If you were a yankees fan, it was hard to watch it. They were dominated by the astr astros. Lets get right to our top story and that is President Trump speaking out overnight about the controversy over a phone call that he made to the family of a fallen soldier. It is just the latest twist in whats been a weeklong debate. Kelly odonnell is at the white house this morning with more on that. Kelly, good morning. Reporter good morning, craig. The center of this story is not really at the white house today, as friends and family gather for the memorial of a fallen american soldier. But for days there has been an intense political squabble over the right kinds of words and gestures appropriate to pay respects. A controversy President Trump says he did not expect. I was very surprised to see this, to be honest with you. Reporter in a new fox Business Interview to air sunday, President Trump defended himself and chief of staff general john kelly over the handling of a condolence call to the family of fallen Army Sergeant la david johnson. He was so offended, because he was in the room when i made the call. Reporter general kelly argued it was not appropriate for florida congresswoman frederica wilson, a Johnson Family friend, to listen in on the president s phone call and then to criticize trumps words. He actually couldnt believe it. Actually he said to me, sir, this is not acceptable. This is really not. And he knew i was so nice. Reporter but kelly, who lost his son, robert, in afghanistan, made an inaccurate charge against wilson thursday, accusing her of selfpromoting at a 2015 fbi building dedication. Talked about how she was instrumental in getting the funding for that building. Reporter but wilson had not boasted about funding. She talked about getting rushed approval to name the building after fbi agents killed on duty. I went to the speaker, speaker boehner. And i said, mr. Speaker, i need your help. The fbi needs your help. Reporter President Trump called wilson wacky in a tweet, and the press secretary pushed back at reporters who cited kellys false claim. If you want to go after general kelly, thats up to you, but i think that if you want to get into a debate with a fourstar marine general, i think that thats highly inappropriate. Reporter Sarah Sanders later backed off that criticism saying in a statement of course everyone can be questioned. And more heated words came from the president s former chief strategist, steve bannon, who took what he calls his civil war to the California State Republican Party convention late last night. He directed his fire toward former president george w. Bush, after the 43rd president had just days ago remarked about the, quote, casual cruelty in our public discourse. President bush to me embarrassed himself. Speechwriter wrote a high falutin speech. Its clear he didnt understand anything he was talking about, just like it was when he was president of the united states. Reporter bannon also directed his fire at other prominent republicans, including senator john mccain, saying they are not properly and completely supporting President Trump. Craig. Kelly odonnell for us at the white house this morning. Kelly o. , thank you. Steve kornacki is a National Political correspondent for nbc news and msnbc. Steve, good morning to you. Good morning. Well get to the president s comments in just a moment but first lets get bag to bannon. First of all, attacking two prominent republicans. You have president george w. Bush, you have john mccain. What is behind all of this . Not only that, hes vowing this season of war against establishment republicans. Whats his goal . And then the potential impact of this socalled war. What steve bannon is trying to do to the entire Republican Party, meaning senators, members of the house, governors, every elected official in the country, hes trying to make every elected official be a Donald Trumpstyle republican and continue that war that the trump forces launched in the republican primaries last year and extend it to the rest of the party. The amazing thing about that speech is so much of what he said would have been absolutely unthinkable in major politics a year or two years ago. You think about that. He went after george w. Bush, he went after john mccain. Well, in the campaign, donald trump said that george w. Bush lied us into iraq and john mccain wasnt really a war hero. So many of these fights that are popping up right now are fights that in some way we went through during the campaign. What donald trump established in the campaign, whatever anybody thinks of him. What he established is it is possible to say those things and get elected president. I think its opened the door for somebody like bannon to say we can change the entire Republican Party. Steve, lets go back to this controversy over the condolence calls to the family of Fallen Soldiers in this country, a story thats dominated the headlines this week. President trump defending his actions again in that tv interview thats going to air on sunday. Congresswoman wilson playing the race card, if you will, late yesterday saying that the white house is full of white supremacists. Whats really happening here . Is this an issue that has politicized by both sides . Well, remember i said it feels like there are things that would never have been that issue in politics before the last year or two. This is another one. The death of an american hero, the death of a soldier, the president s response to this. I cant remember a time when Something Like this has been at issue in partisan politics, but it is. Its sort of i would say this is the trumpification of politics. Just in terms of his own agenda, he succeeded in getting the other side to respond and escalate its own rhetoric. Now youve got the congresswoman escalating what she says. She said white supremacists. Youve got john kelly, the chief of staff, trump has him involved and its escalated into this cultural brouhaha. That seems to be his approach