You can see officers standing in the corner of the parking lot outside a 24hour laundromat here. A number of officers just focused here on the corn er. But also we have seen them in other parts of the neighborhood using flashlights as well. They are working to get as much information as we can. Right now a rookie Camden Police officer right there gives the thumbs up from his hospital bed hours after getting shot at pointblank range. Hes the first officer to be shot in camden in more than two years. Cydney long is live in camden. This community is really coming together and talking with police tonight. I can tell you police in this community are bonding in a big way. For one, the Police Officers are barbecuing for families out here. Take as voice concerns about it. It comes 20 hours after a Police Officer was shot and fought the suspect who threatened his life. Hes a bad guy. Hes 19 years old. He has three felony convictions. Reporter when he ran from Police Wednesday night, he was prepared to take an officers life. That officer is now considered a hero despite taking a bullet to his right thigh, he tackled the suspect. He was able to rip the gun out of his hands, toss it off to the side and at the same time overpower the suspect. Backup officers not before he tried to shoot the officer in the face after the first to his leg miraculously the gun jammed. When the gun is fired at close range, fire and hot gun powder come out the end of the gun. Reporter it left a round mark on his leg. It comes in an area known for recent gun activity. He was on a proactive patrol. The community was being victimized by this suspect as much as our officer was last night. I would like to see more visibility. Reporter neighbors say the barbecue station and mobile police unit is appreciated today, but they want more visible patrols. Now that that officer got shot, its a big deal. Care about us before this. Reporter police say they are listening. When the good people feel comfortable enough to leave homes, it changes the dynamic of neighborhoods. Reporter its been two years since a. Cop was shot in camden. He is part of the reason and his fellow officers are why were able to make such great strides. Reporter the work of Community Policing has only just begun. Part of tonights message obviously is that gun violence, Gang Violence and drug violence will not be tolerated in any part of the city. Hes charged with the attempted murder of a Police Officer. President trump is calling for the Death Penalty for the suspected terrorist who drove a truck into a crowd killing eight people in manhattan earlier this week. Agents have not found any communication between the suspect and any terror group, but they know he downloaded thousands of isis propaganda videos and images. Police and witnesses tell nbc 10 when one man tried to intervene, she attack ed him. We went across the street to see if he could help. As he walked over, the guy sucker punched him and he went down. You could hear his head crack all the way over. Witnesses tell us the suspect stay ed at the scene until polie got there and took him into custody. Were working to find out the name of the man who intervened. Hes hospitalized in critical condition. Tonight a 2yearold is in the hospital after getting hit by a police car in delaware this afternoon. The officer crashed into. The child who was being push ed across the street on a tricycle by an adult. It happened at veterans lane b and south main street. The toddler was conscious after that crash. Police say he walked awkwardly and has a tattoo on the left side of his face. Philadelphias mayor wants to get rid of the School Reform commission. The chamber erupted in cheers as they urged to vote to disband. They want to return to a local school board and this move would make the mayor responsible for the successes failures of the district. While this move is widely embraced, some fear the school board will not represent the entire community. They will vote on its future in two weeks.
