. Seth this person really went right at it. Yeah. Seth and they wrote, its a three star review, and said was going to be a two, but got a bit better. Yeah. [ laughter ] so i i figured i really stuck the landing. Seth yeah. I mean i was, like, when did that change . Seth also, i mean a tip of a cap to whoever did this because they really, they were just going to plow through a twostar book yeah, oh i know. Seth and then what a great reward for them. They were like i cant im so im committed, im a hundred. This is a great experience for everyone. Seth everybody won. Yeah. I also like that a correct use of a period over an exclamation part, thats definitely, you dont want to be like, i got a bit better yeah, woohoo seth it was just like, just very flat, it got a bit better. Yeah, she kept it real, yeah. Seth im looking forward to what jessica has to say about the immortalist. Oh, i know. Seth im really hoping we get it up to three and a half, or four. I mean, well see. Yeah, we dont want it to be like, it was going be a three, but got a bit worse. Seth yeah. Thats true. Thank you so much for being here. Thank you. Thank you so much. Congratulations on the book.