to everything. Well have to hold on and see where this is going. Steve kornacki, thank you. Sure. Many questions remain about precisely what happened on that deadly day in niger when four american soldiers were ambushed and killed. And now the fbi is getting involved in the investigation. Nbcs pentagon correspondent hans nichols is following this part of the story. Hans, good morning to you. Reporter good morning, craig. As we learn more about this situation, officials at the pentagon caution that even investigators dont have all the facts. Secretary mattis reporter after being briefed by defense secretary jim mattis about the ambush that left four american soldiers dead in niger, congress is bracing for a new front in the fight against isis. We dont want the next 9 11 to come from niger. Reporter senator Lindsey Graham calling for more congressional oversight while warning americans about the changing battlefield. The war is headed to africa. Its beginning to morph. As we suppress the enemy in the mideast, theyre going to move. Reporter mattis summoned to capitol hill to explain how elite soldiers were taken by surprise. We can always improve on communication and thats exactly what well do. Reporter public explanations coming as the internal investigation gathers steam. The fbi lending forensic support, looking into how a team of well trained special forces was ambushed, the pentagon says, by a group of 50 isislinked fighters. Military officials now say the special forces who were meeting with the tribal elders before the attack may have been delayed intentionally, allowing isis to attack. And a senior congressional aide extensively briefed tells nbc news that the ambush that killed Sergeant La David Johnson and three other soldiers stemmed in part from a, quote, massive intelligence failure. But the pentagon warns that such conclusions are premature. Still, there are urgent questions about why the team was exposed without drone support directly overhead. Earlier this year the u. S. Commander for africa warned that only 20 to 30 of his intelligence requirements were satisfied. Its very dangerous when you carry out any mission and you dont have extended eyes and ears around yourself or the human intelligence to determine when youve met a threat. Reporter the formal inquiry taking place as the last soldier who died in niger, sergeant johnson, was mourned by his family. Craig, this morning the New York Times is reporting different accounts from the american soldiers in the and the nigerian soldiers. Whether they gave chase to some islamic extremists. Theyre trying to clear that up. At the same time, secretary mattis would not say whether he authorized or President Trump, rather, authorized this mission. Talking to pentagon officials, though, its clear this kind of mission would not require president ial authorization. Hans nichols for us there in d. C. Thank you. Also this morning a show of force from the u. S. Against north korea with the Aircraft Carrier the uss Ronald Reagan now stationed at a port in south korea as part of a joint naval exercise with that country. It comes just a few days after north koreas latest threatening comments towards the u. S. Keir simmons has made it inside north korea for a rare look inside that country. Good morning. Reporter good morning, guys. This weekend the rhetoric from the capital of north korea, pyongyang, where i am now, continues. The North Koreans writing to the australians complaining of the, quote, heinous and reckless moves by President Trump and warning that if there is an attempt to topple the leadership of north korea, it will lead to a nuclear disaster. We came here to try to assess the views of ordinary North Koreans. And while this is a country that frowns upon dissent, what we have found from most North Koreans is that they say while they want peace, they are ready for war, even a nuclear war with america. In terms of the question of whether north korea might threaten the winter olympics, which are due to take place in south korea next year, we have asked them again and again whether their skaters, who have qualified for those games, will actually compete. So far there appears to be no decision on that. Perhaps that would be an indication, because of course if North Koreans were taking part in the games, it would seem less likely that a government here in pyongyang would threaten those very games. But well see. Craig and sheinelle, back to you. Thank you. Meanwhile back here at home, a developing story down south where police in florida are trying to figure out if a serial killer is on the loose. Three people have been killed in tampa in just the past two weeks, and police are now working around the clock to catch their killer or killers. Nbcs Kerry Sanders has more. Also new this morning, the accusations against Harvey Weinstein. Two more actresses coming forward with Horror Stories involving the movie mogul. This morning were learning that the Los Angeles PoliceDepartment Investigating at least one of those serious allegations. Steve patterson has the latest. Reporter Harvey Weinsteins latest accuser, emotionally detailing yet another hollywood horror story involving the media mogul. I felt so powerless because he is, after all, very powerful. Reporter friday former actress heather kerr alleged weinstein forced her to touch his genitals during a casting meeting in the late 80s. He told me this was how things worked in hollywood and that all of the actresses that had made it, had made it this way. Reporter kerrs account adds to reports of more than 60 women accusing weinstein of everything from Sexual Harassment to rape. Shortly after kerrs announcement, the attorney for an italian actress and model reasserted claims his client was raped four years ago inside this Beverly Hills hotel. I can tell you that what she explained to them in graphic detail, its my understanding that that caused lapd to open up a criminal investigation for Sexual Assault and rape. Reporter