Im via sikahema. Weve issued a first alert for the jersey shore and delaware beaches as hurricane jose churns off the coast. While the storm is still far off the coast, its impacts are being felt here. Its leading to dangerous conditions in the water and posing a flooding risk. We have Team Coverage tracking the storm and its impacts. Nbc10s katy zachry is live along the jersey shore with more on the dangers. We begin with first alert meteorologist bill henley with the latest on the storms path. Bill . The jersey shore and delaware beaches will see the biggest impact from the storm system. The showers, theyre starting to move into the area, you can see light showers moving through Sussex County and delaware. And now reaching some points right along the coast. This is very light stuff. Just a few sprinkles really. The heavier showers are just off shore. Thats where youll find jose. Jose is a weakening storm, a minimal hurricane, 75 mileperhour winds. You see what its doing, spreading rain bands toward our coastline. The rain will be moving in. The wind will be ramping up during the day today. Still moving north, getting closer to the area. Thats why the winds will be increasing even though the storm itself is weakening. So the impacts from the system are going to be increasing during the day today. For the jersey shore and the delaware beaches, just inland, much less of an effect from this storm. Through thursday morning, its going to be a lingering storm off shore as it weakens. High surf and rip current risk will remain high during that time period. High winds, as well, especially later today. Wind gusts of more than Tropical Storm strength, possibly topping 40 miles an hour. And later today, moderate coastal flooding is a possibility. And beach erosion. We could see minor coastal flooding this morning. Right now, pretty quiet. A few showers in new jersey. 70 degrees. Dry and 66 in the suburbs. 72 degrees in philadelphia. Well warm into the upper 70s this afternoon. One exception, the lehigh valley. Well get sunshine today. Farther away from the coast, farther away from the storm, farther away from the wind and the rain that youll see in delaware and at the shore with temperatures in the 70s. Ill break it down hour by hour for each part of our area to show whats going on today when im back in just a few minutes. First, Jessica Boyington has your first alert traffic. Right, and were starting on the vine street expressway. Moving through center city. Cameras around broad street right here closed in between broad street and the schuylkill expressway. N both directions. It expressway in both directions. It typically lasts until 5 00. Back to the vine. Watching the 42 freeway, too. Heres the northbound side from 55 headed up to the walt whitman bridge. Speeds into the high 50s there. It will only take five minutes. Were good to go on the 42 freeway. Route 73 looks good at 295 in both directions. You see maybe a car or two moving either side on 73. North and south looks good. Well end with mass transit. Everything on or close to schedule for septa, patco, and new jersey traffic. From rip currents to possible flooding, hurricane joses impacting the delaware and jersey shores. Reporter yeah, i can tell you a lot of preparations are being made up and down the jersey shore, as well as for delaware beaches. Compared to when we were at the jersey shore this time yesterday morning, the wind has really picked up. It may be dark here along the boardwalk in ocean city. You dont need much light to see just how windy it is. As far as the water conditions, it is rough out there. I can tell you from the whitecaps that are a good distance from the camera. Weve learned that there were dozens of water rescues over the last few days in other shore towns because of these conditions. The surf continues to be strong, and the big concern up and down the jersey shore and at delaware beaches, rip currents are so strong, going in the water is off limits for Atlantic City beaches until wednesday. In ocean city, wind, flooding, and beach erosion is a major concern from hurricane jose. People with loose items here are being told to bring them inside or tie them down over the next few days. Expect the city to close some entrances to the beach. Now the biggest concern in ocean city is for high tide tonight so that means people are really being advised to be aware of the high tide, the strong winds, and because of high tides, streets that are susceptible to flooding are being closed tonight and into tomorrow. Coming up in the next hour, well take you to another shore town where an entire street tells us they are on pins and needles waiting for the effects of hurricane jose. They say its not a question of if it floods there but when. For now reporting live in ocean city, katy zachry, nbc10 news. Thats hurricane jose. Another hurricane, maria, is slamming the caribbean. The storm has dropped down to a category 4, but still more than capable of causing a