Its prompted an emergency meeting for tonight. As a parent of two young daughters, thats a huge concern of mine. Reporter we discovered there are no uniform rules for how School Districts must protect against mold. In new jersey, no regulatory standard exists for the amount of mold that constitutes a health risk. Without that, Health Agencies dont have a Legal Standard to take enforcement action. In pennsylvania, same story, no state agency has specific Regulatory Authority related to indoor air quality. And in delaware, too, where parents are simply encouraged to report any odors or other air quality concerns to teachers, the principal, the school nurse or Building Maintenance staff. In other words, the very young and those with asthma are likely at highest risk for mold exposure. The epa says all molds can potentially be harmful and yet even that federal agency has not set any standards for airborne mold contaminants. It is worth noting, across our region, state departments of health can close down buildings that threat den Public Health but that can only happen after mold is discovered and disclosed and in both of the local cases, School Leaders made that decision independently before it might have been forced upon them.