several sources tell nbc news the unidentified woman met with lapd detectives for more than two hours thursday, saying weinstein knocked on her door uninvited, dragged her into the bathroom and raped her. She had no idea what was coming, and her greatest regret is opening that door. Reporter weinstein is maintaining his innocence. His spokesperson releasing a statement saying in part, any allegations of nonconsensual sex are unequivocally denied by mr. Weinstein. Meanwhile, Academy AwardwinningActress Lupita Nyongo detailed her encounters with weinstein in the New York Times. Saying she panicked when weinstein asked to give her a massage. She gave him a massage instead to be in control physically. A growing hollywood scandal spanning decades with accusat n accusations all aimed at the same name. For today, steve patterson, nbc news, hollywood. Lets bring in lisa green now, an attorney, and also a legal analyst here. Lisa, good morning to you. Lets start with the italian actress and model who claims that she was raped by weinstein back in 2013. That brings the total number of women who have claimed that weinstein raped them to six. Is weinstein now in serious legal jeopardy . You know, this has already been catastrophic for Harvey Weinstein but theres no question that these criminal charges, especially given the ability women now have to come forward with older claims in places like new york, california and in london, makes things significantly more serious for him. But are these accusations hard to prove . Is it he said she said essentially . Typically the easiest rape charges to bring to conviction are strangers and violence. This is neither of those things. Harvey weinstein has said all of these engagements were consensual. Nonetheless, the severity and specificity of these charges and the willness now of women to come forward, serious issues for him. Weve talked about the potential criminal charges. Civil charges here, potential civil suits, the likelihood of that at this point . Theyre easier to bring. The burden of proof is lower. Something to look for is the possibility that employees may decide to forego their nondisclosure agreements and Start Talking about what happened inside the company. That would allow for a whole other set of civil claims. You obviously dont have a crystal ball but what happens next here . From a legal perspective, what happens next . I think we may or may not be at the end of the number of women who come forward, so you could expect to hear more claims. Watch what happens at the company, and Harvey Weinstein has a lot of lawyering up to do. Lisa, thank you. Dylan has another check of the weather. Hey, guys. We do have a chance of stronger storms today out ahead of this cold front thats going to move through the Southern Plains and into parts of the midwest. Theyll fire up later on this afternoon. A quickmoving line of storms stretching from minneapolis st. Paul right down through oklahoma city. But its down through oklahoma, southeastern kansas where we could see our strongest storms. As we go into sunday, the storms weaken a bit but do move into the chicago and st. Louis area, down into little rock as well. So today, again i mentioned oklahoma. Thats where we could see some of the strongest storms, damaging wind and hail will be the biggest threats with these storms. That extends into parts of southeastern kansas as well. As for rainfall, again, were not looking at a whole lot of rain back through the Southern Plains because it is a fastmoving system. But as we go into tomorrow and monday, areas like tennessee and alabama, wcould end upe good morning. Im first alert meteorologist krystal klei. Today going to be another very nice day to get outside with sunny to mostly sunny conditions, light winds, low humidity and much warmer than average conditions. 78 is the forecast high in center city this afternoon. Up to the mid and upper 70s even in the pennsylvania suburbs. And lehigh valley, allentown, a high of 76 degrees and mostly sunny. Voorhees today 77. 71 over ocean city. On friday, the dow, the s p 500 and the nasdaq all closed at record highs fueled by hopes of tax reform. And that has a lot of folks wondering can i get into the market now or am i too late to the party . Our friend, Stephanie Ruhle, former investment banker, is here to break it all down. Always good to see you. I always like parties. I like markets and parties. First of all, whats driving this rally . Its Interest Rates. Remember, the rally didnt start when President Trump won. And granted weve seen a real trump bump, the promise of deregulation and tax reform, but this rally has been going on since 2009 and its largely in part to low Interest Rates. Low Interest Rates around the world. When Interest Rates are low, companies can borrow, theyre flexible, they can hire, and so youre seeing this steady climb over time and thats been a really big positive. I think its interesting to note about half of americans dont have any investments. Lets say someone sitting at home, lets say they have 1,000 to invest, thats it. Are there some easy ways to get started . When you say the economys doing great, look at the stock market, half of us dont own any stocks. But if you want to, remember, you cannot time the market, you cant choose the bottoms, you cant choose the highs, even professional investors cant. If you want to get in, start easy. Blue clihips, for example. If you take the Dow Jones Industrial average, youve got 30 big stocks out there. Why are they called blue chips . Based on their reputation, history, past profitability. Now, past profitability does not guarantee future returns but you know its a safer bet, they have done well in the past. Thats the way to dip your toe in if you want to buy an individual stock. If you want to go broader than that, you can go mutual funds. A mutual fund is a portfolio, a bunch of different names kind of dipping your toe in but then you have a professional investor running that