catastrophicy. The pride main landfall on the island of dominica last night. Officials say the island nation was shut down. Ahead of the storms arrival. Maria is barreling toward puerto rico. President trump has declared a state of emergency, making the u. S. Territory eligible for federal aid. Evacuation orders are out for parts of puerto rico. People on the island were stocking up yesterday on supplies such as plywood, food, and water. It didnt take long for supermarkets aisles to be empty. Puerto ricos governor urged people in floridaprone areas to get out. The difference between life and death. Its really that simple. Puerto rico was a safe haven for caribbean evacuees from hurricane irma. Now it is in marias direct path. People in Central Florida still cleaning up from hurricane irma. Now preparing for maria. Hardware stores are ordering plywood, propane, tarps, batteries. Its unclear if marias path will take it through florida. The people there arent taking any chances as they stock up. It concerns me, but im prepared. Generators, i got everything. They got this down. In the hardhit florida keys, electricity and Sewer Services remain spotty. Authorities are urging people who will are, some of them, just getting home now. Theyre being warned to be selfsieve by bringing selfsufficient by bringing water, food, and tents. New from overnight, Police Questioning sell people about a questioning several people about a shooting in the kingsessing neighborhood, lynnmore street. A man is in the hospital in stable condition. Today theres no school again, but theres hope of progress in the ongoing methacton teachers strike. Classes are canceled for 5,000 students. New talks with expected between the district and its teachers. The Union Officials plan to submit a counter contract proposal to the school board. The twodayold strike is impacting families. Theres an additional financial burden. And were going to have to make these days up at some point. Families of Young Children have the option of ymca care at the skyview elementary school. A Chester County woman will stay in france after being attacked with acid, and she also says she forgives her attacker. Courtney siverling from Silver Spring will finish her semester abroad. Shes one of four Boston College students attacked at a train station. The school says all four are doing well. Theyll stay in france. A woman has been arrested for the attack. Police have arrested her and say she is mentally ill, and this was not a terror attack. In a social media post, siverling says shes praying for the woman to be healed of her mental illness. Youll notice how much lighter the winds are for the lehigh valley. Farther away from the coastline, farther away from the influence of jose. New jersey, a different story. Those are 21 mileperhour winds this afternoon at 2 00. Showers more likely in new jersey and portions of delaware, too. 70 degrees now in new jersey and at the shore. 70 degrees also, staying in the 70s. Look at the winds, 30mileanhour winds at 2 00 this afternoon. And still going at 4 00 today. During the evening high tide, we could see moderate flooding at the shore. Thats between 7 30 and 8 30 this evening. Back bays, even later than that. Delaware, 71 degrees now. We may see some thinning of the clouds this morning. The clouds will be with us for most of the day. Theres a chance of some scattered showers. The temperatures into the upper 70s this afternoon with winds to 13 miles per hour. Thats today. The derailment saturday along the marketfrankford line is the third this year. Our Investigative Reporter talked with septas director of operations about what septa is doing to keep you safe. Weve taken every precaution possible in light of all the incidents recently to make sure everything is running as safe as it can. Septa has changed procedures and is working closely to get feedback from employees who work the system every day. He also says theyll invest in more training. All three accidents this year remain under federal investigator investigation. Federal investigation. Surveillance video shows the moments a tour bus crashed. New information, and the driver shows a history of problems. This happened yesterday in queens. The crash killed three people and injured 16. Here it is. The buses then barrel into a row of storefronts. And that started a fire. This is video of the aftermath. The tour bus driver who died in the crash was a former city bus driver. He was fired back in 2015 after he was arrested for drunk driving and a hit and run. Several drivers from the Tour Bus Company have been cited for speeding and ignoring traffic signals. Two other crashes involving the companys buses have ended in fatalities. If you see one, theres probably 1,000 more hiding, right . Thats what youve heard about cockroaches. In new castle county, residents of one apartment complex say theyre afraid to think how many creatures are crawling in their walls. This is video taken in the coopers Place Apartments in