So i had to take it. When people say that theyre surprised that theres so much Sexual Harassment out there i dont get it. Theyre oblivious. For me the Harvey Weinstein situation, it wasnt a surprise. There is a very strong connection between his conduct and the conduct we face every day. I mean, i dont know anyone in my life any woman in my life who has not been harassed assaulted, raped. What has to changes . The laws doesnt matter if nobodys there to enforce them. The burden needs to stop being put on women always to be the ones who are sounding the alarm. I dont think that anyone at any of my jobs ever thought that we were equal in our power. Then what makes you hopeful well were talking about it. Harvey weinstein isnt the only one. Hopefully now women will hear our stories and say, i can step forward. What do you want to say to the women who are watching this who see themselves in your story . My message is that youre powerful. Neurosurgeon matt mcgurt happened to be on call at Carolina Medical Center a level one trauma injury. His spine was torn in two, dislocated ligaments ruptured. Bone everywhere. His spinal cord took a right turn through the canal. I dont know how it wasnt severed. How long does surgery usually take . This surgery can take up to four hours. How long was yours . Surgery only took 90 minutes for us that day. The doctor thought his chance of walking again was maybe 2 but dean said he knew he would walk again from the minute he was hit. I felt a calming presence. I didnt know what was going to happen but i just gave it to god. I also knew that i had to forgive will for hitting me. In that moment . In that moment because if i carry that resentment around its going to eat mea live. While still in the hospital dean otto was visited by will huffman. Everyone told will, dont go. Did you ask for his forgiveness . Oh, yeah. Yeah. I said im so terribly sorry. You know it was an accident. But, you know i hope that youll forgive me for it. He said ive already forgiven you. Just to know that he wassing ingwilling to extend that forgiveness for me it allowed me to move on. What do you think it meant to deans healing that he forgave will . I think it was critical. Against all odds dean otto first took a few steps. He would soon be walking and eventually running and then this idea, to run a Half Marathon a year to the day after the accident the three of them together. Miraculously dean otto would cross the finish line in the napa Half Marathon in just under two hours. Dr. Mcgurt was close behind but will was in trouble. The heat and the hills had done him in so doctor and patient went back to the course and we watched this. Right . We got it. Whew it was a very emotional time for all of us. He was there. He was the guy that hit me in the truck and im down on the ground and now its our turn to go back and help him. He had to cross the line. We got him into this right . Is it a miracle that when everything that needs to fall into place perfectly does just that or is it the human spirit that rises us beyond reasonable expectations . Maybe its both.
