Reporter good morning. A somber day in new york city as people try and begin their new devil ray some sense of normal new day with some sense of normalcy after the latest attack. What happened described as graphic and sad, bodies lying on the streets. Some people showing no signs of life. Others screamed in pain and agony for help. Take a look at the video that nbc10 was able to obtain. It shows students running scared from the borough of manhattan Community College. Moments after hearing gunshots and seeing bodies from the school windows. There are several schools in this area, a Community College, high school, and businesses. The area was full of people when the terrorist attack happened at around 3 00 yesterday. And certainly many people could not believe what they were seeing when the suspect began his killing spree. I saw a dude with two guns. The guy for some reason was running around. He was getting chased. All of a sudden, four shots windy off, and we went off, and we all started running. Reporter a member of the nypd was able to stop the suspect by shooting him in the stomach. He was rushed to bellevue hospital. He did undergo surgery and reportedly investigators did try and speak to the suspect. Were told hes refused to answer questions. I want to give you now a live sense of whats happening here behind me. You see members of the nypd. Also a very large media scene. This is the tribecca neighborhood, trendy and upscale. The massive crime scene stretches about a mile alone. And investigators are being very methodical. They want to make sure that nothing is overlooked in their investigation. You lived and worked there for years before coming to philadelphia. Whats the mood, the state of mind of people getting up and starting their day there . Reporter i think people are somber, and they are sad. The message was you cannot break the will or spirit of the people of new york. They want people to carry on their sense of normalcy with their lives. At the same time, theyre telling people to be very aware of their surroundings. If they see something, they should Say Something immediately. Live in lower manhattan, nbc10 news. A message we heard over and over yesterday. Thanks. Meanwhile, nbc10 has learned the suspect also has ties to pennsylvania and new jersey. Weve learned saipov was charged with trafficrelated offenses in the poconos in 2012. Years later, the 29yearold was arrested in central pennsylvania on similar charges. Officials say he rented the pickup used in the attack from home depot in north jersey. We called the store in passaic county, but they chose not to comment. A friend tells nbc that saipov may have been married with kids. They described him as a very happy guy who was no terrorist. Weve seen more and more terrorists using trucks to carry out deadly attacks which poses a challenge to police. Nbc10 spoke to Security Officials about what can be done to protect the public. Matt delucia is live with the safety solutions. Tell us more. Reporter well, lets talk about that. Stopping a car or truck is not an easy thing. A curb isnt going to do it. Even metal fences like this one here will be tough to stop a car or truck that is moving. A lot of buildings and businesses and major landmarks have relied on things like these, like big, concrete planters, also these ballards that stick up out of the ground. The problem is that you wont find those everywhere. With truck attacks becoming more and more commonplace lately, its another layer for Law Enforcement to keep in mind. A terrorism expert we spoke with last night says simply and sadly what happened in new york yesterday could easily happen here. Because of that, we see amped up security at major events, even garbage trucks used to block roadways. It does bear noting from the philly Police Commissioner and even the former Homeland Security official, their reaction to attacks like the one in new york is sobering. You cant put cement barriers up everywhere. You cant put blocking vehicles everywhere. Certainly this is why we take measures at largescale events like parades and demonstrations sometimes. Whether it be streets or what have you. Theres a reason were out there. In terms of peoples everyday living, it is not possible to safeguard people that way every day. Theres not much that the Law Enforcement or Intelligence Community or citizens can do. Im sad to say that. Certainly we have to be vigilant, but we all cant walk around in fear. Reporter thats why both of them say keeping an eye on surroundings is critical. You know the line see something, Say Something. These lines can do a good job at stopping a truck, but it only works if youre near one. Nbc10 news. Thanks. Theres much more ahead on the today show starting at 7 00 a. M. After nbc10 news today. 6 38. 43 degrees. First in philadelphia, a Police Lieutenant says a recent hit and run is a horrifying incident.
