This is nbc 10 news today. Im lauren mayk. And im dray clark. Were in the midst of another deep freeze. Temperatures are brutal. So definitely dress in layers whether youre going to the parade or just doing things with family. Lets get over to tammie souza. You know, this is a roller coaster weve been rising but it does not peak at 40 or 50 degrees, it is stuck in the teens and 20s. And that is the case all week. So we are still under a first alert for dangerous kofld. That is through 8 00 tomorrow morning. If you are going out this morning, if you dont have to go out, i wouldnt. But if you are, make sure you cover everything. Face, fingers, hands. Well have temperatures in the teens and 20s with a windchill between 0 and minus 10. So that is dangerously cold. Limit the time outside. Give special care to your pets because they are certainly not used to this type of weather just like us. And then well be watching a coastal storm wednesday into thursday, we may get a little light snow depending on how close this tracks to us, we could be looking at possibly some shoveling snow. So this bears watching. It will mainly be affecting thursday. And that is just something that well keep a close eye on. Look at the wide view, i dont typically go this wide, but 6 below in chicago. Pittsburgh, 1. 9 in philadelphia. So there is no warmth headed our way from the west. Usually you see that, but that is not the case. Lets take a look at some of your neighborhoods. 6 in allentown on, 9 in dover. 7 at mt. Holly. 11 in wildwood. 8 in Atlantic City right now. So nothing warm out there. And the feels like, it feels like 4 below in philadelphia, 7 below in allentown, wilmington at 6 below, millville at 3 below. Only the upper teens today. So again, we need to bundle up. Probably get those cars warmed up as well. Yeah, that is probabiliis pr to be hardest spot is getting to your car. Do want to talk about this accident though. Roosevelt boulevard, seeing a little bit of improvement. Earlier all lanes were blocked, but now the right lane is getting by. This is northbound between schuylkill expressway and roberts avenue. Two on were transported to the hospital. Several vehicles were involve and some closures around the area as a result. This is the eastbound ramp from the schuylkill expressway that takes you to the boulevard. You can see police have closed that down right now. They are not allowing traffic to get through as they try to clear the accident. Westbound offramp to the boulevard, though, that is now reopened. So again, just a slight bit of improvement. Also watching Hazardous Conditions on the roadway in whitpain township at morris road and east butler pike. The show must go on. The mummers will be braving the cold as they plan to continue their new years day parade. Concerns about the dangerous temperatures had some calling for it to be postponed. Matt delucia is joining us live from along the parade route. Matt, organizers are taking extra steps to keep warm and really anyone going out there should. Reporter right, and happy new year to you. Of course it is a new years tradition to have the mummers parade here in philadelphia. And you talked a little bit about the vote that they had over the weekend. And Division Leaders voted in favor of having the parade today rather than postponing to later on for this weekend. So they will go on today as scheduled even though it is cold and it is very cold. It can be dangerous if you are out here for long periods of time and you dont layer up as tammie said, you really do need to take those precautions. Were right by 16th and market streets here, you see some of the vans pulling up. Some of the cars. And just behind that, you see some of the floats that are getting ready for this parade. They will be moving past city ha hall down broad street over to washington avenue. So there will be a busy day ahead and you have the string bands, the fancy brigades, everybody prepares for this one day. They spend a lot of time preparing their routines, preparing these floats, getting the performances in order and ready to go. We talked with some of the folks will getting ready for this very big day. You know you routine, your music, your dance steps. You are confident in your abilities and everybodys abilities around you. You have to get yourself into a mindset. Just like a professional athlete. The other team has to play in the same cold. If youre mentally prepared, thats what it comes down to. Reporter and it is new years day, and january 1, you do expect to be somewhat cold. But a lot of folks are probably not prepared for just how cold it is today with windchills down in the Single Digits or below zero. And temperatures in the teens, which is what we are feeling right now. It is very, very cold. And if you are out for even longer than 5, 10 minutes, it can really start to feel nasty. So be prepared if you come out, get the hand warmers, get layers and be safe. Dangerous cold is also complicating things for residents of a northeast philadelphia apartment complex that suffered a power outage right after midnight. Crews are working to fix the problem with the underground transformer that left more than 30 people with no power. It happened at the Victoria Woods apartments forcing people to pack up quickly and get out. Its crazy, i have a baby in the car. We just got to go and see how long it takes. Hope it didnt take that long. Red cross is also helping get them to a warm shelter. No time table yet for when the power problem will be fixed. Happening today, you may see some familiar faces among bands in the tournament of roses parade. The pens Bury High School marching band, long orange line, they are in pasadena right now preparing to take part in the parade. This is video of the group as they left last week. The band is one of 16 selected to participate. You can catch the parade right here on nbc 10 starting at 11 00 a. M. And here is a look at part of the final preparations for the parade yesterday. Police escort led floats from a warehouse to the parade route. After the parade, the oklahoma sooners and georgia bulldogs will play in the rose bowl. Vacation adventure to costa rica ends in tragedy for a new york family. A mother, father and their three sons are all among 12 killed in this plane crash. Ten americans in all died, two local crew member. The steinberg family of scarsdale was headed to costa rica gyesterday when their plan crashed into a month shortly after takeoff. A whole family should meet with such a disaster. Recovery teams have been sorting through the wreckage. What caused the plane to go down from the sky is not yet known. Everybody had high hopes, it wasnt exactly the regular Season Finale eagles fans were hoping to see. But now they can just simply turn their attention to the playoffs. The eagles were shut out 60 in the bitter cold yesterday. But with the top seed already locked up, this was just a chance for backups really to get some experience. Lehigh valley, 13 by 11 00. 17 is where you will top out. It will be 17 in delaware at 11 00, topping out at 21. You will top out at 19 in jersey and it will be about 20 along the jersey shore. So bitterly cold out there. Doppler radar shows clear skies. We dont have clouds, we dont have any rain. Nothing to hold any warmth in. Hour by hour, well be scooting through into the teens today. Tomorrow well be generally in those low 20s. By the time we get to wednesday, maybe mid20s. But a coastal storm will be tracking right up the shoreline. Could bring us rain. Could bring us snow. The exact location how far away it is is something well have to watch because this could affect you very heavily on your thursday both morning and evening. We have been watching what turned out to be a pretty nasty crash on the boulevard. Yeah, Pamela Osborne has been keeping a close eye on it. And we have a live picture behind me here. You can see this is the overturned vehicle. We know there were multiple vehicles involved in this crash. Two people were transported to the hospital. And this has been blocking the northbound lanes of the boulevard down all morning long. If we can, lets switch over to the other camera so i can show you what is going on. This is happening right near roberts avenue is where this accident is on the boulevard.
