Beyond the big speech, Big Questions remain about how and if President Trump will face special Counsel Robert Mueller himself for an interview. The president s attorneys could try to negotiate a time limit but i imagine that bob mueller would want as much time as possible. Reporter and theres also news from the Republican National committee a friend of the president , steve wynn has resigned from his position as finance chairman of the rnc after media reports of Sexual Misconduct allegations against wynn. The wall street journal reported on a settlement paid by wynn to an employee who complained wynn pressured her to have sex. Chuck todd is nbcs political director and moderator of meet the press. Lets work backwards and get us up to the state of the union and talk first about President Trump and what was reported first in the new york city, later confirmed by nbc news that back in june he ordered the firing of special Counsel Robert Mueller but was stopped by his own white House Counsel. You heard him call it fake news. I was surprised i got less push back from the white house privately than we usually get. What do you think the impact on the news is . Reporter two intriguing aspects to the story. Why were the same source denying to us in june and july that the president did order this now say, well, yeah he did. We stopped him. Why that difference now . Is this a trial balloon . Is this a red flare warning sign hes thinking about it again . Why now . Why is this being so easily confirm out of the white house. I think that in itself is intriguing. What about the republican reaction . In june when he was only thinking about it on capitol hill it was swift, with warnings to the president not to do it. This time it looks a little muted which tells me this campaign to undermine the investigators that the allies of a been conducted maybe its having an impact. Well certainly hear about immigration in the state of the union. The opening bid, if you want to indicate, the white house framework for immigration deal was put out on thursday. The president wants 25 billion. He wants it for the wall. He wants to change the visa lottery system. That in exchange for daca protections. Is there a deal somewhere . Something democrats could live with in there . Reporter im wondering. It looks like a pretty reasonable opening bid from the white house and in the old rules of washington you could see how a little bit of horse trading from here or there should get him there. Im wonder if the extreme ways that the Political Base has now reacted to legislation makes it impossible to get this kind of compromise . If the base of the Democratic Party cant they dont want if the changes in the Legal Immigration system are too much for them do they walk away and kill this deal or what about on the right . Do they walk away . Too many people on the president s right say in the house who dont like the amnesty portion of this. What i dont know has our polarized politics changed things that what looks like a meeting somewhere in the middle, center left or center right is impossible to find any more. Like democrats wouldnt give him his wall even at the expense of daca protections. So that brings us to tuesday night and the state of the union. We heard the president in davos this week touting his first year, america is open for business. Thinking back to his inaugural address, very dark. What do you expect to see on tuesday . Reporter i aspect him to sell his tax plan a lot. Which in his mind the biggest achievement hes got so far and frankly something he hasnt done a lot of. This is an opportune, you get anywhere 30 million to 50 million of people to tune in. This is certainly an opportune for the president to message. But ask yourself in the era of trump, does a big speech like the state of the union have any legs any more . Will it have any Lasting Impact beyond the 12 hour news cycle that were on these days of stories. You realize its been less than a week since the government was shut down. So ask yourself if this state of the union is good. Will we even be talking about it on wednesday afternoon . The old news cycles do not apply in the last year, year and a half. The eight minute performance set the arena and stapletons career on fire. His debut album traveller rocketed to the top of the charts with sales growing 6,000 after the show. Stapleton won three cma awards that night. Three months later he added a pair of grammys. Did it feel in the moment like something magical was happening . I knew we were going to have fun. Two guys that wouldnt seem like they would go together at all find a place to live together. That stage was a long way from stapletons Humble Beginnings. He grew up the son of a cool miner in a small town in eastern kentucky. Avenues musician, Football Player and va elel valecdorian high school class. You brought up lets write it friday, you know at 6 00. I dont know. I think maybe we wrote half a song. Maybe. And left when the sun came up. On saturday. I mean that thing went on. We went to dinner. Yeah, we went to dinner. Stapleton played in a couple of bands in nashville but his solo career almost ended before it began. In 2013 his first single didnt do much business. And the album it came from was scrapped by his record label. But a road trip with morgan after his fathers death that same year was the inspiration for stapletons break out 2015 album traveller. Iand it was morgan who has always believed chris talent would be recognized even when chris wasnt so sure. One day, one day the world will know. Its been very satisfying to see the world wake up. Can you put your finger on it, morgan, what is so unique and special about him . Hes genuine. Its authentic. Whatever makeup he has for writing a song or singing a song or playing a show, it just takes him over and its him completely. And it outshines the sun in a lot of ways to me. They have two young children, with twins on the way. Ready for twins, chris oh, yeah. I think i laughed for about 20 minutes straight when they told us. Up laughed . Laughed out of shock. I was just like i didnt know what else to do. Not a laugh he giggled. He like giggled for 25 minutes. I was in shock. Thats the word. Tonight stapleton is up for three more Grammy Awards, including best country album for the chart topper. The followup from aroom volume 2 was released in december. Theres happier moments on this record than hopefully it feels this record feels more hopeful than some of the other records have. For all the awards and accolades Chris Stapleton has received over the last two years or so, i got the only approval he needed from his dad before he passed away. I know he was a big fan of yours. I guess he said i took alan jackson out and put you in. Yeah. That was the highiest compliment. Thats the highest compliment i ever got from dad. The only other compliment i took Merle Haggard out. Never got that one. But at the time he had Alan Jacksons greatest hits in the cd player for a long time. When he moved alan jackson out and put me in that was the highiest compliment he could give.