brookside. It shows the uninvited guests. People who live there say theyve been overrun by roaches for years now. They say they cant even cook without bugs bothering them. Theyre too embarrassed to have friends or family come over. I would not go somewhere for them to cook me a feel if i knew they had docockroaches in their house. I dont want the world to know, but its not like i brought that on. I get that. The company that manages the complex says its aware of the problem and is treating the buildings. It says theyre even working with entomologists to find more efficient ways to get rid of the bugs. Management noted tenants can be part of the issue by leaving food out instead of putting it away. Rain will be picking up, but its the wind, surf, and the seas are going to remain rough. Thats avalon, rough yesterday. Hasnt changed. Still going. Jose is still spinning off shore. The winds have picked up. Just a tenmileanhour wind in philadelphia. Close to 20 miles an hour in wildwood. The strongest winds due in this afternoon. We could see wind gusts, this is noontime, look at that, 44mileanhour gusts for Atlantic City, wildwood, and rehoboth beach. Those continue into the afternoon. The high tide doesnt happen at the shore until this evening. 7 30 and 8 30. The high tide might lead to minor flooding. With the winds blowing and seas churning up, the 41 mileperhour winds could see moderate flooding at the shore and delaware beaches this evening. Thats the biggest problem from this one. The rain not all that much. Half an inch possible. By the time this eases out of here, this is by tomorrow morning at 6 00. Close to half an inch in avalon. Not much at all in philadelphia. This is the rain that you can expect during the day. Just a few hundredths of an inch. Scattered showers. The tropical impacts for the jersey shore and delaware beaches will be felt right on through thursday morning with that weakening storm. Still Strong Enough to give us high surf and dangerous rip currents. The high winds, i showed you those for this afternoon. Theyll start to come down overnight tonight. Moderate coastal flooding this evening after a possibility of some minor flooding this morning. And beach erosion is likely with this storm. This is the one storm thats impacting us right now. This is jose. You see the first showers just moving to Atlantic City. These are sprinkles. Theres nothing heavy about that. The steadier, heavier showers are still off shore. And more lied to stay off shore today more likely to stay off shore today as this tracks farther east. You see the bands of showers that are coming in. These will all be spinning toward the coast today. Not going to be a constant rainfall. The wind will be constant. Increasing. The chance of showers on and off during the day. Maria passing through the caribbean, heading toward puerto rico. Just below category5 strength. Expected to strengthen back and hit puerto rico tomorrow morning. Then head out to sea. For us today, 77 degrees this afternoon. Showers are likely. They will be light in philadelphia. Not all that strong at the shore. Sunshine is back for wednesday and thursday. The vine street expressway was closed this morning in between broad and this point around the schuylkill expressway. I was just trying to check in with this camera. Typically what happens is this is one of the last ramps that opens up from the schuylkill to the vine. Thats where were looking now. They didnt zoom in on the spot. Maybe theyve already cleared it. I did see construction vehicles move this way. For the most part, theyre start fog get that out of the way and starting to get that out of the way and clear the vine. If youre watching in your living room, making coffee, youll probably be fine by the time you get there. Watching drive times for the schuylkill expressway. In between the blue route and p. A. Turnpike, there are construction a construction prong underway where we have lanes lost on the eastbound side. The total time to get to the blue route doesnt have an increase there. 13 minutes, westbound from center city to the blue route, 11 minutes now. Even less. And speeds are into the 60s there, as well. So both sides of the schuylkill still okay even with the construction. Also watching an earlier disabled vehicle out in upper marion on valley forge, park road and river road. Thank you. Seeing clouds move in. Spinning off shore, it will stay off shore, this weakening system. Still a minimal hurricane. The latest update has it at 75 miles per hour. So just barely a hurricane. Still a strong storm. And churning up the seas and spreading showers toward our coastline for the delaware beaches and jersey shore. Seeing light shower activity right now. The rain isnt going to be the biggest factor with this storm syst system. We have to worry about the winds that will be stronger later today, leading to flooding, as well as other problems at the shore and delaware beaches. The winds arent that bad, 14 miles per hour.