mutual fund and you have to pay a fee. You have to make sure thats not a huge fee thats going to eat up your profits. The third option would be an index. In that youre making an entire bet on the economy. Youre buying the s p, youre buying the dow jones, so thats a very broad range saying i bet that the market is going to go up. Now, remember, any investment you could absolutely lose. You cannot walk in saying i know im going to do well. You need to have patience. But if you do lose money and you do sell and you sell before the year is out and you sell below where you bought the stock, you get to write that off. At this point, a lot of folks have suggested that perhaps a number of these stocks are overpriced. Of course this marks i think this was the week that marked the 30th anniversary of the 87 crash. Are we headed, you think, perhaps for another course correction . There could be a correction. As it relates to the crash that we saw all those years ago, that is what you call a black swan. That is a oneoff event. But even since then, now there are whats known as Circuit Breakers in the market. If theres an extreme drop, the regulators turn the machines off and say lets slow down. Even when that crash happened or the flash crash of 2010, patience heals all wounds. By the end of the year, things actually went up in both of those cases. But if you want to know if were going to have a correction now . Hard to tell. What you want to do is look at the overall market and say theres ten sectors. Of those ten sectors, what is outperformed the market . Things Like Health Care have, things like hot, hot areas. If you say thats outperformed the market, if i chase it, that could be a mistake for me. Why dont you look for things that underperform the market. So if you look at the bottom sectors, really study them, if theres a wave and they catch up, you might want to ride those. Thank you. Where were you in my econ class back in college . That was good. Welcome to new york city and thank you for stopping by. We have got a lot to get to this morning in the final half hour. Lets start with todays news. Good morning, im Kelly Odonnell at the white house where President Trump now says he was caught off guard by criticism of his condolence call to the family of a soldier killed in action. Sergeant johnsons memorial is today. Days after a very public quarrel between a congresswoman and the chief of staff. He was so offended because he was in the room when i made the call. Reporter general kelly argued it was not appropriate for florida congresswoman frederica wilson, a Johnson Family friend, to listen in on the president s phone call. He actually couldnt believe it. Actually he said to me, sir, this is not acceptable. Mr. Speaker, i need your help. The fbi needs your help. Reporter the press secretary pushed back at reporters who cited kellys false claim. If you want to get into a debate with a fourstar marine general, i think that thats something highly inappropriate. Reporter Sarah Sanders later backed off that criticism saying in a statement, of course everyone can be questioned. And heated rhetoric of a different kind came last night from the president s former chief strategist, steve bannon. He was speaking in california directing his fire at former president george w. Bush who this week spoke out against nationalism and bigotry. President bush to me embarrassed himself. Speechwriter wrote a high falutin speech. Its clear he didnt understand anything he was talking about, just like it was when he was president of the united states. Reporter and although president bush had not mentioned President Trump by name, many viewed his criticism of the rhetoric and casual cruelty, as he called it, as a rebuke of President Trump. Craig, sheinelle. Kelly odonnell, thank you. The fbi is now getting involved in the investigation into that deadly attack in niger that left those four american soldiers dead. The fbi is lending forensic support to help find out how a team of well trained special forces was ambushed by what the pentagon describes as a group of 50 isislinked fighters. Meanwhile the funeral for 25yearold Sergeant La David Johnson, whose body was not recovered until nearly 48 hours after the attack, is being held this morning in florida. An investigation is under way in munich, germany, this morning for a man who went on a stabbing spree. Five people were injured in the attack. The motive is not clear right now, but police have one man in custody but cannot confirm if he is indeed the attacker. A los angeles judge has tossed out a 417 million award against Johnson Johnson granting that companys request for a new trial, citing errors and jury misconduct in the last one. Take a look when he picked up his fifth foul late in the game. Rather than complaining to the ref, he gave him a kiss on the head. Playing against a team that traded him away, howard helped the hornets dominate the hawks. Right after that the referee gave him a technical foul. No, that did not happen. Analysts at party casino studied Box Office Data from 1980 to 2017 looking for the best return on investment of male actors who starred in at least ten films during that time. The result might not be what you expect. Coming in at number five is dudley moore. Number four is tyler perry. Three goes to mel gibson. Two to Jean Claude Van dam and ready for the top spot . I bet its the rock. It is emilio estevez. For every dollar spent on the actors films, he generated 6. 70 at the box office. As for the worst return, its equally surprising. Brad pitt. They say he returns only 10 cents for every dollar spent. Im surprised the rock is not on that list. I think back in the 80s they didnt pay actors as much but they would rake in a lot of money, especially over time. Dudley moore. I would not have guessed. Of course i wouldnt have guessed emilio estevez. Well, thank you for that news we can use. Youre welcome. Well be talking about that all day, along with your organized freezer.
