Inside, three gop lawmakers holding up a procedural vote, until leadership promised they could make more late changes to the bill. It cant fail. Kacharlie rose off the air. Harvey weinstein, taking a leave of absence. Reporter everyone seems to be rethinking the american workplace. They see men in power. They see hollywood actors. They see comedians like everything is happening and theyre getting fired. Reporter with Sexual Harassment and abuse in the spotlight, men and women are facing long overdue conversations, about what is appropriate, what is not and where the line is. Things that are blatantly harassment to me. And things that like, we used to be able to say these things together and now its harassment. Reporter men and women are reevaluating their own conduct, rethinking past events they witnessed or participating in. Questioning whether a past action crossed the line. Revelations of misdeeds have exploded into all professions. Politics, Silicon Valley and banking. Metoo, spreading like wildfire. But the creator of that social Media Campaign says the guidelines workplaces have in place have not done their job. There has to be accountability for the victim. And the perp raetrator has to understand there is zero tolerance. Reporter women, too, are not all viewing these issues in the same way. One in three women are worried about being Sexual Assaulted. But theres a generational gap. With younger women, more concerned than those who are older. Everyone can agree, the workplace is going through a seismic shift. Anytime theres a big power shift. Anytime theres a sudden change, it can feel unsettling. It doesnt mean thats the wrong thing to do. But it means we shouldnt expect it to be comfortable. Reporter in a matter of months, anger has boiled to the surface, upending places of business in a way that america really hasnt seen before. And cofounders and coceos of the skim, a company that publishes a popular newsletter aimed at young women. Good morning. I hope we can have a thoughtful conversation. Tina, i will start with you. This is a moment. T this is a cultural moment. And it feels that everything has changed. Do you think it has . And is it a permanent change . Were in the middle of a revelation. That is a bookend to the womens march in january, which was the largest oneday protest in american history. Women are stayiaying enough is enough. We have played nice for too long. How many times did we talk about women in the pipeline. Women are going to be empowered. Women are going to transition to places of power. Gains have been made. But theres a sense of being stalled. Women are just tired of it. Theyre just tired of being told there is an idea theyre going to come into power as opposed to being the ones who are talking a bt about it all the time. Having the power is you change the norms. Its not rocket science. There were ten men on Harvey Weinstein companys board. No women. Its insane. We wonder if this is a generational thing. You are ceos of the skim. Great company. The stuff i remember putting up with as a young reporter, the jokes, the innuendo and things i just laughed off, do you fell that . Have that . Or tolerate anything like that . Yes. You do . To be honest, i hope those things change. I hope this causes that change. But we started out in the business ten years ago. And all of those things, its on the line of assault that we heard about, which is horrific. But the innuendo. The being put in situations that you shouldnt have to be put in the workplace. Of your generation. Absolutely. I heard someone recently, socially, someone said we worked in finance and didnt understand what everyone was talking about because she doesnt work with women. Think about what that statement means. That means that women you dont realize and probably why are women not surrounded . Because they probably didnt get that job. Why were they not in Computer Science classes . Why werent they into that pipeline as you referenced. This is the millennial generation. We watched mad men. It seems like an era thats so far away. We can say, look at that misogynistic behavior. That can never happen. And there is that line, which is Sexual Assault, which is criminal in many cases. And then, there is what happens when its just sexist behavior in the workplace. I turn to you. You are a man who worked in this area. You do good work. And men need to be a part of this conversation. What is your message to them . First of all, i want to say that, we really, our heart goes out to the victims. And i think about, when i think about the women who had the courage to come forward, i think about all of the women in the margins of the margins, who, the domestic workers, the undocumented worker. The woman who is working in a lowpaying job. And all theyre being abused and disrespect is happening there. Men have to, as women are finding their voice, men have to find their voice, too. Its not up to us. Its not going to end unless men become part of the solution. We address this from intervention. Something has to happen and we have to react to it. We want to go to prevention where it never happens in the first place. That bridge is mental. We have to be different as men. While most are not abusive, and dont discriminate, we are silent about the abuse and discrimination. Thats as much a problem as the violence is. We are passing this down to our boys. We did a survey, with our curricul curriculum. Different ethnicities. 81 of boys do not know what consent is. That explains Sexual Assault in the military. Sexual assault on college campuses. Our boys are being taught that no means try harder. Lets talk about punishment. What should the punishment be. Do they never work again. What tell us what you think that bar is. Tina . Clearly, because were in the throes of a revelation, a revolution is bloody in the beginning. Were going to see severe punishments, what were seeing with huge careers going. I think its going to change quickly. As companies realize, that to harbor and nurture and cover up a sexual predator, who is a bigticket item in their company, an important manager or further down the line, just an effective worker. Theyre going to realize its too much of a liability to tall ra tolerate it. You dont have to be as severe because it wont be happening as much. People just laws can change quickly when theres money at stake. What is tricky and we dont have the time to really get into it, its the gray area. Everyone knows assault is wrong. That is not a close call. Our generation is talking a lot about. We have been talking to so many men in the last two weeks who are like, how do ainteract wii h women . We know these people for years and they were afraid to hug us. Im happy that the questions about the gray area are being asked. And it has to be a conversation with men out there. On the other hand, i feel like, in a lot of circumstances, you know when youre making someone uncomfortable. Yeah. Especially going in the Holiday Season, weve had questions about etiquette at holiday parties. Theres thing s you know not to do. Dont do it. You know. And accountability is the key, not only in policy but between men. That same man whos sexually harassing a woman at the workplace, just told a joke to his buddies. Saying, check her out. All those things. As men, we have to speak up and say, thats not cool with me. Were not going to behave that way and have accountability. Its just an uncool thing to be this kind of a jerk. Its an invitation to men. Its an invitation to do things differently. To change our culture and it starts with a lot of internal honesty with all concerned. Thank you for this discussion.
