A man who lived in the neighborhood tells us he was driving home after get something latenight food and happened to pass this house. He saw fire, stopped and got out. He saw the homeowner, archie, in his late 50s and known to many in this neighborhood, he saw archie running back and forth inside the house with a blanket, a garden hose, doing everything he could to try and put out the fire and his save wife who archie thought was inside. Unbeknownst to archie, his wife had made it out to safety. She was on the first floor overhang. The roof here trying to jump down. He just didnt hear her. Here is how he spent his last few minutes in the words of his son. Ran around the side of the house to get a hose. Came back in to try to find her. But shes outside yelling his name. He didnt know. He did what any husband should do with a wife. He went in there to try to find her. He didnt make it out. Reporter now the woman who jumped from the firstfloor roof, she is in the hospital being treated at christiana hospital for serious injuries. We heard from her stepson that she is expected to be okay. A lot of people waking up in this neighborhood just devastated by the news. Their longtime friend and neighbor, a man named archie who lived on west 37th street, died in a house fire trying to save his wife. Katy zachry, nbc10 news. It will be a slow cleanup process from irma that hit in the states. Supplies are dwindling. Military cargo planes are flying relief missions. More than six Million People are without power in florida. It could be weeks before its fully stroered. At least ten fully restored. At least ten people died in florida and South Carolina. Most of the people died from falling trees. A man in South Carolina died when he was clearing branches from his yard and another limb fell on him. Irma goes in the record books in South Carolina for its storm surge there creating a nearly tenfoot tide. Thats one of the worst tidal surges in 80 years. Meantime, jacksonville is still dealing with the flooding from record tidal singer there. Yeah. Crews tidal surge there. Yeah. Crews rescued 60 people from swamped homes. Floridas governor is cautioning people ton rush home. The people not to rush home. The storm is a tropical depression, but theres a lot of damage to clean up. Downed power lines and debris all over the state. In georgia, high winds brought down trees and other debris. About a Million People in that state are without power. And atlantas airport, the busiest in the world, well, they reported more than 1,000 cancelations there. People have been stranded in florida for days, taking cover and riding out the monster storm. Right here in our area, people are looking forward to going back to florida. People who came up here to escape just to check on the damage that they have down there. Talking about those departures from philadelphia to orlando, theres not much going out today except for one flight at 4 00 this afternoon. The first flights to ft. Lauderdale and West Palm Beach are scheduled for a little after 8 00 a. M. The rest of those are canceled. And a flight to miami at 10 30. Thats pretty much it. Of course, all this could change. So you need to change with your airline. For now at least there will be limited operations in orlando and miami. What that means is you still have a lot of cancelations today. The damage depends on where you look. Orlando international took on some wind and water damage. Airport Officials Say it could take several days to get everything back to normal. Miami international, they endured rain and wind gusts around 100 miles per hour. Airports urging passengers to verify a confirmed seat assignment with your individual airline before you come to the airport. Of course, this has been a pretty big problem since last week. Thousands of flights have been canceled going back to thursday. That means you should expect long lines at the airport if youre heading to those destinations. Theres nothing. The family is waiting to see when theyll be able to catch a flight home. For now, theyre just grateful that they were not hurt in the storm. And a relief effort is underway now in the philadelphia area to help the island of barbuda recover. The entire population of barbuda evacuated yesterday because the island is uninhabitable. People are filling up barrels like this in the chickfila in the cedarbrook neighborhood to help the victims on barbuda. Well, you know, what were looking at is its going to start falling apart more than it has been. Thats going to make it no longer a tropical system. But the remnants of rain are still going to be impacting us locally as we start to see the rain move through. The center of the storm is actually down here. You see weve got an area of rain thats moving to the west. We have the area of rain moving northeast. Thats the area that will first impact us. Then in the days to come, this is going to wrap around and move our way. Weve got a good deal of rain in our fairfax county. Its going to be in our forecast. Its going to be on and off, spotty, light showers. Nothing like florida, georgia, South Carolina saw. Heres the Current Conditions on irma. 35 miles per hour, moving northwest at 15 miles per hour.
