President trump has a full day of highstakes meetings on both sides of pennsylvania avenue today. First stop, capitol hill, where he will push Senate Republicans to get behind the tax reform plan with more than a dozen senators expressing doutd expret now. Later this afternoon, the president is back at the white house, where he will meet with leaders of both parties to discuss the rest of his agenda. The president adding urgency to all of it. Hopefully republican senators will give us the muchneeded tax cuts to keep it all going. Democrats want big tax increases. In just a few hours, President Trump heads to the hill, where hell make a hard sell for tax reform. It will be a tremendous tax cut. The biggest in the history of our country. Reporter overnight, some gop senators acknowledging they have concerns about the bill in its current form. A report from the Congressional Budget Office found the bill could cause middle income americans to pay more. Are you going to vote for this bill . I dont know. I have concerns on the deficit side. Reporter in order to pass the bill, Senate Republicans can only afford to lose two votes. And right now, at least one senator, ron johnson, is a no. We need more information. But well keep working on this. We need to pass real tax reform. Reporter the legislative battle coming amid a fresh firestorm for the white house, after President Trump made this controversial comment during a white house ceremony honoring navajo code talkers, Navy American veterans who helped win world war ii. Memories of my homelessness. Heaven done signed my name my voice has saved me from being homeless. Reporter jonathan, what a spectacular idea. The idea of a homeless choir. How did this even come about . It was just a pickup choir of anybody that was at the day shelter. And i would make an announcement, who wants to sing today . When i came in, there wasnt no seats. They were turning me back around to leave. Someone said, sing. I just sung. People was like, he can have my seat. He can have my seat. Ill go. I felt at home there. And it just made me really want to come back again tomorrow. Reporter jonathan has become more than just the director of the dallas street choir, hes family. And for many, the one constant in their lives. A lot of choir directors deal with certain things. You have a whole different set of issues that you need to deal with. Sure. Whether you have Mental Illness or not, you are welcome in this choir. We have folks with addiction. And if youre under the influence, youre asked to leave and say, you know, this isnt your week. Come back next week. Reporter everyone gets a Second Chance . And a third and a fourth. Reporter after 2 1 2 years of conducting the choir, jonathan thought these men and women deserved an even bigger stage. Carnegie hall is just so beautiful. Im feeling like im a queen because i get to go to the royal palace. Its surreal. Not only are we making history for us and the dallas street choir, but were making history for Carnegie Hall. Reporter to prepare, they need more than just their music. Were going with this right here. Reporter for many, its the first time out of texas. Or even on a plane. 22 members set off on the trip of their lives. And over to the left, we have times square. Reporter joined by another of jonathans community choirs. It scares me how well you do that one. Reporter in its 126 years, Carnegie Hall has never showcased a homeless choir. Hi. Hi, you guys. How are you . This is big. Do yall have family members who know whats happening . Yes. Reporter they do . My oldest son says, shut em down, momma. Reporter shut em down, momma. You want to come and take a little peek, see what its like on the stage of Carnegie Hall. Are they Carnegie Hall good, do you think . Are they Carnegie Hall good . It doesnt matter. Reporter why doesnt it matter . Its not about being Carnegie Hall good. Its about being Carnegie Hall worthy, and that they are. Reporter are you all right . Ive been poor all my life. But right now, i feel so rich. I feel validated. Reporter do yall want to try a couple of notes, just to see how it sounds . We traveled to dubuque, iowa, where most days, the abbey can be handcrafting caramels, a treat for near and far. For sisters of the mississippi abbey, entrepreneurship comes second only to prayer. Because life for these nuns is candycoated. Its a very sweet job. Tastes great. My work is a means of sharing with the world. We enjoy making a product that will add delight and pleasure to peoples lives. Reporter theirs is a sugary production, during candy season, runs six days a week at their monastery. Turning these ladies into candymakers. They handcrafted 60,000 pounds of mints, care mels and meltaways. Theyre wrapped away. Meltaways. Not the caramels. The meltaways.
