From a hit man to a gang, investigators say they have solved the mystery surrounding the murder of a beloved radio host. They now say april kauffmans husband was behind the plot to have her killed. Nbc10s matt delucia joins us live at the Atlantic CountyProsecutors Office where they made all the announcements yesterday. Walk us through the reason investigators say she was murdered. Reporter well, april kauffmans family waited 5. 5 years for the news that came yesterday. Firstdegree murder charges against kauffmans husband and an associate of his. Both are charged with the killing of the jersey shore radio host, april kauffman. She was found shot to death in her home in may of 2012. Yesterday the Atlantic County prosecutor laid out the grim details of what really happened here. Dr. James kauffman hired a hit man to kill his wife because she threatened to divorce him and expose his drug empire, one that involved issuing prescriptions of painkillers to people sent by a man who was a member of the pagans motorcycle gang. The hired hit man, by the way, prosecutors say was named frank mulholla mulholland. He died in 2013. April kauffmans daughter says she always had suspicions of her stepfather, and now there are answers for her and her own children. My 11yearold was very close to my mom. And you know, he is in middle school. Totally gets it. And after watching the press conference, i got a huge squeeze from him, he said, you know what, mimis happy. Reporter Atlantic County prosecutors say these eight people are connected to the murder in some fashion. Six charged with racketeering while kauffman and his partner faced firstdegree murder charges. Reporter good morning, santa ana, california, has been hammered. First wildfires, now heavy rain leading to tremendous mudslides. Montecito, california, is one of the hardest hit areas. You see the mud running down the hill. A massive muddy runoff sent mud and debris slamming into homes. So far, 13 people have died, and Officials Say crews have rescued at least 50 people by helicopter from their rooftops, and dozens more have been helped to the ground. More than five inches fell in the burn area of the socalled thomas fire. That actually burned 285,000 acres. A family of five including a baby and dog were among those rescued from their home where it was filled with four feet of mud. I was seeing everybody walk around in the mud, people on the roof and them carrying the newborn up on to the roof. Reporter a mudcovered 14yearold girl was also rescued, pulled from her collapsed home where she had been trapped for hours. Fortunately she is going to be okay. The death toll stands at 13.
