A fire ripped through a senior facility in the dead of night. Skaf members scrambled to save team as their home goes up in spoke. At least 20 people were taken to area hospitals. Dozens more are being taken to temporary shelters. Nbc10 news has live coverage of the fire at barclay friends nursing home in west chester. Katy zachry is there live and spoke with witness whos jumped into action to help out. We start with dray clark at the good fellowship ambulance center. Families were sent there to find out if their loved ones are okay. Reporter as you would imagine, family members very upset, not knowing where their family members were or if, in fact, they were injured in the fire. Many relieved once nay got here to one of the temporary shelters. The good fellow ambulance company. You see in fact one of the displaced residents waiting to be loaded into a bus here and then taken to a new temporary home here. A frightening scene. Well show video of the flames engulfing part of that Senior Center last night at around 10 46. It was a mad dash on the inside for workers trying to get many of those patients and seniors out of the building. Some not as mobile as others. They had to pick some up and roll them out. Others got out on their own. Nonetheless, a Daring Rescue in some cases. Under very dangerous circumstances. Now the concern is whats going to happen to the residents. Whats going to happen to workers now that part of the building has been destroyed. Some of the staff said, what happens to our jobs . I said, were going to need someone to take care of residents. Thats where our concern is. Not only for residents, but families upset trying to find them. Yeah, weve never had anything like this. Reporter back here back here live, its been a team effort all morning. One of the displaced residents will be taken to temporary housing. Weve seen some residents leave with family members, the vast majority have either left on buses or inside ambulances here. This morning last night, people saw the smoke and wasted no time in rushing in. Nbc10s skz live in west ches live with team coverage. Neighbors rushing to help neighbors. Reporter they are. Firefighters and ems workers rushed to help. Were also hearing stories of regular people, Good Samaritans, even those with medical backgrounds, who dropped everything around 10 30 last night and rushed here to help people they didnt even know. Look at this video. It sets the tonight for what happens in the hours after this fire startestarted. In the streets, dozens of residents huddled in wheelchairs in blankets, surrounded by First Responders and neighbors, as they wait for buses to drive them to a safer location. Nearly two dozen people were taken to nearby hospitals. Thats what we were told by managers of the building. One of those hospitals, Chester County hospital, is a few blocks from the nursing home. One registered nurse who lives nearby smelled smoke, heard reports of what happened, and rushed out here to help. Theyre cold, theyre scared. Theyre anxious. They wanted to get out of here. Were glad to have gotten them out. Reporter take a look out here live. Sheer some of whats left here is some of whats left from the makeshift Triage Center that really was set up just a block away from that burning nursing home. You have an oxygen taint, a wheelchair, medical facilities. Walkers, blankets, gowns, you name it, everything was in use here about a block away from barclay friends nursing home. They knocked down a garage door to find a room of smoke and fire. In the middle was a man in a wheelchair suffering from burns and smoke inhalation. They got the man out, rushed him to the hospital. He is expected to be okay. New this morning, Police SuspectPolice Suspect a dui driver caused a twocar crash in delaware county. Rescuers had to break out the jaws of life to free two people from the wreckage. The incident happened around 7 00 last night at spry road and cedar grove. Ems rushed three people to the hospital. The crash remains under investigation this morning. For the First Time Since 2001, philadelphia will have control of its own school system. People told nbc10 last night that last night was the first time theyd ever left a meeting of the School Reform commission with a smile. The chair welcomes you yes. [ cheers ] 16 years of frustration ended for many as the frc voted to dissolve itself starting next school year. In february, mayor kenney will appoint his new nineperson school board. In june, the src will officially disband. The new board will take control in july. Parents, activists, and teachers made no bones about how they felt about the srcs performance. Seems to me that the src literally did not realize what they were tasked to do. And that was improved education in the city of philadelphia. They failed, and they failed horribly. At least one Commission Member said philadelphia doesnt have the resources to provide for stability for a new board. Applications to be part of the board will be available starting next month. In south jersey, an 18yearold accused killer is back behind bars and could face more charges after escaping a juvenile facility. Police captured Michael Huggins yesterday morning more than 30 hours after he escaped from Harborfields Youth Detention Center in egg harbor city. Officers found him in an apartment in atlantic city. Police arent sure how he got there and how he came to possess a handgun. Huggins and three other teenagers escaped from after overpowering a guard early wednesday morning. Now, nbc10 has exclusively obtained a recording of a 911 call from a detention center. My coworker, its only us two, hes bleeding. Trying to get out yes, yes, yes, yes. Theyre out are they out . Theyre out. Theyre out the building. Please help us. Police captured three prisoners several hours after the escape. Police are investigating if they had help on the outside. A fire takes over a west chester senior facility. A birds eye view of the damage. This friday, people who need help getting through their day. They were forced out after fire in their building. Fire broke out at the barclay friends nursing home. Workers got 140 people out to safety. Many of them are being taken to other facilities, temporarily shelters now. Nbc10 talked to one woman who saw the flames from her door and raced to help. Once i heard the retirement home was on fire, i looked out my window. There was a blaze of fire about four blocks from my house. I called a friend of mine, and she said, bring coffee, blankets, water. I jumped in the car and went to wawa and got a bunch of coffees and water, and thank you, wawa, for donating that. Crews pointed the Good Samaritan to the good fellowship ambulance station where she said dozens were taken immediately after the fire. Dray clark was there a few minutes ago checking that fire house. Now hes headed to another fire house to check with families who are looking for their loved 1800. Well get an update in about 15 minutes. Were following road closures that go into effect later for the annual philadelphia weekend. The races start tomorrow with the hard marathon. The full marathon is set for sunday. The outer lanes of the ben franklin parkway will be closed today from 9 30 until 3 30 p. M. Those lanes will be reopened for the evening rush.
